Government has expressed outrage at the latest edition of an Africa Watch Magazine which referred to Ghana as the republic of corruption.
The magazine which culled the views of personalities such as Rev Fred Degbe ; Former Member of Parliament, and Nana Akomea; Former Member of Parliament among others stated that “ corruption in the West African Nation of Ghana is old as the country’s modern political history.”
It went on to say that “under John Dramani Mahama’s presidency, corruption is becoming a wide ranging phenomenon.”
It also stated that while corruption has dogged all of Ghana’s post– independence government’s, President Mahama’s administration seemed to have suffered most in the eyes of the public because of what some described as the “laissez-faire attitude” of the President to the canker.
The article further called for revolution to tackle the corruption canker.
In a rebuttal, the Minister of Information and Media Relations, Mr. Mahama Ayariga stated that it is an unfair conclusion for the magazine to indicate that President Mahama has a laissez-faire attitude towards corruption.
On the contrary, he stated that ” if anyone has been strategic about the fight against corruption, it has been President John Dramani Mahama.”
In his opinion, people are able to discuss corruption in its different manifestations because of the processes the President put in place to expose the canker .
According to him, the fight against corruption is a collective one which requires the involvement of all and sundry.
Responding to Mr. Ayariga, the Minority Speaker in Parliament, Osei Kyei Bonsu said it is imperative for Ghanaians to admit to the fact that the “phenomenon of corruption is becoming entrenched, ascending to the ladder.”
In that regard, he charged the President to demonstrate bold and decisive leadership in tackling corruption.
