The President of the National House Chiefs and Paramount Chief of Asogli Traditional Area, Togbui Afede XIV, says US President, Donald Trump’s description of African nations as ‘shithole countries’ is a manifestation of the level of corruption and under-development seen in African countries.

He said corruption has for several years denied citizens of Africa of their dignity and growth.

[contextly_sidebar id=”cIcb8R8kqbSkvQuCWhLIT2Db9kSs3R0p”]The traditional ruler and entrepreneur who bemoaned the socio-economic conditions of most African countries, attributed the situation to the unfair means by which most African leaders manage resources.

“I am always worried that the poverty has been with most of us in the country and a lot of all Africans and the black race. That is what allowed President Trump to refer to us as shithole countries. We as leaders have the responsibility to work hard to take our people out of poverty so we can earn the respect of other nations; so we can restore dignity to the black man. Extremely important! When you study the likes of Haiti; it was mentioned by President Trump and of course across Africa, the missing ingredient has always been lack of fairness, corruption and etc” he lamented.

Trump was reported to have made the unsavoury comments about Africa and some countries including Haiti while complaining about immigrants coming to the US.

The alleged comment has been met with a lot of anger and dissatisfaction from most Africans and their leaders.

Togbe Afede was speaking at the Regional House of Chiefs during a meeting between Chiefs in the region and the Committee looking into the creation of a new region out of the Volta Region.

The Chief commended the President for appointing Martin Amidu as the Special Prosecutor, adding that the government must commit fully to fighting corruption and ensuring fairness in all governance processes.

“… I applaud the President again for the bold decision in appointing Martin Amidu as the Special Prosecutor. It is in the same spirit that we have to conduct this exercise of deciding whether Volta Region is better as one for the people or better as two or three. And therefore I urge fairness. Fairness has been the missing ingredient in most of the black world. Whenever people decide to cheat, of course, there is disharmony” he added

President Nana Akufo-Addo, in fulfilling the demand for the creation of four new regions constituted a nine-member Commission of Inquiry to look into the proposals for the regions.

The meeting, which was led by the Committee Chairman, Justice S. A. Brobbey, was to, among other things, seek the views of the traditional leaders on the demand for the creation of a new region out of the Volta Region.

They are expected to embark on a public hearing in some selected areas in the region to receive inputs from the people.

Chiefs have been urged to take centre stage in the anti-corruption fight to save the nation’s resources from being diverted into private pockets.

Togbe Afede XIV, President of the National House of Chiefs (NHC), said it should not be lost on anybody that corruption “discourages innovation and discourages hard work”, adding that everyone is needed to get actively involved in the fight to make it a disincentive.

Addressing the second general meeting of the chiefs this year in Kumasi, Togbe Afede asked that the chiefs lead by example in helping to change the attitudes of citizens.

“Let us remember, this is our time to make the difference, and we cannot do this unless we speak against wrong doing,” he said.

He drew attention to the correlation between discipline and development, and said the most disciplined societies were the most developed.

Togbe Afede reminded his colleague chiefs to do more to bring development to their people.

He also applauded the government for its bold development vision to have a country beyond aid. He said government projects such as the one district one factory, free senior high school policy and the Ghana Card, were good initiatives that can promote development in the country.

Togbe Afede rallied the chiefs to eschew selfishness and work together to modernize and transform the chieftaincy institution.

The goal should be an institution that “is relevant to the needs of our people, an institution whose work meets the expectations and aspirations of our people”, he added.

Professor Kenneth Agyemang Attafuah, Director of National Identification Authority (NIA), announced that 2,500 mobile registration officers were going to be deployed for registration of citizens for the Ghana Card.

The registration, he said, would be done region by region – starting from the Greater Accra and ending in the Upper West Region.

More than 5,000 people would also be assigned to visit every community to help everybody to understand the importance of acquiring the national identification card.

Togbe Afede XIV, Paramount Chief of Asogli Traditional Area, disclosed that the people of the Volta Region, are leveraging on government’s industrialization policies.

According to the Paramount Chief, measures are being taken at the local level by stakeholders in the Volta Region in tandem with the National Policy of establishing industries in each district.

He said the region has already taken the lead with a fertilizer production company at Juapong, which aims at providing jobs for the people and stimulating local economy.

[contextly_sidebar id=”FJnYhrae5ZQKgtCOmV5SImiOeR8k29Ns”]Togbe Afede also mentioned the expansion of the Ho Airport project, and said the region is in consultation with the Ministry of Aviation to establish an Aviation School in Ho, as well as an Aircraft Repair and Maintenance Organization which sought to make the project commercially viable.

“We are taking maximum advantage of the government’s programmes. We have just registered a fertilizer project at Juapong under the one district –one factory initiative. We are also working hard with government to ensure that the Ho airport becomes commercially viable. Among others, we are thinking of working with government to locate a flight training school in Ho and possibly an Airport Repair and Maintenance Organization” he stated

As part of government’s policy dubbed “One District- One Factory”, each local authority in the country is to benefit from a production company that would provide ready market or commercialize staple crops produced in the area.

Speaking at this year’s Asogli Festival Celebrations, the Paramount Chief called on the people of the region to fully harness the opportunities that such government interventions present to enhance their lives.

Togbe Afede XIV, Agbogbomefia of Asogli State, and President of the National House of Chiefs, has lauded government for implementing its flagship Free Senior High School Policy.

He said “education is the most effective weapon against poverty” and that the policy formed the basis for the country’s development agenda.

Togbe Afede was addressing a durbar in Ho to climax the 2017 Asogli Yam Festival, which was held under the theme: “the role of tradition and culture in governance and development”.

The President of the National House of Chiefs also commended government for other initiatives such as the industrialization policy and the fight against corruption and environmental degradation.

Togbe Afede, however lamented the dwindling role of chiefs in national development, and said measures were being put in place to ensure they “won back their nobility”.

He called on chiefs to support Government’s policies and take advantage of them to develop their areas.

Togbe Afede said poverty was not God’s design for mankind, and urged Government to liberate the private sector to transform the economy and create wealth for the citizenry.

“We must do things differently. The same way will not help us. Biblical miracles are history now. God does not reward laziness and mediocrity, he rewards hardwork,” he said.

Dr. Alhaji Mahamudu Bawumia, the Vice President, asked Asogli youth to take lessons from the Festival and rekindle communal spirit and patriotism.

“Elders are the teachers of civic responsibility and must instill proper discipline and pride in the youth…that is how we shape the norms of society…this is how we make ourselves better,” he said.

Dr. Bawumia said the Free SHS was just the start of many good things adding that the policy would benefit all.

He said teacher trainee allowance would be restored this month, and that of nurses next month, and reiterated Government’s commitment to the construction of the Eastern Corridor road and the construction of a bridge on River Oti.

Dr. Bawumia announced that Government would soon launch a digital address system to enhance commerce and governance.

The festival attracted members of the diplomatic corps and local and foreign tourists.

The Agbogbomefia of the Asogli state of the Volta Region, Togbe Afede XIV, has sued the Ghana Army over the construction of a military building near his private residence.

He said the construction of the 6-storey building has resulted in the destruction of his security lights and forced the abandonment of his private car park due to fallen debris from the structure.

togbe-afede-house-1

The suit sighted by citifmonline.com was filed at the Human rights division of the Accra High Court on Tuesday, 28th February 2017.

It has the Chief of Defence Staff, the Minister for Defence, the Attorney General, and Yao Addo Developments Limited as defendants.

According to the suit, the structure, which looks like a commercial property with towers and wings overlooking Togbe Afede’s private property in Accra, started around September 2016.

togbe-afede-house-3

The suit said Togbe Afede, who is also the President of the National House of Chiefs, feared that if the structure is allowed to be completed in its current form without any modification, his rights to privacy of his home will be compromised.

“… I am again advised by Counsel and I verily believe same to be true that privacy is a foundation bedrock of right on which other human rights are built, and that if the Respondents are not restrained, the Applicant’s [Togbe Afede’s] rights would be greatly violated.”

togbe-afede-house-4

“.. I am further advised by Counsel and I verily believe same to be true that the wing that overlooks Applicant’s home also violates Article 12 of the United Nations Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) 1948, which provides that “no one shall be subjected to arbitrary interference with his privacy, family, home or correspondence nor to attacks upon his honour and reputation. Everyone has the right to the protection of the law against such interference or attacks.”

togbe-afede-house-2

He said the “unlawful and arbitrary interference” with his privacy has caused him considerable damage which includes the loss of human dignity and sense of security, a threat to his life, emotional and psychological trauma, destruction of security lights and abandonment of his private car park due to fallen debris from the structure.

He is praying the court to declare the structure as a violation of his right to privacy, and also the removal of its wing overlooking his home or alternatively, a screen on part of the structure to guarantee his privacy.

He is also praying the court for an injunction to halt any further construction on the wings of the structure.

The Paramount Chief of Asogli Traditional Togbe Afede XIV said his election as the new President of the National House of Chiefs and the election of Nana Akufo-Addo as the incoming President of Ghana, is an orchestration by God for them to work together to improve the lives of Ghanaians.

At a durbar organized by chiefs in the Volta Region to celebrate the new President of the National House of chiefs, Togbe Afede XIV observed that Ghana has no excuse to continue reeling under poverty despite its enormous resources.

He added leaders must be seen working selflessly and enforcing probity and accountability towards the growth of the nation.

Nana Addo

Reflecting on him and Nana Addo taking up crucial positions within the same period, Togbe Afede said it was an act of nature to position them to enhance the lives of their people.

“Your Excellency, the elections are over, I won and you won. Our chiefs desired change that will bring them into the development process, and they have chosen me to lead that change. The people of Ghana desired change that will bring prosperity, and they fell on you. Providence has brought us together and we share an important privilege and obligation. We have no choice but to collaborate to bring prosperity to our people. The good news is that you are a royal yourself, and you understand and appreciate chieftaincy” he stated

He also advised the President to bring innovations to his new role.

“Your Excellency, it would require that we do things differently. More of the same approach will not produce different results. That is why the people believe in your change agenda. As part of that change, we need your support to build a strong, development-oriented chieftaincy institution that is able to facilitate governance and development at all levels” he advised

On his part, the President-elect Nana Addo congratulated Togbe Afede on his election into office as the President of the National House of Chiefs and revealed his resolve to closely work with him.

“I intend to work with you at all levels; the Traditional Council, the Regional Houses of Chiefs and the National House of Chiefs to enhance the governance of our nation,” Nana Akufo-Addo said.

Nana Addo was in the region to join in the celebration of Togbe Afede’s new role and also to use the opportunity to thank the people of the Volta Region for their massive support in the just ended elections.

The African Fertilizer and Agribusiness Partnership (AFAP) has begun feasibility studies for the establishment of a fertilizer blending plant by the Asogli State in Ho.

The Asogli Fertilizer Blending Plant is to help revive farming in the Volta Region and provide timely and affordable fertilizer to farmers in Volta, Eastern, Ashanti and Brong Ahafo Regions.

Mr Isaac Kwadwo Asare, Country Manager, AFAP, while briefing journalists in Ho, said the Plant blends different types of fertilizer for specific soil and crop types for greater yield.

He said his outfit had done data assessment and was ready to have the first blending plant close to the farming communities.

Mr Asare said the project includes regular and vigorous education on fertilizer use and the creation of market for farm produce of clients of the Asogli Fertilizer Company Limited.

He said the project, scheduled to start next year, would provide more than 2,000 direct and indirect employment in the Volta Region.

Mr Theophilus Zotorglo, in charge of Fertilizer Registration, Plant Protection and Regulatory Services, Department of Agriculture in the Volta Region, said currently farmers in the region use generic fertilizer, which increases soil acidity and affects yields and welcomed the project.

Mr Francis Seglah, in charge of the Government Fertilizer Subsidy Programme, Department of Agriculture, said fertilizer usage in the Region is very low and that averagely, usage was around 30 kilogrammes per hectare and blamed the situation on cost of fertilizer.
