The University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS), has rusticated five students for examination malpractices in the second semester of the 2016/2017 academic year.

Two other students are to be expelled from the University for examination related misconduct, Professor John Gyapong, the Vice Chancellor of the University disclosed at the matriculation of newly admitted students for the 2017/2018 academic year.

[contextly_sidebar id=”dLaYZlvkgApdsClmlW14k4oOkA3oMCZR”]He said UHAS “takes examinations very seriously and abhors examination malpractices” and urged the fresh students to read and abide by all regulations governing the conduct of students especially on the conduct of examinations in the students’ handbook.

Prof. Gyapong called on the students to play responsible roles, reminding them that they were admitted as individuals, and would therefore be responsible individually for all actions throughout their stay in the University.

He said in the last five years, the University has made significant progress, and asked the students to take advantage of facilities and opportunities available to excel.

Prof Gyapong said the University was gratified that a major challenge faced by students in the past was gradually being resolved with the inception of Metro Mass Transit Services to provide transportation for students and staff.

He said the University Management had assembled competent and experienced professors, lecturers, administrators and other professionals to ensure that students were productive during their stay in UHAS.

The Vice Chancellor urged the students to build long lasting relationships with their colleagues and be disciplined by imbibing the values and ethos of the University.

A total of 1,401 students were admitted, but 824 enrolled out of 5,340 applications for undergraduate programmes.

The University also received 112 applications for postgraduate programmes in the School of Public Health, admitted 27 and enrolled 25.

The Vice Chancellor of the University of Health and Allied Sciences, Professor John Owusu Gyapong is unhappy with the construction firm, Ussuya Ghana over the unnecessary delay in the completion of the road projects in the University.

The University has deplorable road networks that undermine its spectacular view.

It has lecture halls, auditorium, multi-purpose science laboratory, administration block, library, cafeteria, ICT centre and residential facility for both staff and students.

But work on the 17km road project which comprises of landscaping, construction of internal roads, boundary roads and parts of the access roads of the University is behind schedule.

Citi News interview with University’s Director of Works and Physical Development, Dr William Vidogah, revealed that the project which was awarded to the contractor in January 2013 and to be completed within a year has been delayed for almost four years.

What however baffles the University management is the Contractor’s attitude towards the project even after receiving an amount of GH¢9,255, 245.76 representing 22 per cent of the contract fee.

Speaking to members of the Public Interest and Accountability Committee (PIAC) during their visit to the campus as part their activities of monitoring and tracking Oil and Gas Revenue Projects in the Country, the Vice Chancellor said several attempts to get the contractors expedite actions towards the early completion of the work has failed.

It could be recalled that then President, John Dramani Mahama expressed similar reservations over the works of the contractor and warned that he could lose the contract.

The situation according Professor John Owusu-Gyapong is rendering the University inaccessible with some the routes developing gulleys due to erosions.

University is struggling to provide adequate accommodation for both lecturers and students.

The University which currently has a student population of about 3000 and over 200 senior worked does not have commensurate housing for them.

The only hostel on the main campus can only accommodate a maximum of 30 students with an 8 unit semi-detached two bedroom staff bungalow.

This puts extra financial burden on students and lecturers who would have to rent apartments in Ho and commute several kilometres from the regional capital to the main campus in Sokode.

The Vice Chancellor, therefore, called on government to pay special attention to the development of the University to befit its status as the first publicly-funded state university in the Volta region.

Supported by GIZ and other development partners, the PIAC team including journalists, lawyers and other key stakeholders are on a week tour of the Volta Region inspecting projects funded by Ghana’s Oil and Gas revenue.

An acute water shortage has hit the Trafalgar Campus of the University of Health and Allied Sciences, following the University’s failure to pay their water bills to the Ghana Water Company Limited.

Citi News’ investigations revealed that the Ghana Water Company cut supply to the school a fortnight ago over its indebtedness.

Students on campus now struggle daily to get access to safe drinking water.

Some of them who spoke to Citi News on condition of anonymity lamented that, they sometimes have to go to the Volta Regional Hospital in search of water.

They also accused the University of charging exorbitant fees without delivering quality services, and complained about suffering from some diseases as a result of using contaminated water.

Citi News’ visit to the Clinical Hostel and the lecture halls at the Trafalgar campus, was met with a pungent stench revealing the messy state of sanitary conditions in the school.

The Deputy Public Relations Officer of the School, Ofoe Gator, blamed the situation on a technical challenge from the Ghana Water Company which is affecting households in that locality.

However, the Ho District Commercial Officer of the company, Mr. Semevor Wisdom, denied the claims insisting the school owes a huge amount of money hence the disconnection.

According to Mr. Semevor, “they are owing, that is why we disconnected them… they came protesting that some of them are not owing but we disconnected them so we went to reconnect them yesterday.”

Former President Jerry John Rawlings is sponsoring boxers, Braimah ‘Bukom Banku’ Kamoko and Ayittey Powers, to the Brazil 2014 World Cup to support the Black Stars, it has been reported.

President Rawlings decided to sponsor the two boxers to Brazil for the World Cup as a reward for bringing back some excitement in boxing with their ‘Judgement Night’ bout a few weeks ago, Ghanasoccernet.com reported Thursday.

The ex-President was at ring side at the Accra Sports Stadium when  Banku pummelled to win the bout by a unanimous points decision.
Banku reportedly confirmed the news in an interview with Accra-based Happy FM.

“JJ [the former President] bought our tickets for us to Brazil.

“I will be at the Black Stars camp to give them morale [sic] and support. We pray and hope that they will bring back the cup,” he was quoted as saying.

The Black Stars have been drawn in Group G, alongside Germany, Portugal and the USA. They kick off their campaign against the USA on June 16.

Boxer, Ayitey Powers is demanding a rematch with Braimah Bukom Banku Kamoko  after loss to his long time rival.

Speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show, Powers said the weight difference was the swing factor for Banku Kamoko.

“The weight difference was too much and that was the problem for me.I could have decided not to fight after he came in 8kilos overweight but I felt I needed to respect the fans who had bought tickets so i fought,” he said.

According to Powers If this fight had been in Europe it would not have been allowed to happen. ”I have told his camp already that I want a rematch,” he reiterted.

Prior to the bout, Banku weighed 205 pounds, exceeding the upper limit of 200 for the cruiserweight division, while Powers, weighed exactly 200 pounds.

It is unclear whether Banku will accept the challenge of a rematch after signing a deal to face a Russian opponent on May 30.

Ayittey  Powers also cautioned  Ghanaians not  to link  his defeat to directions he received  from his Godfather, Prophet T.B  Joshua not to fight.

”He is my prophet; why are people saying that. You should leave him [T.B Joshua] out,” he said.

It is happening live on May 15.

Braimah ‘Bukom Banku’ Kamoko and Michael ‘Ayitey Powers’ Okine will set aside all the shenanigans and fight on Thursday.

At the Accra Sports Stadium on Friday afternoon, the two promised a good show in the presence of  GBA President Peter Zwennes and the freshly-crowned Joshua Clottey.

Citi 97.3 FM is the official English broadcaster of the fight

They both backed down from their insistence earlier this week that they would not fight unless their respective purses were upped to Gh¢50,000 (fifty thousand cedis) each.

“We have already signed the contract and we won’t do anything to bring boxing in Ghana into disrepute so we shall fight. If it’s even for one cedi, I will fight,” Kamoko swore.

“Yes it’s true that we wanted more cash but a contract is a contract and I have already told everyone that I will donate my purse to charity. I have spoken to the promoter already and I will accept what the promoter is offering, its victory that I want,” Ayitey Powers also vowed.

Boxers usually add spice to the pre-game talk by predicting the round in which the fight will be over, but Banku reneged this time.

“I will not reveal the round but I can assure all my fans to come and celebrate because no matter what I will stop Ayitey Powers.”

As for Powers, he reiterated his earlier promise: “This fight won’t travel far, I’m going to stop Bukom Banku in round 6, so I’m telling my fans all over to come in their numbers.”

Repeated explanation

Peter Zwennes went over the state of the issues regarding the fight vis-a-vis the statements by the Ga Traditional Authority earlier this week who said it will not happen.

“May 15 was chosen because the following day, the Ga Traditional Council’s ban on drumming and noise making comes into force,” he started.

“We didn’t want to keep our sponsors and public waiting too long for this fight so we are urging the fans especially from Bukom and James Town to beware and not make much noise before and after the fight,” Mr. Zwennes said.

“We would ensure maximum security in and around the stadium to forestall any disturbance and let peace reign.”

Joshua Clottey has finally got the title he won in Australia a month after he beat Anthony Mundine.

The ‘Grand Master’ returned to Ghana after his April 9 victory from his latest conquest, but without the prize he worked for.

On Friday morning, the new World Boxing Association (WBA) International light-middleweight title confirmed on Facebook that the boxing body had finally sent him the belt.

In front of his home fans, Anthony Mundine was brutally floored five times by the man from Accra.

For a sport that has the tradition of presenting titles to winners in the ring just after their triumph, the absence of the WBA International belt on the night when Clottey won was strange.

“I raised questions but it seemed to me that they did not expect me to win the title,” Clottey explained to the Daily Graphic when he touched down days after the win.

“I called my manager in the United States over the matter and he spoke to them about it. It was to be delivered within days, but now almost two weeks after the fight, I’m yet to receive the belt,” he said at the time.

Citi Sports understands that Clottey automatically becomes the number one contender to Mayweather Jr’s light-middleweight crown, having won the WBA International title.

Clottey, 36, has a good career record of 38 wins, including 22 knockouts and four losses.

UPDATE at 7:15pm

Bukom-Banku-and-Ayitey-Powers

Citi Sports can confirm that May 2 is the new date for the highly-anticipated bout between Braimah “Bukom Banku” Kamoko  and Ayittey Powers.

Earlier on Thursday, Powers announced he was pulling out of the bout which had been slated for 18th April at the Accra Sports Stadium.

But sources close to the organisers, Box Office Promotions, say after lengthy discussions throughout Thursday, an agreement on a May 2 date was struck between the fighters, organizers and SuperSport, the broadcasters.

Citi Sports can also confirm that SuperSport is willing to telecast the bout on the new date and it is expected to release a press statement sometime next week to announce the new date and broadcast plans for the bout.

The Ghana Boxing Authority had stated that Powers was yet to formally inform them of his decision and in their books, the April 18 bout would go ahead as planned.

What remains under discussion is the issue of tickets which have already been purchased by boxing fans. It is believed an announcement on that will be made in due course.

Lots of boxing fans had expressed disappointment at Powers’ decision to opt out of the bout but it seems the showdown dubbed “The Judgement Night” would still take place between the rivals who had had exchanged very strong words in the build up to the eventual signing of the contract in March 2014.

Earlier, Alex Ntiamoah Boakye, who represents the promotions syndicate and expressed surprise when Citi Sports spoke to him.

“I only got calls from friends about what Powers said but trust me that we are not going to take it lightly. This is a fight that is going to be big for Ghana boxing,” he said.

“People think the windfall will be for my company. No. This is for the whole Ghanaian boxing industry.”

“We have spent a lot of money and resources into this fight. We have brought rings from outside the country. The amounts that have gone into commercials run into the millions.”

“Contracts have been signed. We are just waiting to hear from Powers officially.”

Powers said after visiting controversial Nigerian preacher T.B Joshua at the weekend, spiritual direction has led him to call of the fight to a later date.

Disappointed patrons

Big fights such as these usually demand stringent clauses to be signed, and Alex Ntiamoah indicated that this was the case for this bout as well.

“We have clauses in the contract, yes. But if he wants to leave the fight, we will take it up with the Ghana Boxing Authority. They usually decide these things.”

“I know people will be disappointed if the fight doesn’t happen, in which case we simply have to give monies back to those who have paid for the tickets.”

Citi Sports spoke to many people on the streets who were simply gutted at the news of Powers withdrawal. It is clear that the expectations behind this fight would have lifted the country’s boxing to a slightly higher level of appreciation.

Social Media explosion

Soon after Powers (won 18, lost 23) made his declaration, a hashtags related to him were trending on Twitter: #PowersMustFight

Social media reactions began with disbelief, then shock and then anger and typical Ghanaian sarcasm.

The two boxers have managed to hype their April 18 bout so much that tickets have become scarce.
