The Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH) can now boast of an emergency centre to cater for patients infected with Ebola and other deadly diseases.

As the only infectious disease isolation centre, it is expected to augment the nation’s emergency preparedness and response to outbreaks of contagious diseases.

The facility has a capacity of about 20 beds, a water tanker and an ambulance bay as prescribed by the World Health Organisation in the wake of the Ebola outbreak in West Africa back in 2014.

The newly-constructed facility, known as the Infectious Disease Treatment Centre (IDTC) was funded by the Korean government under the auspices of the Korean International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), at the cost of 1.5 million cedis.

A Deputy Minister for Health, Kingsley Aboagye Gyedu inaugurated the facility and thanked the Korean government for its humanitarian services.

Mr. Gyedu urged all health staff in the three regions of the north to take advantage of the facility and improve health care delivery in that part of the country.

“The IDTC needs competent staff and appropriate equipment to ensure effective and efficient delivery of suitable services to clients sent to the centre.”

The KOICA’s Country Director, Yukyum Kim reiterated the Korean government’s commitment to helping Ghana succeed in attaining her Millennium Development Goals saying, “the government of Korea will continue to be Ghana’s closest partner in development.”

The Chief Executive Officer of the Tamale Teaching Hospital, Dr. Azaawomya Akolbila commended the Korean government for uplifting the hospital’s image with the siting of the Center at the facility.

“I thank the Korean government for providing funds for the construction of the centre which is expected to serve the entire Northern Ghana.”

Dr. Akolbila underscored the need for government to make it fully functional.

“This place is situated in a lowland area and is therefore flood-prone. Extensive external works, including further filling, paving and drainages are needed to prevent the centre from flooding during the rainy season. Also, with training as part of its intended functions, the centre will need training equipment.”

“I wish to appeal to KOICA again, the Honourable Regional Minister and the Metropolitan Chief Executive to consider extending an access road to this centre and also provide a gated fence wall to secure the premises,” he added.

These include boxes of canolas, disinfectants, monitors, catheter, boxes of NG tubes, suction device, syringe pump, pulse oximeter and minor surgical and OPD equipment.

The donation was done through her benevolent organization called Samira Empowerment and Humanitarian Project.

Dr. Kolbilla appealed to government to fix the hospital’s myriad of challenges including staff accommodation and hostels for patients’ relatives.

He bemoaned the hospital’s broken down oxygen plant leading to the erratic supply of medical oxygen to patients. He also raised concern about infrequent water supply and shortages of basic consumables.

Dr. Z. Kobila exposed some selfish staff who illegally extort monies from patients and called for a stop to such inhumane practice.

The Northern Regional Minister, Salifu Sa-eed, on behalf of the chiefs and people thanked the Second Lady for her kind gesture.

He admonished her to do more since she has the hospital at heart.  Salifu Sa-eed urged management and staff to improve their cordial relations.

Donations to basic schools in Tamale

Hajia Samira Bawumia earlier donated library books to three selected schools within the Tamale Metropolitan Area.

She symbolically handed the donation over to the school heads at the Zogbeli Block ‘A’ cluster of schools.

Work has begun to fix the Tamale Teaching Hospital’s (TTH) Oxygen Plant to ensure the constant supply of oxygen at the facility to better serve the increasing number of patients.

Dr. David Zaawumya Kolbila, Chief Executive Officer of TTH, who announced this when briefing journalists on developments at the hospital in Tamale on Friday, said the work to fix the oxygen plant would be completed by the middle of next month.

Dr. Zaawumya Kolbila said the capacity of the oxygen plant was also being improved such that it would serve other hospitals in the region, besides the TTH.

The TTH’s Oxygen Plant broke down about two years ago forcing the hospital to spend nearly GH¢100,000.00 monthly to purchase oxygen from private sources.

Dr. Zaawumya Kolbila said measures had been instituted to ensure the efficient management of the oxygen plant to better serve the hospital.

He said Management had also put in place systems to ensure effective running of the hospital to make it a preferred tertiary health care provider in the country.

The Northern Regional Police Command has reinforced Police visibility at the precincts of the Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH).

Police personnel were today [Tuesday] dotted at some vantage points there. This followed a rancor between two pro-New Patriotic Party (NPP) groups over legitimacy to the Tamale Teaching Hospital Chief Executive Officer (CEO) position.

[contextly_sidebar id=”HT5MjMwQSPcMi5lygp2Xuy0OWvj8MQUP”]Citifmonline.com checks revealed that, both the incumbent CEO, Dr. Prosper Akambong, and his supposed successor, Dr. David Zaawumya Kolbila were missing at post.

Background

The incumbent CEO, who has 16 months to serve his tenure, Dr. Prosper Akambong on Monday refused to hand over to Dr. David Zaawumya Kolbila.

He doubted the authenticity of a purported appointment letter which instructed him to hand over to Dr. Kolbila. He served notice that he wouldn’t vacate post until he received official correspondence determining his fate.

The situation led to a scuffle between a vigilante group affiliated to the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kandahar Boys supporting Dr. Zaawumya Kolbila and a group calling itself Coalition of Concerned Dagbon Youth opposing the supposed incoming CEO’s appointment.

Some of the casualties are nursing their wounds whilst the Northern Regional Coordinating Council tries to resolve the impasse.

NPP youth groups clash

Meanwhile, two youth groups of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) reportedly clashed over Dr. Zaawumya Kolbila’s supposed appointment.

Whereas a group calling itself the Coalition of Dagbon Youth groups in Tamale is opposed to Dr. Kolbila’s supposed appointment, some members of the Kandahar Boys have declared their support for him.

Eyewitness account suggested that, some members of the Kandahar Boys group foiled a news conference by the Coalition of Dagbon Youth groups held at the Tamale Kaladan Park, which sought to kick against Dr. Kolbila’s supposed appointment.

The scuffle left some members of the Coalition of Dagbon Youth groups injured.

The Tamale Teaching Hospital has lately gained negative publicity on several allegations including maladministration, and the NPP vigilante groups’ call for the Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Prosper Akambong’s dismissal.

HFC Bank has opened two cash collection points at the Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH) premises from which customers can access 24 hours banking services.

This is to make it easy for non-subscribers to the National Health Insurance Scheme to make payments required for medical services.

With the intention to establish a third outlet, one is at the main entrance and the other is at the accidents and emergency ward.

HFC Bank’s General Manager in charge of Finance and Strategy, Benjamin Dzoboku at the official handing over ceremony said the bank valued customer loyalty, hence the establishment of cash collection outlets at the major referral health facility.

38cc9e2a-e5f0-4dc5-ad9e-2f233ee042b7

“For our good customer services and delivery we just want to make it easy for our customers to have easy access to banking services at the hospital.”

According to him, the bank as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CRS) intends to fund some projects upon a request put forward by the hospital management.

“Management of the hospital put up some request and very soon we will respond to it because our strategy is that everywhere that we work the community must benefit from us and it is part of the HFC policy.”

“We have to do something that the management will appreciate and that will benefit the community that we serve.”

666f81be-3dbf-45bf-8147-d5ff67abc71e

Benjamin Dzoboku explained why the HFC Bank could be trusted for unmatched banking services saying, “HFC, one of our core banking services is customer service delivery and all our customers can attest to the fact that we have excellent customer service delivery.”

“We have a very good product from zero age to pension age and if you go to even loans, we have fantastic rates and so there is the need for everybody to test HFC and know what the bank is doing.”

“We started as a mortgage company and migrated to universal banking and we can understand that we started at the grassroots and now we have 43 branches across the nation. This is a bank that you can rely on and this is the bank that you can trust that if you save with us your money will be save and you can attest to our customer delivery,” he underscored.

Chief Executive Officer of the Tamale Teaching Hospital, Dr. Prosper Akambong thanked the bank’s management for the good working relationship over time.

“Over the years we have enjoyed a good working relationship with them as a business partner and this is one of the examples to show how far our relationship has advanced over the past years.”

He believed the cash collection centres will make it easy for patients outside the NHIS brackets to make payments as required for services.

Management of the Tamale Teaching Hospital has dismissed media reports suggesting that the use of expired anesthetic drugs and oxygen shortage, caused the death of three patients on admission.

The three unidentified persons as reported by an Accra based radio station, died because of oxygen shortage and surgeons’ refusal to administer expired anesthetic drugs on them.

[contextly_sidebar id=”TYnel2hmeO1pbxexXG2pBEk8Yk1wLId2″]Director of Pharmacy at the Tamale Teaching Hospital, Hamid Abdulai in a Citi News interview, dismissed the reportage.

He insisted that it was a fabrication, and urged the general public to treat it with the contempt that it deserves.

“There is no issue, statement or occurrence of loss of any lives due to the use of expired anesthesia medications. There has never been the occurrence of issuance of any expired product whatsoever to that unit and all other units involved. As far as we are concerned the story is completely false.”

According to him, the hospital had enough stock of anesthetic drugs and wondered why such untruth should be peddled in the media.

“The hospital secured anesthetic medication notably vecuronium on 28th February 2017, but the head of the anesthesia unit Mr. Mumuni stated that his people will not accept this particular brand called Nor-Q.”

“Upon our verification, this happens to be the only brand available in the country; but they insist that they will not be able to use it claiming that it is ineffective.”

“Verifying with other sister facilities including Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, Cape Coast Teaching Hospital and Tamale West Hospital indicates that it is the same product that anesthetists across the country have been using for some time now without any problems,” Hamid Abdulai lamented.

Hamid Abdulai however admitted that, power struggle within the hospital management is the cause of the media rant.

“I do not know what claims our anesthetists are putting forward and what they are seeking to achieve as other anesthetists in the country have been using this product successfully.”

The Tamale Teaching Hospital has lately gained media prominence for negative reasons.

Apart from some pressure groups call for the Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Prosper Akambong’s removal from office, others are accusing management of embezzlement.

The Northern Regional Minister, Salifu Saeed, has finally unlocked the office of the Tamale Teaching Hospital Chief Executive Officer (CEO).

Dr. Prosper Akambong’s office has for the past one week been under lock and key by a vigilante group affiliated to the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kandahar Boys.

The Kandahar Boys’ action followed other pressure group’s call for Dr. Prosper Akambong’s removal from office.

This happened when Salifu Saeed was not inducted into office as regional Minister. The regional Minister on Tuesday February 28, 2017,  visited the Tamale Teaching Hospital and unlocked the CEO’s office.

He condemned the nationwide post election violence, and impressed upon members of pressure groups in the region to use the appropriate administrative structures to address their grievances.

He unequivocally served notice that the Nana Addo-Bawumia led NPP administration will not tolerate lawlessness. Salifu Saeed assured the hospital management of cordial relations to improve efficiency at the major health referral facility.

Dr. Prosper Akambong thanked the regional Minister for his intervention. He dispelled allegations of corruption, nepotism and selective justice leveled against him, and assured government of competent leadership.

Tamale Metropolitan YEA secretariat

The regional Minister also opened the Tamale Metropolitan Secretariat of the Youth Employment Agency (YEA) at Choggu, Hilltop.

He reiterated the need for some aggrieved youth groups affiliated to the governing NPP to desist from locking state institutions. Salifu Saeed promised to administer the region in line with the government’s transformational agenda.

Background

It would be recalled that the Kandahar Boys’ Secretary, Iddris Abdul Hack, on Tuesday February 21, 2017, masterminded the closure of Dr. Akambong’s office.

He revealed that, the group’s action foiled other NPP youth group’s intention to picket at the hospital premises, Wednesday February 22. Iddris Abdul Hack reaffirmed his group’s commitment to zealously protect the hospital.

Northern Young Patriots demand

The Northern Young Patriots earlier at a news conference, also demanded the immediate dismissal of the Tamale Teaching Hospital Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Prosper Akambong.

The group’s Chairman, Bashiru Baba, insinuated that Dr. Akambong was superintending over corruption, nepotism and abuse of human rights of staff.

He further claimed Dr. Prosper Akambong reduced the major referral health facility to a death trap.

Bashiru Baba called for forensic audit of the hospital’s accounts and the establishment of a bipartisan committee to investigate the allegations leveled against the CEO and his surrogates.

His office has been under lock and key since Tuesday February 21, by a popular vigilante group affiliated to the New Patriotic Party (NPP), the Kandahar Boys group.

The group’s action was in protest against the CEO’s alleged mismanagement of the facility. Whiles some paramedical staff of the hospital are upbeat about the incident, others are apprehensive.

[contextly_sidebar id=”qVfrKbs1TOOhb5fL7rMpUCY7tnYx9nwh”]The hospital’s Deputy Public Relations Officer, Ahmed Fareed, told Citi News the action troopers were civil in their conduct. According to him, they did not vandalize any property or attack any staff.

He also disclosed another vigilante group’s intention to picket at the hospital premises at an unknown date. Ahmed Fareed called for maximum restraint and advised those agitated persons to use the right channel to address their grievances.

He said the incident has been reported to the police and the Ministers of Health and Interior.

Kandahar Boys Secretary

The group’s Secretary, Iddris Abdul Hack, explained that the action was to safeguard the hospital. He revealed that some staff of the hospital connived with other NPP youth groups to demonstrate against the CEO, Dr. Prosper Akambong.
