Heavy traffic has been mounting on the Dome-Kwabenya road in Accra due to the collapse of a bridge linking the Atomic round-about to Dome.
The bridge was weakened after the heavy downpour in Accra three weeks ago.
Some residents in the area told Citi News, they have been inconvenienced as a result of the collapse of the bridge.
“It’s causing a lot of problems because we have to bypass and goal round before you can get to your destination. The recent rains caused the whole damage,” a resident said.
Another also explained that the bridge has been in a bad shape for a long time “because you could see that all the concrete had been removed so the water was soaking the clay.”
According to her, city authorities had been coming around to inspect the state of the bridge but no rehabilitation was undertaken to secure the longevity and safety of the structure.
“Just yesterday [Tuesday], a tipper truck passed on it and it immediately collapsed so it has affected a lot of things,” she narrated.
The onset of the rainy season has destroyed a lot of roads in Accra making it difficult for motorists to use them with ease.
The Ministry of Roads and Highways has however disclosed it is undertaking rehabilitation and extension works on all major roads in the capital and across the country.
