Flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Akuffo-Addo has charged Ghanaians to stand against tribal politics in the country.

According to him such move could derail the peace in the country.

Akufo-Addom’s comment comes on the back of a wave of bashing President John Mahama received for making some remarks deemed ethnocentric against the running mate of the NPP, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

He said the NPP would not allow Dr. Bawumia to become its flagbearer  because to him the NPP has always taken northerners for granted.

But addressing party faithful at a rally in Techiman in the Brong-Ahafo region on Friday, Akufo-Addo called on electorates to ignore such comments and work towards achieving victory for the NPP on December 7, 2016.

“It doesn’t matter where you come from – whether you are an Asante, Dagomba, northerner or whatever, we are all Ghanaians so let no one try to bring disunity amongst us by engaging in tribal politics. If the northerners come down here to engage in cocoa business, it helps all of us.”

“This is the kind of unity we want for this election. Let us stand for one united indivisible Ghana. That is the Ghana we are fighting for. That is the Ghana that will bring us progress and prosperity,” he added.

The Presidential Candidate of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Akufo-Addo, has said he want Ghanaians to reject incumbent President John Mahama on December 7th not because he hails from the north, but because he is a “poor leader.”

“My quarrel with President Mahama is not because he is a northerner. I don’t care where anybody comes from. My quarrel with him is that he is a poor leader of a country that has great opportunity and potential. We have a poor leader in John Dramani Mahama, and that is why I am agitating for change,” he said.

[contextly_sidebar id=”TiQUQqfr7DsBujweLaSJYH1nwzmFPgoK”]Nana Addo made the comment while speaking at the NPP’s Upper East Regional rally in Bolgatanga on Monday.

The NPP Flagbearer made the comment in response to claims by President Mahama that the NPP won’t allow Akufo-Addo’s running mate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia the opportunity to be president because he hails from Northern Ghana.

“Instead of being a figure to bring all of us together, he wants to set North against South, he wants to set tribe against tribe. That should not be the task of a Ghanaian leader. A Ghanaian leader should try and bring all the people of Ghana together as one, whether they are Mamprusis, Dagombas, Gonjas, Frafras, Kusasis, Grushis, Walas, Dagartis, Ashantis, Akuapems, Akyems, Kwahus, Fantes, Ahantas, Nzemas, Ewes or Gas. We are all one people, and our leaders should ensure that the coherence amongst us is maintained,” he added.

The NPP flagbearer, thus urged all Ghanaians, to “turn our backs on tribal language, and turn our backs on the politics of reaction and the politics of yesterday. Let us look forward, look forward to that bright future, which is our lot as Ghanaians, and fulfill our destiny as the Black Star of Africa.”

The presidential candidate of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) for the December 7 polls, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has condemned what he calls dirty politics of tribalism and ethnicity consistently waged by President John Mahama in his campaign in the North of the country.

Nana Akufo-Addo entreated President Mahama to eschew ethnic politics and tell Ghanaians what the NDC administration has been able to do for the people of the North in the last eight years in office.

Barely 16 days to this year’s crucial general election, President Mahama is reported to be engaging in ethnic politics in the northern part of the country to get votes.

“I pity Northerners who are calling for change,” President Mahama, a northerner, told residents of Lawra in the Upper West Region when toured the area as part of his campaign for a renewed mandate.

He reportedly called on Northerners not to vote for Nana Akufo-Addo and the NPP, because they hate people from the north, adding “they will use you and dump you.”

But addressing a rally at Akim Oda in the Eastern Region as part of his campaign tour, the NPP presidential candidate described President Mahama’s statements as unfortunate.

Nana Akufo-Addo said these are ethnocentric comments by a President who has no plans of presiding over a unified country, and he is willing to say and do anything to win an election.

“With the signs clearly spelt on the wall that he (President Mahama) has lost the Presidency, he has begun using divisive language in his campaign. He is in the North telling the people that because he is from the North, the people should vote for him. This is sad.

“It is sad and shocking that our President will prefer not to use language that brings people together, but is rather using language that will divide us. I will not come before you and tell you to vote for me because I am from the Eastern Region or from Okyeman. I will never do that. The policies I have outlined over the course of my campaign should be the basis of your voting for me,” Nana Akufo-Addo stated.

According to him, President Mahama is embarking on a divisive and tribal-based campaign because of his inability to defend his 8-year record in office and has no campaign message to the people of the North.

Nana Akufo-Addo pointed out that, the Mahama administration has disappointed the people of the North, as evidenced in the scandals that have rocked the Savannah Acceleration Development Authority (SADA).

“You (President Mahama) say you are from the North, and you are asking people to vote for you on that basis. However, it is under your tenure of office that the people of the North have been further impoverished. The levels of poverty in the North are truly unprecedented. Monies from SADA have been squandered, monies which were to be used to develop the North have vanished,” he said.
