A group that calls itself the Pre-Paid Demonstrators Group has threatened to protest if government does not address the recent issue of prepaid credit running faster than normal.
Since the Public Utility Regulatory Commission (PURC) announced the 59.2% increase in electricity tariffs, some users of prepaid electricity meters have been complaining about how their credit runs abnormally.
[contextly_sidebar id=”8cSwKOrqNy1OHzEHz8OkfYMAiMT8m3jj”]The Public Relations Officer for the Pre-Paid Demonstrators Groups, Kwabena Berima, told Citi News that the group has found that instead of 59.2%, electricity tariffs have gone up between 70 and 80 percent.
“We were told that electricity tariffs have increased by 59.2 percent. But we have sat down and realized that the rate at which our credit is running up is more than 59.2 percent. When we do our calculations we get about 70 to 80 percent increment.”
He added that “initially ECG said that they had some technical problems therefore all those who had been affected they would do a refund effective January 1-3. Our findings have told us that some of the people have received their refund, but others have not. We went to ECG again and they told us that for now there is no technical problem and that it is the levies on NHIs and others that have increased.”
Kwabena Berima asked the president to step in and help resolve the issue or the group would hit the streets.
“We are calling on the president to also intervene because he gave 59 and we are paying more than that. If by the end of this month nothing has been done about to rectify the situation, we will hit the streets to register our displeasure,” he said.
