The wife of the Vice President, Mrs. Matilda Amissah-Arthur has donated assorted food items and medical equipment to the Accra Psychiatric hospital as part of efforts to meet the needs of the mental healthcare sector.
The donation is also to enable the hospital properly treat patients.
She paid a surprise visit to the Psychiatric Hospital on Tuesday to make the donation, assuring the medical staff and patients that Government is working to help improve the facilities for better care for patients.
Mrs. Matilda Amissah-Arthur later interacted with health personnel, patients and authorities, saying her visit was to interact, observe and listen to them.
She was briefed by Dr Pinaman Appau , the Chief Psychiatrist of the Hospital, who described the visit as touching and historic.
She said this was the first time a sitting 2nd Lady visited the facility in its 110 years of existence.
An inspection by Mrs Matilda Amissah-Arthur to some selected sections including the children’s wards showed that the facility was not in the best state.
She used the occasion to call for strong partnership between the public and private sector to help address some of the problems confronting the health sector.
According to her, even though government is working hard to address challenges facing the health sector, there is the need for a private sector participation in healthcare delivery.
She appealed to benevolent organisations to continue to show compassion to the poor and vulnerable in society.
Mrs Amissah-Arthur commended the health personnel at the hospital for their dedication to work, especially their commitment to involve and consult other partners despite the inadequate resources available to them.
On her part, the director of the hospital said ageing and crumbling infrastructure due to neglect; pose a huge problem to staff and patients.
The Director of the hospital appealed to government to re-equip the entire facility.
