A member of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Victor Smith, has advised founder of the party, Jerry John Rawlings, to leave the party if he so desires and stop attacking its members.

“If your love for the party has declined just leave the party,” he dared.

Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen on Monday, Mr. Smith accused Mr. Rawlings of backing his wife who left the NDC, to form the National Democratic Party (NDP).

Victor Smith, who was once was Mr. Rawlings’ spokesperson but fell out with him, gave the advice following what he calls incessant attacks and criticisms of the NDC by the party founder.

Victor Smith, NDC stalwart

Former President Rawlings at the least opportunity takes on members of his party accusing them of failing to uphold probity and accountability which are the tenets on which the party was built.

He said the NDC party while in government sidelined members who had integrity in the likes of Martin Amidu, and went in for others who had influence but had no integrity thus lead to the party’s defeat.

He also wasn’t fully present in the party’s campaigns in the last two elections in 2012 and 2016.

Stop Rawlings now or forget 2020

Mr. Smith has called on leadership of the NDC to call Rawlings to order, or pay for it dearly in the 2020 general elections.

According to him if they fail to stop Rawlings from further attacks, it could have dire repercussions on the NDC’s chances in the upcoming elections.

“If the party leadership does not do anything about it, then we will have a very tall order…if they do not do anything about it to have the problem resolved now, it will be very difficult for us to win [the 2020 election].”

“When I say we should deal with him, I mean they [NDC leadership] have to stop him [Rawlings] from doing what he is doing….his remarks have been creating problems within our party. If the party leadership does not rectify it now for the progress of the party, then there is a possibility that we may not win 2020 election,” he noted, urging the NDC leadership to be “bold” and take a decision against the party founder.

Rawlings, in the last few years, has been criticizing some members of the NDC at the least opportunity.

“When I say we should deal with him, I mean they [NDC leadership] have to stop him [Rawlings] from doing what he is doing….his remarks have been creating problems within our party. Mr. Smith made the call on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen on Monday.

Victor Smith also believes that Rawlings’ love for the NDC has become cold following his attacks, and thus called on him to exit the party if he so desires and join that of his wife, Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings’ National Democratic Party [NDP].

“If your love for the party has declined just leave the party,” he added.

Rawlings takes on NDC

Former President Rawlings has in recent times taken on his party members accusing them of failing to uphold probity and accountability which are the tenets on which the party was built.

He said the party while in government sidelined members who had integrity in the likes of Martin Amidu, and went in for others who had influence but without integrity.

He also wasn’t fully present in the party’s campaigns in the last two elections in 2012 and 2016.

Rawlings recently took on former Foreign Affairs Minister, Hanna Tetteh, whom he accused of intentionally squeezing her wife’s hand during a handshake.

The Deputy General Secretary of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Koku Anyidoho, has described as premature, calls for all current national executives of the party to be voted out.

The latest to call for the complete overhaul of the national executives came from Ghana’s Former High Commissioner to the UK, Victor Smith.

[contextly_sidebar id=”SZd235SwqTjnwykw61RUozkr4vQYPZCC”]Mr. Victor Smith contended that, the abysmal failure of the NDC should be put squarely at the feet of the current executives, saying“we should change the whole guard. We should start with some die-hard selfless people… I think he [Asiedu Nketia] has been there long enough. We should just clean the stables.”

This is in spite of the fact that he sees nothing wrong with maintaining former President John Mahama, who led the NDC to its monumental defeat from a position of incumbency.

But speaking to Citi News, Koku Anyidoho said party members must hold their horses until the Kwesi Botchway Committee releases its report on the NDCs defeat in the 2016 elections.

“We have said continuously that we are waiting for the Kwesi Botchway report. For me as a National Executive Committee member, it will be unfortunate on my part to engage in some discourse that will tend to look at the NDC internal issues beyond the remit of the Kwesi Botchway report and other matters.”

Ghana’s former High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, Victor Smith, has said former President John Mahama remains the best candidate for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for the polls in 2020.

He believes the NDC should field no other candidate than the former President, if it is really interested in capturing power from the NPP in 2020.

“If NDC wants to win 2020, there is no better candidate than John Mahama. If we want to just try 2020, then we can afford to put forth a new candidate so if he doesn’t win, he can be advertised for the future. But if we want 2020 , what we need to do is to present him [John Mahama].”

[contextly_sidebar id=”FZHIPX2RWC3oY1ngem99lnBsyntZc75r”]Mr. Smith stated that, although fielding Mr. Mahama will increase the NDC’s chances of winning the 2020 elections, it is equally essential for the party to “correct” the internal bickering to ensure that every requirement needed for victory is met.

“Mahama did so well in delivering the deliverables in terms of development of our country. However in terms of our own party, there was the bickering, there was the anger in our party which cost us. If we want to win elections we should put John, but correct the mistakes. If we [the NDC] want to be the ones in the driving seat in 2020, our best bet is the one we put out there already. He [Mahama] did so well but there were some hiccups and that probably led to us losing the elections.”

Victor Smith is not the only one who has openly declared his support for Mr. Mahama, although the former President has not stated his intention to re-run.

The NDC Member of Parliament for North Tongu , Samuel Okudzeto, and the National Organiser for the NDC, Kofi Adams among others, believe that Mr. Mahama is their best bet for 2020.

While calls for the former President have intensified, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Constituency executives of the Nadowli/Kaleo Constituency in the Upper West Region, are backing calls for their Member of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, to join the race to become the next flagbearer for the 2020 polls.

This calls came as posters with Mr. Bagbin, the Second Deputy Speaker of Parliament, announcing his readiness to contest for the flagbearer slot of the NDC made rounds on social media.
