One person, believed to be a “galamsey” miner, has been confirmed dead at Banda-Nkwanta in the Bole District of the Northern Region after a pit, in which he was mining for gold collapsed.
According to reports, the deceased was one of seven miners in the pit before the collapse.
The District Chief Executive of Bole, James Jaaga, confirmed the body had been retrieved by the rescue team and it has been deposited at the morgue for examination.
Mr. Jaaga told Citi News, before the body had been retrieved, the rescue team was approached by a young boy who claimed to be one of the miners in the pit.
According to Mr. Jaaga, the boy, whose name he gave as “Robert,” told the team that “they [the miners] were a seven-member team” in the pit before it collapsed.
The six others, however, reportedly escaped unhurt and were rescued by a team consisting of residents of the area and police.
