A Circuit Court in Tarkwa has sentenced a farmer to four years imprisonment for slashing his co-tenant’s head and hand with a cutlass.

Kojo Takyi, who was charged with causing harm, pleaded guilty to the offence and was convicted on his own plea.

Police Chief Inspector Faustina Celestina Anaman, told the court presided over by Mr. Emnanuel Bart-Plange Brew, that the complainant, James Adomako and Takyi, reside at Pieso, near Aboso in the Prestea Huni/Valley District.

She said Adomako and Takyi are co-tenants and both shared one corridor.

Chief Inspector Anaman explained to the court that, on February 8, at about 1930 hours, the complainant after returning from the farm took his bath and decided to stay outside for fresh air as his room was hot.

The prosecution said while Adomako was relaxing on a mat, the accused who had then returned from the farm entered the corridor with the volume of his radio set very loud.

She said the complainant pleaded with the convict to lower the volume on his radio set, but he ignored and rather hanged it on his door and went to take his bath.

After Takyi had finished bathing, Chief Inspector Anaman said he splashed the water in his sponge on the complainant who got angry and slapped Takyi.

The convict then went for a cutlass in his room and slashed Adomako’s head and hand and fled from the house.

She said the complainant reported the matter to the police where he was issued with a medical report form to attend hospital for treatment.

Chief Inspector Anaman said the complainant together with some neighbours later got hold of Takyi and handed him over to the police.

The Police Command in Tarkwa has explained that workers of Gold Fields Ghana who demonstrated today [Monday], did so without notifying them as required by the Public Order Act.

“They never sought any permission from the police. No one even gave us notice. The Public Order Act says you have to notify the police,” the Tarkwa Divisional Commander, ACP Edmond Ohene Bosompim told Citi News.

[contextly_sidebar id=”inIy8F7ggbBkn9XVGTQYzfhDucFR9AWN”]The protesters had blocked the entrance to the company obstructing workers returning from shifts, and patients trying to seek medical care from the company’s hospital.

ACP Bosompim said negotiations with the protesters proved futile prompting the police to resort to firing tear gas to disperse them.

Seven workers were also arrested following the demonstration on Monday morning.

“If everybody can just wake up and say we are blocking roads, what will the country look like? So in such situations, we don’t have to allow those things to go on and as I told you, we were able to talk to them but once they failed to understand us, there was no other option than to disperse them,” he explained.

ACP Bosompim added that “if they have any issue with the management, they can go to the appropriate place because I know they know their left from right.”

The workers were protesting Gold Fields Ghana’s decision to opt for contract mining, which is expected to result in huge retrenchments. In all, some 1,500 workers are to be affected.

This was after an Accra High Court dismissed an injunction application filed by the Ghana Mine Workers Union to stop Gold Fields from switching to contract mining.

The union argued that about 1,500 workers would lose their jobs if the company is allowed to switch from owner mining to contract mining, but the High Court dismissed the application.

About four persons reportedly left the demonstration with some injuries following the confrontation with the security personnel.

They were said to be at the Tarkwa Government Hospital receiving treatment.

Some of the protesters alleged that they were brutalized by the police.

The union argued that about 1,500 workers would lose their jobs if the company is allowed to switch from owner mining to contract mining, but the High Court dismissed the application.

Speaking to Citi News, the Deputy General Secretary of the Mine Workers Union, Abdul-Moomin Gbana, said the demonstration was suspended following the arrest.

“We left this morning, numbering over 100, and our plan was to demonstrate to Gold Fields management our displeasure and disappointment at the atrocities visited upon us.”

“So in the process, we were accosted by armed military officers and some police officers. They started firing tear gas. One of the military men used his gun to hit the head of one of the workers,” Abdul-Moomin claimed.

About four persons reportedly left the demonstration with serious injuries after the confrontation with the security personnel.

They are said to be at the Tarkwa Government Hospital receiving treatment.

At least one other person is alleged to have sustained injuries from rubber bullets.

Protest from township

Residents of Tarkwa on January 19, took to some principal streets of the town to protest against the decision by Gold Fields Ghana to shift from ownership mining to contract mining.

The leadership of the demonstrators accused Gold Fields of shortchanging the country after receiving juicy packages from the previous administration in the spirit of expanding its operations to employ more of the teeming youth, as a result of the ban on small-scale illegal mining.

A Tarkwa circuit court has fined a Liberian GH¢ 18,000 for mining illegally and causing harm.

The convict, Paul Nakaah, unemployed, who pleaded guilty to the crime, will in default serve 48 months in prison.

Prosecuting, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), Juliana Essel-Dadzie told the court that the complainant in the case is a resident of Kaniakor Top site and the convict resides at Nsueam.

She said that on January 11 this year, at about 4pm, the complainant saw the convict prospecting for gold in front of his shop.

The complainant then got closer to Nakaah and asked why he was searching for gold nuggets in front from his shop.

The prosecution said a quarrel ensued between them and the convict, who took offense, stabbed the complainant with a chisel on the left cheek whilst he was explaining the issue to a witness in this case.

She said the complainant sustained a deep cut and bled profusely.

ASP Essel-Dadzie said the complainant reported the case to the police and was issued with a medical report form to attend hospital for treatment.

The prosecutor said on February 2 the convict was arrested by the community police personnel at Nsueam and was later handed over to the Nsueam police to help them in their investigation

The Indian man who is alleged to have sexually abused a three-year-old girl in a swimming pool in Tarkwa, has been remanded into police custody after the case was recalled.

He was charged with indecent assault after he allegedly inserted his fingers into the genitals of the three-year-old girl in a swimming pool, when he had said he was teaching her to swim.

[contextly_sidebar id=”TsMqMuVulDIGUntOxJgnpbhTPSTQ1hAc”]The judge sitting on the matter had earlier convicted him to a fine of GHc1,200 and GHc4,200 as compensation to the victim, but the mother of the victim rejected the compensation.

The case has thus been recalled by the judge, and will be heard again on Wednesday in the wake of a Citi News report on the matter.

Background

When the Indian national, along with a counterpart offered the swimming lesson, the mother of the children initially hesitated, but she agreed after the strangers convinced her that learning to swim early was the best way.

While the Indians were with the girl, the mother was filming them with her phone and in between the session, the woman noticed her daughter was crying, but she misinterpreted it as a reaction to the fear of being in the pool.

The doctor who conducted medical examinations on the three-year-old girl concluded her genitals were bruised by the penetration of a finger.

The police were involved, but the mother of victim suspected an attempt to cover up the matter.

Her attempts to get the Tarkwa Police to follow up on the issue proved futile, forcing her to fall on the Nsuta Police to effect his arrest.

Her confidence in the police began to shrink after their suspicious conduct with the bosses of the Indian suspect.

According to the woman, who spoke to Citi News, in the course of pursuing the matter, the Indian suspect sought an out of court settlement, but soon changed his mind, saying he was ready to face the court.

She also lamented how the police prosecutor impressed on the judge that presided over the matter in court to fine the suspect rather than to jail him.

She said she was forced watch the police negotiate the compensation from an initial GHS8,400 suggested by the judge, to GHS4,200.

‘Defiled’ 3-yr old girl at risk of long-term trauma – Doctor

Dr. Joseph Darko, the Physician who examined the three-year-old girl alleged to have been sexually violated in a swimming pool at Tarkwa in the Western Region, is worried about the potential trauma the girl could grow up with.

Speaking on Eyewitness News, Dr. Darko said, “the implications of such an action will probably not be felt now. Apart from the pain the little girl went through, she probably will also [suffer] the long-term effects of what has happened.”

[contextly_sidebar id=”zrrfFwSLi78NlzrgXW4IBblCnxMfezD3”]He said she may “associate the fears of what she had with her surroundings, probably fear of men and water and all that. She might grow up being an introvert because of what has happened,”  thus, he suggested some psychiatric help for the girl.

“I spoke with the mother. I told her the child will need some form of assessment and so on to prevent the future implications.”

Dr. Darko also said it was clear that, per his assessment, her injuries sustained in her genital area were “as a result of some form of assault. They were not natural bruises that she had there.”

An Indian national was picked up as the prime suspect in this sexual assault.

It all started when two Indian nationals swimming in the pool asked to teach the children how to swim.

The mother of the children initially hesitated, but she agreed after the strangers convinced her that learning to swim early was the best way.

While the Indians were with the girl, the mother was filming the process with her smartphone.

‘Little girl cries’

In between the session, the woman noticed her daughter was crying, but she misinterpreted it as a reaction to the fear of being in the pool.

Unaware to her, the Indian, was sexually abusing her, and the cries, were cries for help.

One of the Indians held the 3-year-old girl closely to his chest with his right hand while inserting a left finger into the little girl’s vagina.

The doctor who conducted medical examinations on the 3-year-old girl said her genitals were bruised.

“She had sores around her genitals, around the vagina and the hymen had sores around it,” the doctor said.

‘Police case’

The victim’s mother suspects attempts by the police to cover up the matter.  She returned to the Tarkwa Police after an initial report to them with the medical report.

She also hired a private detective to help track down the Indian molester who she had captured in a video on her phone.

Her attempts to get the Tarkwa Police to follow up on the issue proved futile, forcing her to fall on the Nsuta Police to effect his arrest.

Her confidence in the police began to shrink after their suspicious conduct with the bosses of the Indian suspect.

‘Out of court settlement’

According to the woman, who spoke to Citi News’ Caleb Kudah, in the course of pursuing the matter, the Indian suspect sought an out of court settlement, but soon changed his mind, saying he was ready to face the court.

‘Don’t jail him’

To further hurt her heart, the mother lamented how the police prosecutor impressed on the judge that presided over the matter in court to fine the suspect rather than to jail him.

She said she was forced to bitterly watch the police negotiate the compensation from an initial GHS8,400 suggested by the judge, to GHS4,200.

‘Seeking justice’

The victims mother is seeking justice for her 3-year-old daughter whose genitals have been bruised by an Indian national and betrayed by law enforcement body in her own country to sell her daughter’s rights for GHS4,200.

The mother of a three-year-old gir l who is alleged to have been sexually abused by an adult Indian National in a swimming pool at  Tarkwa in the Western Region, desperately wants justice for her daughter.

The victim’s mother suspects attempts by the police to cover up the matter.

How did it happen?

It all started when two Indian nationals swimming in the pool asked to teach the children how to swim. The mother, [who we’ll refer to as Afiba] of the children initially hesitated, but she agreed after the strangers convinced her that learning to swim early was the best way.

While the Indians supposedly taught her daughter how to swim, she filmed the process with her smartphone.

In between the session, the woman noticed her daughter was crying, but she misinterpreted it as a reaction to the fear of being in the pool.

“She had sores around her genitals, around the vagina and the hymen had sores around it,” the doctor said.

Of the psychological state of the girl and Afiba, he said they were traumatized.

‘Police case’

The Afiba returned to the Tarkwa Police after an initial report to them with the medical report.

She also hired a private detective to help track down the Indian molester who she had captured in a video on her phone.

Her attempts to get the Tarkwa Police to follow up on the issue proved futile, forcing her to fall on the Nsuta Police to effect his arrest.

Just Others and You [JOY] Foundation in Tarkwa in the Tarkwa Nsuaem Municipality of the Western Region on Tuesday December 26 assembled a host of privileged and underprivileged children from the municipality and treated them to good food, entertainment and drinks.

The move was part of activities climaxing the successful launch of the foundation’s commitment to putting smiles on the faces of underprivileged children in Tarkwa and nearby communities.

JOY Foundation is a non-governmental organization in Tarkwa led by Jocelyn Andoh which primarily focuses on “assembling street children and providing them with quality formal education the Christian way” to secure the future of Ghana.

Some of the over 300 children who gathered at the Tarkwa Municipal Car Park took turns in the ‘pick and act’, choreography, and singing and dancing competitions.

Other children exhibited their skills on drums and other musical instruments. The artistic facial paintings were just irresistible for many of the lovely children many of whom were in Joy Foundation dresses.

Speaking to Citi News the Chief Executive Officer of JOY Foundation Jocelyn Andoh bemoaned the present situation of children on the streets of Ghana.

“…We also know of the situation in the Tarkwa Nsuaem Municipality. There are quite a number of children on the street, and it is our hope that JOY Foundation will assist to get them off the street and give them quality education with Christian values as well”.

It is Christmas, and this is in our view the best time to put some smiles in the faces of all these Children you see here”.

The Municipal Chief executive for the Tarkwa Nsueaem Municipal Assembly, Ken Asmah, commended the foundation for their initiative to “give hope for these children who might have found themselves on the streets not by their wishes”.

“We as the assembly is ready to offer you the necessary support to realize this initiative”.

There were other performances from Nero X and others who were invited to complete the entertainment package meant for these children.

The Tarkwa-Nsuaem Divisional Commander of the Ghana Police Service, ACP Edmond Ohene Bosompem, has confirmed to Citi News, the transfer of the Dompim Station officer who allegedly assaulted a female suspect.

ACP Ohene Bosompem indicated that, the officer has been transferred to allow an ongoing investigation into his conduct to proceed.

[contextly_sidebar id=”PNUqkVSswF10Fr57EgiEzPM6UiYcrDGY”]The station officer is said to have whipped a female suspect on her buttocks causing severe lacerations on her skin, as pictures available to citifmonline.com show.“He is now working under me in Tarkwa, ACP Ohene Bosompem said.

ACP Bosompem said the service considers the alleged assault “a serious one”, and therefore the officer was transferred immediately.

According to him, “a station office is a command post. So for someone who is holding a position and a case of such nature has been reported about you, it will be very important that he is relieved of his post for another person to come so that we conduct our investigation.”

The Dompim Police Station Officer is alleged to have lashed the 29-year-old resident of the town over a marital dispute which is said to have been resolved two months ago.

ACP Bosompem hinted that investigation into the matter is almost completed.

“We are conducting a thorough investigation into the case for now. The victim has been issued a medical form. She has returned from the hospital… we have taken statements from witnesses. The policeman has also submitted his statement. As I speak, we are almost done with our investigation.”

Considering that the matter is being investigated within the same command, there are suggestions the investigation may be skewed in the favour of the police.

But ACP Ohene Bosompim insisted there is no cause for alarm assuring that the police will not cover up anything.

He explained that “We have to ensure that the right thing is done. The fact that he is a policeman and alleged to have committed the offence does not mean that immediately he should be dismissed. The normal procedure should go on.”

He assured that should there be any adverse findings against the officer in question, he will not be shielded.

Woman whipped by police on her buttocks for resisting cells

According to the victim, Sarah Darko, 29, the police officer first hit her with a plastic object and later with a stick, when she refused to enter the station’s cells.

Narrating her ordeal to Citi News, Sarah explained that “In August this year, I returned from my two months trip to my room to meet my husband and another woman. Out of anger and frustration, I slapped the woman and she in return hit me with a phone. The matter was taken to an elder in the town where it was amicably settled.

She continued that “ but when we all thought the matter has been put to rest, two months later, with me staying peacefully with my husband, the lady returned this Wednesday 1st November to my house with three police officers. They told me I was under arrest. I joined them to the Dompim Police station. After informing me that it was upon my rival’s instruction I was brought there, they asked me to go into the cell which I refused.”

Sarah continued that “Inspector Emmanuel Osei started forcing me into the cell but again I told him the matter has been settled already so I will not go in there. So I held the counter table when the inspector was forcing me into the cells. He started hitting my hand with a [plastic] ruler. Then he went for a stick and started whipping me hard at my buttocks and in my palms until he finally forced me into the cell.”

Sarah went through the ordeal in the presence of his husband, one Francis Tofega, who had also gone to the police station over the same matter.

Later, Inspector Emmanuel Osei allegedly demanded a GHc400 bailing fee after several pleas from Sarah’s husband, which was reduced to GHc350, and she paid.

Sarah, feeling dissatisfied, took the matter to the Nsueam Police station.

Ten Chinese illegal Miners have been arrested by police in Tarkwa in the Western Region.

They were arrested upon a tip off by a member of the galamsey  task-force in the area.

The illegal miners were mining opposite the Tarkwa Senior High School very close to an area where the Lands Ministry was holding a National Stakeholders’ workshop on the Multilateral Mining Integrated Project (MMIP).

Deputy Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Benito Owusu who lead the team of police officers to make the arrest told journalists that the fight against galamsey is very difficult but the ministry will not give up.

“Chinese people are doing this illegal activity; they’ve recruited our own people to be working with them. The pit that they are using is a very old pit and it’s been there for years without any safety precautionary measure being put in place they are in there and they are mining. Tomorrow we will hear about a cave in and that becomes another issue.”

“The idea that they think they are not polluting any water or causing land degradation but we all saw the amount of water that they were pumping from the pit. So if they tell us that they are not polluting any water what do they mean by that?”

Mr. Owusu also complained that the Electricity Company of Ghana’s branch at Tarkwa provided the Chinese miners with electricity to undertake the illegality.

“We saw Electricity Company of Ghana goes in and supply power to an illegal activity while their own regulation states that before they supply power to any premises, they must know who the owner is, they must know what work you are going to use the power for. And if it is an illegal activity they have every right to deny them power. When we get to Accra, we will report them to their main office so they know what their agency is doing here,” he added.

Other Chinese illegal miners have already been arrested in other areas including Kyebi in Eastern Region for engaging in illegal mining.
