The Chairman of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), Samia Nkrumah says Ghana’s current economic woes is due to the overthrow of Ghana’s first President, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.
According to the CPP chair, who is also the daughter of Kwame Nkrumah, the overthrow of her father brought an abrupt end to the economic measures put in place to ensure massive development of the country.
Dr. Nkrumah was over thrown by the National Liberation Council (NLC) led by army Generals, Afrifa and Kotoka 40 years ago today.
Speaking to Citi News, Ms Nkrumah suggested that government must bring back some of the measure put in place by the country’s first president in dealing with crisis.
According to her, subsequent governments after her father “haven’t really addressed this problem seriously and the problem is the direction in which we are going.”
The former Jomoro Member of Parliament (MP) asserted that “you can change drivers for at least four years but if you are going in the same direction, we will never reach our destination so we believe that it is the direction that must change.”
She was of the opinion that government will only be successful in tackling the problem if it changes the country’s trade liberalization policy and further counseled the Bank of Ghana (BoG) to be “reoriented to focus on employment creation.”
Ms Nkrumah also cautioned against the over dependent economic practices the country was engaged in.
