The NPP Parliamentary Candidate for the Tema West Constituency, Carlos Ahenkorah , as part of activities to mark his 50th birthday, has donated medical equipment worth about 60,000 dollars to the Tema Polyclinic and the Tema General Hospital.
Presenting the equipment to both facilities, Mr. Carlos Ahenkorah noted that, he lobbied the items from friends in the United States of America.
The items include scanners, scales, chairs, foetus scanning machines, delivery beds, microscopes, sterilizers, maternity examination chairs, and tables among other laboratories equipment.
Mr. Ahenkorah noted that, the donation forms part of week-long activities to mark his 50th birthday celebration.
He said the Tema Polyclinic and the Tema General Hospital are the two major hospitals that take care of the industrial accidents that occur almost on daily basis in the Metropolis.
“I am giving back to society whatever I have gotten from them and as part of my 50th birthday; I have decided to support society through the act of giving. I have set out a week long plan to donate to several aspects of society including schools, hospitals, and drivers among other groups.”
Mr. Ahenkorah noted that, when he becomes the Member of Parliament for his constituency with Nana Addo becoming the President, he will lobby for the upgrading of the Tema Polyclinic to a status of a District Hospital.
With the Tema General Hospital, he said he will champion the course of also upgrading it to the status of a teaching hospital.
“If you look at Tema General Hospital, there are three major roads that this hospital takes care of and it’s unfortunate government is not thinking of taking the pain to upgrade this facility just like that of the Ridge Hospital.”
He said the NPP has a number of good health plans for the people of Tema and when voted into power, thy will roll them out to bring relief to the people.
Receiving the items, the Medical Superintendent for the Tema General Hospital, Dr. Kwabena Opoku Edusei, was grateful for the donation, but called on government to adopt the hospital and give it a facelift due to the important role it plays in the Metropolis.
The Administrator of the Tema Polyclinic, Madam Josephine Boateng on her part, was full of praise to Mr. Carlos Ahinkora for the donation, saying it is the biggest form of donation made to the hospital since it was established some 50 years ago.
“For the facility to be upgraded into a Polyclinic, some facilities needed to be put in place before it can be given a district status, so we plead with philanthropists to come to our aid to enable us take most of the pressure off the Tema General Hospital.”
Mr. Carlos Ahenkorah is expected to donate to schools and some taxi drivers, and also organise a football match among other benevolent activities ahead of a thanksgiving service on Sunday.
