As President Mahama prepares to be re-elected as flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), a group calling itself Ga Adangme Youth of the NDC, is putting pressure on the President to select the Mayor of Accra, Alfred Oko Vanderpuije as his running mate in the 2016 elections.
According to the group, their demand is to help the party address what they refer to as marginalization of the Greater Accra Region in both the presidential and running mate positions over the years.
The concerns were contained in a petition captioned “Make Oko Vanderpuye the running mate for the NDC.”

“Not that we are doubting the competency of Amissah-Arthur but what we are asking the President and all the national executives of the NDC is that they should just consider a Ga because it is our turn,” he said.
Explaining how they settled on Alfred Vanderpuye as the preferred choice, he said “…Because Oko Vanderpuye stands tall among all the Gas who we considered that is why we want Oko Vanderpuye to become the running mate for the NDC come 2016 election.”
Abdul Aziz further added that the Mayor has no hand in their demand to select him as the party’s running mate.
“…Not at all, he’s not aware, we are doing this as the youth wing of the Ga Adangme of the NDC, he’s not aware,” he insisted.
Meanwhile Alfred Oko Vanderpuye has picked up nomination forms to contest in the Ablekuma South constituency in the NDC’s parliamentary primaries on November 7.
Addressing party loyalists, the Mayor was hopeful he will help secure the seat for the party if voted as the parliamentary candidate for the constituency.
