The Tamale Sports Stadium was re-christened the Aliu Mahama over the weekend at a ceremony in Tamale which was attended by Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia.

The late Aliu Mahama, Vice President under the Ex-President J.A. Kuffour between 2001 and 2008, was one of the founding fathers of Real Tamale United, a once powerful Ghana Premier League side now wallowing in Division II.

The decision to rename the stadium after Aliu Mahama has attracted criticism from certain quarters, with suggestions it should have been named after a sportsman and not a politician.

But Hadzide feels Mahama’s contribution to sports development in Ghana makes him deserving of the honour.

“You’d admit that his contribution to sports in Ghana is not in doubt. And if you recollect the role that he played in the formation of RTU, you’d come to the same conclusion.

“He also championed the decentralization of sporting facilities in Ghana. In times past, sports facilities could only be found in Accra and Kumasi but through the efforts of Aliu Mahama, Tamale and Sekondi now have stadia too,” he said.

Fans of both Asante Kotoko and Accra Hearts of Oak, who have found their way into the stadium, are getting their voices heard as they sing to their clubs’ famous songs.

Earlier, there was a curtain raiser women’s football match played between Lepo Ladies and Northern Ladies with Lepo Ladies triumphing 2-0.

The MTN FA Cup final will kick off at 15:00GMT, and will be preceded by a fanfare of activities including a performance by Tamale-based top artist Fancy Gadam.

Prior to the game, fans hoping to secure tickets to watch the MTN FA Cup final faced early frustration at the gates, after being told the only means of paying for a ticket is through MTN Mobile Money.

When the gates opened at 10:01 on Sunday morning, fans who were already hanging around the stadium began to queue in excitement.

The Stars arrived in the capital of the Northern Region on Wednesday for the match. However, Grant said that he was concerned by the heat but stated that both teams would have to face the same challenge on match day.

“It will be hot for both teams. It is not nice to play in this heat and it will be good if it were cooler but it will be the same weather for both teams so we do not want to talk a lot about it.”

The Israeli coach praised the receptiveness of the fans and urged them to turn up for the match.

“The welcome from the fans was very good and the players like to be here. The atmosphere and we are happy.”

Captain Asamoah Gyan shared similar sentiments to the media.

“Fans always play an  important role in football. They play about ten percent of the match and so, we are expecting more fans on Friday. They are a part of the team.When the team is playing, we talk about Ghana and we appeal to them to come to the stadium. There are no doubts because the last two matches we have played here have been watched by a lot of fans.”

The team will train again at 3pm on Thursday while the Ugandans will train at the Tamale Stadium at 4pm on Thursday.

He first gained public attention on the fourth season of TV3’s singing competition, ‘Mentor’ in 2008,  and also won second position on the 2012 edition of Vodafone Icons (Mixed Edition), with his group, Vybz.

Also representing Ghana this season are Clement Akuoko and Rauhel Halidu Yakubu (Laami).

This is the highest representation of Ghana in the ‘Top 16 finalists’ in the 7 season history of Project Fame West Africa.

Also interesting to note is the absence of any contestant from Sierra Leone and Liberia in the cut this year.

Bolanle Olukanni will co-host the show with actor Joseph Benjamin. The 16 finalists are from Nigeria and Ghana.
