Subscribers shun 4 telcos

Four out of the six mobile telecommunication companies in Ghana could not record any additional subscribers in the month of April.

This is according to the latest report by the National Communications Authority (NCA) on voice market share of the Telcos.

Four telcos in all lost an estimated 53,000 subscribers.

The telcos are Tigo, Expresso, Airtel and Glo lost a total of about 53,000 subscribers in April.

Airtel led the list of losers with about 38,000 subscribers and ended that month with 3.5million subscribers.

Tigo followed with a little under 14,000.

Their subscriber base reduced to about 4 million.

Expresso‘s subscription decreased by 497 subscribers.

They ended the month of April with total subscription of a little over 154,000.

Glo lost the least number of subscribers of just about 210 users.

The decline brought Glo’s total subscription to a little over 1.3million.

There were however only two telcos who recorded additional subscribers.

They were market leader MTN and Vodafone.

Vodafone in the month of April recorded the highest number of new subscribers.

They recorded a little over 164,000 new subscribers bringing their total subscription to 6.6 million at the end of April.

vodafone’s Chief Executive officer, Haris Broumidis has been sharing with Citi Business News what has been accounting for the fast growth.

“Firstly, we expanded the network from 300 sites to 2000 sites and we delivered the best quality service because that was a discussion we had before that is on network capability, network investment and quality.

Secondly, we were on the forefront on value preposition. We changed the game on value preposition. We came into the market with innovative value preposition-bundles, ‘RED’ recently. They were quite innovative at the time. Thirdly, we did an amazing job in brand, in terms of how we delivered our brand execution through our platforms, through advertising and through our people living the brand.”

MTN’s subscription also increased by about 72,000 new subscribers.

This brought the market leader’s total market share to 13.1million subscribers as at the end of April.
In all mobile voice subscription in Ghana for April 2014 grew by about 148,000 subscribers.

This shot the total number of mobile voice subscribers from 28.7million in March to 28.8million as at the end of April 2014.
