The Ghana National Education Campaign Coalition (GNECC) has described as unfortunate, recent disparaging remarks about government’s decision to distribute free sanitary pads to some deprived female students.
Government secured a loan of 156million dollars from the World Bank to improve secondary school education in the country of which part of the money would be used to secure sanitary pads to be distributed.
Addressing a press conference in Accra, the national chairperson of the Coalition, Bright Kweku Appiah said they are in full support of the sanitary pad distribution.
“All school buildings must have very good sanitary conditions in them, so that you create places for girls and create places for boys so that they will feel comfortable. It is part of the things we’ve called for and we’ve done research in that area and we’ve realized that there are certain institutional facilities that do not have separate toilets for boys and girls. So girls find it difficult to attend to nature’s call and to take good care of themselves,” he said.
He served notice that the group will continue with the campaign until Ghanaians take note and accept the decision by government.
“The campaign is still ongoing and we want to ensure that all these things are in place so that when we introduce a policy of this nature, we will still create the environment where it is comfortable for children,” he said.
