PSC Tema Shipyard has made gains by recording 24 vessels that used her facility for drydocking activities between January and September 2017.

The figure indicates an improvement on the shipyard’s performance since 2014.
PSC Tema Shipyard has one of her two graving docks being the largest between the southern tip of Europe and Cape of Good Hope in South Africa.

“Our current achievement in recording more ships is due to pragmatic management and stability of the yard after the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) took over on July 1, 2016,” a senior management personnel at the drydock told The Ghanaian Chronicle.

The yard in 2014, worked on 20 vessels and the figure rose to 23 ships in the following year.
However, between January and June of last year, a period when the shipyard was plaqued with several industrial unrests, the yard witnessed a dramatic drop in vessel call for drydocking which stood at only four.

When the GPHA took over, between July and December, 2016, the Captain Francis Micah-led management endeavoured to work on 18 ships.

This year’s performance of 24 vessels from January to September and many still in queue to be serviced, is generally observed as good omen for the yard.

The Petroleum Commission has begun engaging some oil companies to give the Tema Shipyard a face-lift.

The Director of Special Services at the Petroleum Commission, Kwaku Boateng, said this would strengthen the capacity of the Shipyard to fabricate parts locally for use in the Petroleum industry.

“Tema Shipyard has a good capacity to ensure that we fabricate components of FPSO and other oil installations here. There are still some challenges here, the equipment are outmoded, but they have a good facility. What we are trying to do is to collaborate with them and some oil companies to make sure that we revitalize the facility so that we can fabricate component of FPSOs and vessel repairs here in Ghana,” he said.

Currently, the Shipyard and the Drydock at Tema, can service vessels of various sizes. But Kwaku Boateng, who was speaking at the Public Accounts Committee sitting on Monday, said the move is in line with the local content policy of the Commission.

The Tema Shipyard is one of the largest shipyards and dry-docks on the African Continent. It is located on a 48.45 acre land adjacent the Commercial Port of Tema.

It has two (2) graving docks of 100,000 dwt and 10,000 dwt capacity, and a 150 tonnage slipway.

The shipyard is capable of servicing various size vessels and offshore operating facilities, from small vessels to very large ships, oil tankers, barges and rigs, operating within the Gulf of Guinea and those from-and-to Southern Africa and those en-route to Northern Africa and Europe.

The senior and junior staff workers union executives of the Tema Shipyard have blamed the General secretary of the Maritime and Dock Workers Union for the purported confusion at the company.

According to the union executives, Mr Owusu Koranteng who is the General Secretary of the Maritime and Dock Workers Union is unhappy with the new merger between PSC Tema Shipyard and the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority,  thus he is using a few union members to disrupt operations.

The Seniors Staff Union Chairman, Christian Kofi Dogbe said “there is no tension mounting within the Tema Shipyard company and there is no iota of truth in the reportage which was maliciously planted in the media by some disgruntled union members of MDU.

Currently as we speak, the company is doing just fine and we have received quite a number of first class vessels for maintenance works”

He noted that Mr Owusu Koranteng’s outburst is as a result of the formation of a rivalry union group by name PSMDU which has more numbers as compared to the mother union MDU.

“The problem is that, a new union has emerged which MDU is unhappy with and also MDU want government to abrogate the merger between PSC Tema Shipyard and GPHA which majority of us are opposed. The company has come of age and we shall not allow it to be toyed with again” he stressed.

Mr Dogbe said ever since GPHA took over, things have highly improved in the yard and more vessels have been docking for maintenance works.

“Mr Owusu Koranteng is the main problem we are facing here at Tema Shipyard because of his parochial interest and we shall resist any untoward move by him and his assigns to save the image of Tema Shipyard.”

The Junior staff union secretary of PSMDU, Stephen Tetteh Quaye also accused the Maritime and Dock Workers Union of double standard by calling for the abrogation of the merger between the Shipyard and GPHA.

He said in a press conference held in Accra on the 15th of August 2013, the MDU advocated for a merger between GPHA and Shipyard adding that, it is however questionable for the same union to be calling for an abrogation after the said proposal has been met.

“If not for personal parochial interest why would the same Union which quoted the GPHA as having the financial muscle to manage Tema Shipyard turn back and call for another proposal for a succesful and fruitfhl merger to be abrogated after their wishes have been met,”he questioned.

Mr Quaye called on the new government not to heed to the calls from the MDU since it does not represent the views of the majority of the staff.

He assured the public and its clients from neighbouring countries not to be alarmed by the false reportage and continue to use the Tema Drydock as their number one vessel maintenance yard.

Vice President Mahamadu Bawumia paid a surprise visit to the Public Procurement Authority today [Thursday], to familiarize himself with the Authority’s operations.

Dr. Bawumia explained that, the visit was borne out of government’s desire to chart a new course and tackle challenges facing the Authority.

“If you look at corruption in the sector, I say  probably 95% plus of it is from procurement, and so we are trying to give the public procurement authority as much as we can to execute its mandate. The Chief Executive has basically made it clear that he wants to chart a new course which is what we want to support,” he explained.

We’ll ensure value for money

The Vice President said the Authority, under the NPP administration, will  ensure due diligence and value for money in every procurement.

“For every procurement, there is going to be due diligence and value for money. This is new and a new team is going to be set up here to do this.We want to bring in a lot of transparency in the procurement process, but we want to bring in technology and so we are moving towards  E-procurement.”

“Chief Executive has already said that starting in June, we are going to begin the process, which means that every procurement will have its identification number and you can track it from each stage to the end so it is going to be very transparent…There will not be any surprises.”

The NPP administration has for the first time appointed a Minister of state in charge of public procurement.

Member of Parliament for Dome Kwabenya, and Deputy Majority Leader, Adwoa Sarfo, who’s  a professional lawyer with specialization in Procurement Law, is the Minister for that unit.

Ace Ghanaian rapper, Michael Owusu Addo, popularly known in showbiz as Sarkodie, has been unveiled as the 2014 Ambassador for the Ghana National Breastfeeding Campaign.

The multi award-winning artiste is to use his fame to promote the culture of breastfeeding among nursing mothers across the country.

In his acceptance remarks as the ambassador, the rapper explained the importance of breastfeeding to the wellbeing of children and nursing mothers. He was speaking at the launch of the 2014 World Breastfeeding Week by the Ghana Health Service (GHS) on Wednesday in Accra.

According to him, breastfeeding prevents babies from frequently falling ill and thus saves parents from spending their scarce financial resources on medical bills.

“Breastfeeding is very essential, and it is to save yourself the cost and the stress of going to the hospital all the time just because your child has fallen sick because he/she has not taken the right nutrients which are derived from breast milk,” he said.

He urged young mothers to constantly breastfeed their babies for at least a period exceeding six months.

He added; “I will let my followers know about the importance of breastfeeding exceeding six months… I will do everything I can to promote the idea. I will use my social media platforms to educate the public on the need to breastfeed babies.”

The ‘Give It to Me’ rapper disclosed that the rate of breastfeeding among young Ghanaian mothers was very low.

Africa is rising and gaining prominence in the world. The story of Africa as told to global audiences is gradually changing, even though there is a lot of room for improvement.

Ghana’s award winning Hip-hop artiste Sarkodie says even though Africa is rising one issue that still needs attention is unity. His concern is captured in the promotional video for Multichoice Africa’s Africa Rising campaign.

According to Sarkodie, “Africa is rising up but I think we have one issue to solve, that is unity which we keep preaching. That’s the only way we can move forward. Now we are moving individually which makes it a bit hard for us to attain whatever we want to attain.”

He further explained that the unity of Africa would consolidate the gains of the continent.

“From the standing point as a musician, if we were to be one, my impact would have been much more greater than now. I would not be a Ghanaian artiste but an African artiste,” he said.

Watch African stars talking about #AfricaRising

MultiChoice’s Africa Rising, is a campaign focussed on creating shared value, designed to inspire Africans to become involved in community-based social investment projects.

The campaign is supported by Channel O Africa and has Tiwa Savage, Davido, Sarkodie, Micasa, Diamond and Lola Rae driving the campaign.

MultiChoice has released a music video featuring the Africa Rising ambassadors. The video, which was filmed in Ghana sees the ambassadors preaching the language of hope, positivity and African pride.
