The incumbent Chairman of the Ashanti Regional branch of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly called Chairman Wontumi, will go unopposed in the party’s upcoming regional elections.

This is because his main contender, Asare Bediako, has stepped down, sources have told citinewsroom.com

Asare Bediako, before joining the race, was the Asokwa Constituency Chairman of the NPP, who vowed to unseat Wontumi.

It is currently unclear what informed Mr Bediako’s decision to opt out. Mr Bernard Antwi Boasiako is known for his no-nonsense approach which some believe played a pivotal role in the party’s victory in the 2016 elections.

Others are however of the view that he is impatient, and that his approach paints a negative picture of the party.

Some also say he’s a hardworking party member who understands grassroots politics, and also supports the party financially as an influential businessman.

NPP Regional executives’ election slated for April 21 to 24

The party is currently preparing to organize elections at the regional level from 21st to 24th April 2018.

This comes after similar elections took place for the polling station and constituency executives.

Troubles at polling station and constituency executives’ elections

The election of the polling station and constituency executives could not take place in some areas due to some unresolved issues.

John Boadu, the party’s acting General Secretary at a press conference held in March 2018, said they have been able to make strides in resolving such issues, adding that about 14 constituencies were unable to elect their executives.

In the Western Region, the acting General Secretary said the party has been able to resolve issues in the four troubled constituencies which included “Shama, Kwesimintsim and Sekondi, with the exception of Elembelle.”

He added that “the party has ordered for fresh polling station elections in the three constituencies which have started in earnest.”

The suspended General Secretary of the governing New Patriotic Party, Kwabena Agyapong, has sued the Ashanti Regional chairman of the NPP, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi and Kumasi-based Nhyira FM for defamation.

In a suit sighted Citi News, Mr. Agyapong is asking the court to compel Chairman Wontumi to retract claims to the effect that the suspended executive plotted to ensure the NPP’s defeat in the 2016 election.

He is also seeking GHc 400,000 in damages.

Chairman Wontumi did not respond favorably to an earlier letter from Mr. Agyapong’s lawyers demanding an apology for the comments.

Mr. Agyapong had said he wanted the retraction “via the same medium [Nhyira FM] used in making them thus through the frequency modulation of the second defendant and to render an unqualified apology to the plaintiff via the same media.”

Mr. Agyapong also requested an apology letter from Chairman Wontumi “admitting his comments were untrue and unfortunate, and given his tacit commitment never again to spew such falsehood and scandalous defamatory remarks on the person of the plaintiff.”

The NPP suspended its 2nd Vice Chairman, Sammy Crabbe, alongside Mr. Agyapong in 2015, after they were accused of publicly rebelling against the party’s decision to indefinitely suspend its National Chairman, Paul Afoko.

This suit comes at a time some persons and groups have been campaigning for the reinstatement of Mr. Kwabena Agyapong.

It is unclear whether this court action will in anyway affect a possible reinstatement, considering the popularity of Chairman Wontumi within the NPP.

The opposition New Patriotic Party in the Ashanti Region has rejected claims that its Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, also known as Chairman Wontumi masterminded the planting of the fake ballot papers that were intercepted by the Police in the Ashanti Regional capital, Kumasi on Monday.

“The NPP has absolutely nothing to do with the criminal act to thumb print ballot papers in favour of John Dramani Mahama, the NDC presidential candidate. It’s an allegation that is mischievous, reckless, criminal and designed to pervert the course of justice,” the NPP’s parliamentary candidate for the Subin Constituency, Eugene Boakye Antwi said at a press conference on Tuesday.

[contextly_sidebar id=”DD1nh4vL5V6hJdFnOjr5DaZ8MVSeTEdt”]The Police in Kumasi on Monday intercepted three bags stuffed with thumb-printed presidential ballot papers found at the Madison Lodge at TUC in Kumasi.

All the retrieved ballot papers which had thumb prints for President John Mahama, the presidential candidate of the NDC was later said to be fake.

The NDC has however blamed Wontumi and his aide, Andy Owusu for plotting the incident.

Meanwhile, the NPP in the region while rejecting the claim, further accused the Police of taking sides instead of being objective.

Eugene Boakye Antwi at the press conference said “the leadership of the party in the region has read with dismay and concern about the threat of arrest and detention of our Regional Chairman on social media by the Commissioner of Police, Nathan Kofi Boakye, the Regional Police commander.”

“The constitution of Ghana enjoins the security agencies to protect every responsible and law abiding citizens who go about their lawful businesses. We urge the security agencies to exercise maximum restraint, reasonable force and even handedness in their constitutional mandate, before, during and after this tensed political season. The leadership has put in place maximum internal security arrangements to protect every polling station to ensure that Ghanaians specifically those residing in the Ashanti Region are free to go about and exercise their civic responsibilities,” he added.
