Citi FM’s Nana Boakye-Yiadom has won the award for the best online story at the 19th Ghana Journalist Association (GJA) Awards.
The story, “Phone Farming” which was adjudged the best online story for 2013, revealed how simple text messages are taking rural farmers out of poverty and changing Ghana’s agriculture landscape.
It portrayed how thousands of farmers across the country increased their yields after receiving simple but accurate farming tips through a text messaging platform.
The tips include; when to plough a farm land, planting, application of fertilizer, harvesting, among others.
The platform also empowers the farmers to have bargaining power with the elimination of “middle” men and women who hitherto ripped them off by buying their produce at cheap prices.
