Zen Petroleum, dealers in fuel and lubricants for mining and other sectors in partnership with Paragon 99.9 FM in Takoradi have donated medical supplies and other items worth GHc 16,000 to the four hospitals in the Sekondi Takoradi Metropolis treating victims of the May 9 explosion in Takoradi.

A cash sum of GHc 5,000 was also donated to the Ghana National Fire Service “to be used as little support for families of firefighters who were caught up in inferno.”

A stationary gas tank and a loaded gas truck both exploded in the early hours of Tuesday May 9, leaving 152 persons sustaining varying degrees of injuries.

The injured include 6 firefighters from the Ghana National Fire Service who had gone there to quench the inferno. Others were students of the Opportunities Industrialization Center [IOC] and the Metro Mass Transit as well as passersby.

According to the Commercial Manager at Zen Petroleum, Kwabena Ampong, “what happened last Tuesday was a very sad incident, where firefighters in their line of duty, ordinary citizens going about their work, were all caught up in this tragic accident. We at Zen Petroleum, who are into the distribution of petroleum products, were so touched by their plight and we decided to help. Apart from wishing all the victims a speedy recovery, we have these items to support the four hospital’s effort at saving the lives of our fellow men and women.”

Items donated include gauzes, antiseptic disinfectants, bandages, gloves, boxes of bottled water among others.

At the Effia Nkwanta Regional Hospital, the acting Medical Director Dr. Richard Anthony received the items and commended the company for the gesture.

He assured the company that “we will ensure that the items will be put to good use to support the victims of the incident.”

Leadership of the Ghana Ports and Habours Authority Hospital in Takoradi, the Takoradi Government Hospital at Habour Area and the New Takoradi Health Center were also grateful.

The fire service, led by Deputy Regional Fire Officer, DO1, Veronica Naa Ajerley Konney, was also grateful to Zen Petroleum for the gesture.

She appealed to other corporate organizations to “come to our aid in times like this. We had six of our men in their line of duty injured. One of them had to be sent to the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital for further treatment whilst others are also at Effia Nkwanta.

They are all responding to treatment but we will be grateful to other organizations to follow what Zen Petroleum has done”.

The Akufo-Addo administration is putting an end to the culture of government footing the medical bills of victims of mass accidents.

It will instead lay the onus of catering for victims on the organisations implicated in whatever hazard may occur.

[contextly_sidebar id=”s5DYuAzBrqURUbh3afT0BeLCZawtocEI”]This new direction was announced by a Deputy Minister for Energy, Dr. Amin Adam, who revealed that the managers of Ghana Households Utensils Company (GHUMCO), has been asked by the government to ensure that the pay for the bills of all the affected persons in the Takoradi Gas explosion which left over 100 people with injuries.

The aftermath of incidents like these with mass casualties normally sees government pledge to cater for the medical bills of victims as well as some form of welfare support to affected families.

Dr. Amin Adam, who spoke after a visit to the explosion site, said this course of action is being taken to serve as a deterrent to other organisations that may look to compromise on safety standards.

“We have moved away from the situation where such accidents occur and government will be called upon to pay for treatment of the injured while the people responsible are at large. So we want to use this as an example.”

He assured further that, government “will follow you [GHUMCO] seriously to ensure that you pick up the bill.”

This development does not mean the government will be completely washing its hands off such incidents, according to Dr. Amin Adam.

“We want to insist that our support will not cover the cost of the treatment. It should surely be the responsibility of the managers of the facility and failure to do that means that other forms of sanctions would have to apply,” he said.

Aside from this, the government has also ordered that the license of the OMC that supplied the gas to GHUMCO be suspended with immediate effect.

Ghanaians are tired

The Deputy Minister also stressed the need to comply with safety standards, which he said would prevent accidents like this from occurring.

“We must change our ways of addressing issues like this which is why we insist that appropriate sanctions must apply. If we don’t do this then Ghanaians will not be happy about our stewardship of our affairs of this country.”

“… so this is a new regime with new ways of doing things, and I believe that Ghanaians and especially the managers of such important facilities will sit up and begin to know that government will not take lightly any form of negligence and non-compliance with regulations that will lead to the death of people and other injuries.”

The Western Regional Minister, Dr. Kwaku Afriyie, has suspended the confirmation of the MMDCE nominees ongoing in the region, following the gas explosion in Takoradi that left over a hundred persons injured on Tuesday, May 9, 2017.

The Western Regional Secretary of the New Patriotic Party, Charles Onuawonto Cromwell Bissue, made this known in an interview with Citi News.

[contextly_sidebar id=”ffSzb4rqfarXe5Ag82x7i0J1vcSywEu5″]“It will not be fair for the regional minister and the party to continue with the confirmation when over one hundred people have been affected by a gas explosion. As we speak, the regional minister Dr. Afriyie who finished supervising three confirmation exercises in the northern part of the region is on his way to Takoradi. He is scheduled to visit the various hospitals housing the victims Mr. Bissue told Citi News.

Mr. Bissue however noted that, “the confirmation exercise for Juaboso will come off as scheduled on Wednesday, because Juaboso is the first on the confirmation exercise timetable for Wednesday, and it will go on as planned.

“The Minister has already directed someone to supervise the exercise on his behalf. The rest are on hold” he added.

He appealed to assembly members in the affected districts to bear with the party as it will not be politically correct to continue with the exercise when such misfortune has befallen the region.

“The regional minister is the political head of the region, he represents the President here, therefore he cannot do politics when his people are grieving”.

Nine districts were to have their  confirmation on Wednesday. They are Juaboso, Sefwi Wiawso, Bibiani Anhwiaso Bekwai, Amenfi East, Amenfi Central and Amenfi West. The rest are Prestea Huni Valley, Tarkwa Nsuaem and Ahanta West.
