The chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Dr. Kwabena Agyei says he is unshaken by declarations by some members of the party to contest him for his position.
The National Coordinator of the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), Kofi Portuphy and a former Minister of Trade and Industry, Dan Abodakpi have both declared their intentions to contest the chairmanship position of the NDC.
Dr. Kwabena Adjei is known for leading the NDC to wrestle power from the New Patriotic Party in 2008 and also helped the NDC retain power in 2012.
His spokesperson, Ghande Mustapha said Dr. Adjei “is not perturbed at all and he doesn’t think in any way that this can affect his bid as to whether the NDC as a community would want his leadership again or not.”
He said it is imperative for the national chairman to be maintained to make sure the party retains power in the 2016 general elections to enable the party “fulfill the promises that we gave Ghanaians.”
Mustapha mentioned that Dr. Adjei is currently the second leader of the NDC after the President who “needs the moral support, spiritual support, psychological support and the political support of the party to be able to deliver.”
He clarified that the NDC government is focused on solving the economic difficulties facing the nation rather than “who becomes the chairman or who doesn’t become the next chairman.”
He however failed to reveal if Dr. Adjei will contest the position for the third time saying, “the priority as to whether he will contest or not depends on how we are able to fulfill the promises made to Ghanaians.”
