Oscar winner Lupita Nyong’o has addressed the recent controversy over the lack of diversity at this year’s Academy Awards.
The actress posted a message on Instagram voicing her disappointment about the “lack of inclusion.” No people of color were nominated for acting awards this year. Stars like Jada Pinkett Smith and Spike Lee have already spoken out against the Academy, with Pinkett Smith calling for a boycott of the awards ceremony.
In her statement, Nyong’o writes that she stands with her peers who are “calling for change in expanding the stories that are told.”
She captioned the message with a James Baldwin quote — “Not everything that is faced can be changed. But nothing can be changed until it is faced” — and the hashtag #manystoriesmanyvoices.
Nyong’o won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress in 2013 for her role in 12 Years a Slave. She’s currently starring in Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
