The Deputy General Secretary of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC), Koku Anyidoho has accused the National organizer of the party Kofi Adams of attempting to usurp the authority of the General Secretary, Johnson Asiedu Nketia.
His comments are in relation to a press conference held by Mr. Adams in response to the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP)‘Wɔn gbo’ demonstration on Wednesday at which the NDC National Organiser downplayed the relevance of the protest.
[contextly_sidebar id=”N2WbjxJLEGu1aSmwvcLAkgpm3mRxfixd”]But according to Mr. Anyidoho, Kofi Adams had no business convening a press conference in the party’s name, especially without the knowledge of the Chairman and the General Secretary, as it was not his responsibility.
He stated that having made the choice to run for the position National Organiser of the party at the National Delegates’ Congress in 2014 which he won by a landslide, Kofi Adams should stick to his job and not interfere in the work of the General secretary.
“It is wrong and unacceptable for people to attempt to usurp the powers of other people. It is not acceptable in any organization…structures are in place so let us respect the structures,” Koku Anyidoho told Accra-based radio station Oman FM on Thursday.
“When you begin to abuse the communication tools of press conferences, people won’t take us seriously. Last week press conference, this week press conference, next week press conference. Let us not abuse the communication channels. If you went on a campaign to be an organiser, be an organizer. If you went on a campaign to be a youth organizer, be a youth organizer and allow the General Secretary to run the Secretariat because he went on campaign to become General Secretary,” he added.
Mr. Anyidoho suggested that Kofi Adam’s decision to hold the press conference was an act of indiscipline but added that the General Secretary would ensure that the party’s constitution is adhered to.
“Discipline is key in every political organization, not only political organizations but in every organization that will succeed, discipline is key. We are assuring party supporters that the party’s constitution would work. General [Asiedu Nketiah] will make sure that things are done properly,” he said.
“I just want to hope that nobody would turn into a grasshopper and behave as if he had secured his position and do whatever he wants”
Meanwhile a Political Scientist Political Scientist, Dr.Richard Amoako Baah has suggested that Kofi Adams may have erred in organizing the press conference as “he is not the one who speaks for the party.”
“If you are an elected official of the party and you take over the responsibility of another person, that is not acceptable. Unless you have been coordinating and they say it’s okay for you to do it. If you keep doing that there will be no discipline in the party. It means so many people are speaking for the party and that is the problem,” he opined.
However Dr. Amoako Baah has said the reported tension within the governing party did not come as a surprise to him as there are “different factions within the NDC.”
“Under normal circumstances this would not be a big deal but you have different groups in the party. President Mahama says he takes full responsibility for the energy crisis and somebody goes and says something else. Whose information should we take? When they do that it makes the party look indisciplined, “ he stated
“If the Secretary is there and the Organiser is the one calling for a news conference and saying what he thinks, what is the job of the Secretary and the Deputy Secretary,” he added
