Italian police have confirmed that they have arrested a nurse they suspect may have been involved with the deaths of 38 patients. The reason ‚Äì because she found either them or their relatives annoying. Police have confirmed that they arrested 42-year-old Daniela Poggiali from the town of Lugo of the Emilia-Romagna Region in central Italy at the weekend. They also confirmed that the arrest had come about because she was suspected of having injected potassium into 78-year-old patient Rosa Calderoni who had been admitted for a routine illness but then unexpectedly died. Tests then confirmed unexpectedly high amounts of the chemical in her bloodstream. Potassium can provoke cardiac arrest and is also difficult to trace because it disappears from the body just hours after death. One of the nurses who worked with Poggiali described her as a “cold person but always eager to work”. Another said that the accused nurse had once been reported for giving extra powerful laxatives to patients towards the end of her shift in order to make life difficult for colleagues working in the shift after her. The initial death of the 78-year-old triggered suspicions that led authorities to comb through data from other deaths that occurred when Poggiali was working, resulting in opening investigations into 38 deaths.
