Record-breaking transfer target Paul Pogba can bring a Patrick Vieira-like presence to Manchester United’s midfield, according to Red Devils goal hero Dwight Yorke.
Having been constantly linked with a return to Old Trafford during the close season, the transfer saga of the summer continues to drag on with Pogba still linked with a huge £100m move back to the club he left for free just four years ago.
The deal would make the 23-year-old the most expensive footballer in the world, above the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi and Gareth Bale, who cost Real Madrid around £85m to prise away from Tottenham in 2013.
Many have baulked at Juventus’ asking price, including Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger who branded to rumoured deal ‘complete madness’.
But former United striker Yorke believes the young midfielder can prove his worth with his commanding influence in midfield, and even likened him to Arsenal’s legendary general Vieira.
Speaking to Alan Brazil and Gunners great Ray Parlour on Monday’s Sports Breakfast, Yorke said: “You ask questions about Pogba – is he better then Gareth Bale, Cristiano Ronaldo or Lionel Messi? No he’s not.
“Is he a Paul Scholes in midfield who is going to dominate games and get you 18, 19 goals a season? No, he’s not that type either.
“He’s more in the mould of Patrick Vieira.
“He’s got that presence in midfield and can get forward when he needs to, so he’s obviously got something to be worth £100m.
“The Premier League has become such a global spectacle and the revenue that is created by teams is enormous now, but that’s the modern day game, I’m afraid. That’s just the way it is.
“I’m sure Pogba will be a great acquisition to the Manchester United squad.”
