Residents of Nasia, a farming community in the West Mamprusi District of the Northern region are calling on government and the West Mamprusi District Assembly to extend electricity supply to more households in the community.
The agitated residents say government is reneging on a campaign promise to extend and upgrade electricity supply in community to enhance economic activities and as well as to revamp the irrigation facility of the community.
The Assemblyman for the electoral area, Salifu Alhassan Adam, expressed their disappointment at a press conference at Nasia.
According to him, Nasia is a known community in the region for the cultivation and processing of local rice in commercial quantities but the potential has eluded them due to short supply of electricity to power the irrigation project and rice mills.
He lamented that rice processors have to travel to Walewale the district capital to process their rice when they have rice mills in the community.
He disclosed that the community has 426 households and only 40 percent enjoy electricity from the national grid for over 20 years and said experts attribute the situation to the single face system that they are connected to from Savelugu.
They have therefore made a passionate appeal to government to come to their aid to help revamp all economic activities that served as source of employment for residents.
The spokesperson of the Chief of Nasia, Sherarana Abdul-Rahman Yakubu on his part appealed to the government and other stakeholders to provide them with a three-face system to help stem the kayaye menace as well as improve upon the standard of education.
But in an interview with Citi News, the District Chief Executive for the area, Adam Yussif said the concerns of the residents were being addressed and urged them to remain calm.
He disclosed that contractors were currently on the ground working to connect 25 more communities to the national grid and reiterated governments resolve empower communities for development.
According to him, the community had been provided with streetlights, portable drinking water under the small town water system and a police station under his administration.
