The Management and Students of Serwaa Kesse Girls Senior High School at Duayah Nkwanta in the Tano North Municipality of the Brong Region, has presented items worth about GHc9,000.00  to inmates of the Sunyani Female Prisons.

The donation of toiletries, biscuits, bags of rice, detergents, sanitary pads, used clothing, cooking oil and sugar, formed part of the school’s annual act of giving to the less privileged in the society.

Mrs. Doris Cobbinah, the headmistress of the school, who made the presentation in a Citi News Interview commended management, students and various groups and associations for the kind gesture.

According to her, the school has been donating and putting smiles on the faces of the less privilege for the past six years.

“For the past six years, what we do is to give donations to the less privileged before our final year students sit to write exams. We donate to the orphanages, hospital and prisons, and for the last two years, we have donated to the Sunyani female prison,” she said.

She said funds for the project is raised through voluntary contributions from students, teachers and church offertory, and called on Ghanaians and philanthropists to make donations to the fund to help the needy in society.

The Headmistress said the gesture is part of the training they give to their students to make become responsible citizens after school who give back to society.

“Apart from giving them the intellectual ability to work in future, we also give knowledge and inculcate in them acts that will help society and as an institution we have decided to take them to such institutions before they leave the walls of the school”, she explained.

She appealed to the Ghanaians to contribute their quota to address some challenges in the country as government alone cannot address all the country’s developmental problems.

She however appealed to the inmates to concentrate on their reformation process by learning a trade or skill to cater for their upkeep after serving their sentence in prison and ensure their smooth integration in society.

Chief Officer Celestine Dugbor, who received the items on behalf of the management of the female prisons, expressed her profound appreciation and gratitude to management and students for the kind gesture, and called on individuals, institutions and philanthropists to emulate the shining examples of the students.

She assured the items would be used for its intended purpose, and called for more support to improve the living standards of inmates.

The Headmistress, Mrs. Doris Cobbinah, was accompanied by the Assistant Headmaster, Accorley Francis, and some students for the donation.

The deplorable nature of sections of the Sunyani-Kumasi road remains a death trap to passengers and drivers who use the highway.

During a visit, the Ghana News Agency sighted some trenches had developed at certain sections along the Abesewa-Nsuta corridor of the highway.

The visit was necessitated by the persistent complaints from commercial drivers and passengers at some bus terminals in Sunyani.

They said the situation has been reported the Brong-Ahafo Regional secretariat of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), but nothing had been done.

As the rains set in, the visit revealed the trenches, close to a bamboo plantation on both sides of the highway, are fast spreading to other portions.

Mr. Chereh Diabour, a passenger told the Ghana News Agency that several fatal accidents have been recorded at that particular section of the road.

Some of the drivers also expressed the fear that, with the onset of the harmattan (dry season), the unexpected could happen, as that area of the road was sharply-curved and narrowed.

Frank Agyamang, a Benz 207 bus driver, appealed to institutions like the Ghana Highway Authority to act swiftly to forestall any accident on that route.

Four final year students at the Sunyani-Tanoso Nursing Training College in the Brong Ahafo Region met their untimely death just after midnight on Sunday after the car they were travelling in crashed into a tree.

According to the Police the driver of the Nissan Primera car with registration number A 486 13, was heading towards Tanoso from Sunyani when the incident occurred.

The Police said the driver lost control of the steering wheel and as a result the car veered off the road and hit a tree.

“As a result of the impact the vehicle somersaulted and entered into a ditch with the four tyres facing upwards,”  Head of the Brong Ahafo Regional MTTD, Superintendent Daniel Oppong Asirifi told Citi News in an interview.

There were reports in the media that the four women were returning from the VGMA nominees jam held in Sunyani on Saturday when the accident occurred, but, the Police were unable to confirm this to Citi News.

Superintendent Asirifi noted that the four women who were aged between 23 and 25 died when they were rushed to the Brong Ahafo Regional Hospital in Sunyani but added that the driver is alive and is currently receiving treatment.

“Around 12:30 today the Police had information that there had been an accident on the Sunyani Abesim road. The Police proceeded to the scene and found a Nissan Primera private car with registration number, A 486-13 having been involved in an accident. We found the car in a resultant position with all the four tyres facing upwards. So with support from those around, we managed to rescue the occupants.”

In the course of being attended to, the four females passed on, leaving the driver who is currently an admission at the regional hospital. Ghana may soon import drinking water from neighbouring countries if illegal mining also known ‘galamsey’ is not checked.

According to the Director for Natural Resources at the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA),  Carl Fiati, if government does not curb illegal mining, Ghana may soon lose all of its water bodies.

“We anticipated this problem long time ago that it’s going to come a time when we continue the way we are going as a country, we are going to destroy all our water bodies and import water for drinking,” Mr. Fiati added.

[contextly_sidebar id=”myrf2lXbUmVtEDHlw9BsOpaxmzfGK0SJ”]The EPA director made the claim on the Citi Breakfast Show on Tuesday following reports of closure of the Abessim water treatment plant in the Brong-Ahafo Region.

The Ghana Water Company has said the plant had to be shut down because of the reduction in water levels in the Tano River caused by illegal mining.

The Kyebi Water Treatment plant was also shut down in August 2016 because the water had been rendered untreatable by galamsey.

The galamsey menace continues to serve as a threat to water bodies, aquatic life and agriculture in the country, however several efforts by government including setting up an inter-ministerial taskforce in the previous administration proved futile.

Mr. Fiati explained that the galamsey problem is a very complex one and government must thus “develop a national will to address it.”

Galamsey

No national will in solving galamsey

“It is not a problem EPA alone can solve. The mandate of the EPA is to co-manage the environment so we do it in partnership with all the other sectors. But when it comes to galamsey, it looks like there is no national will to deal with it. We appear to value the gold more than the water we drink and the land on which we farm and our forest. So we have allowed people to go freely and degrade.”

Mr. Fiati observed that in other countries mining areas are blocked “and people only go in when government opens up an area for mining.”

“In this country people can go anywhere and start mining. I am personally unhappy with the situation, I think government must change its way of doing things—get mines closed…so that mining can be properly regulated. That is what is done elsewhere, nobody jumps anywhere and mine it is illegal so if somebody is doing illegal mining he should be arrested and prosecuted,” he added.

galamsey-women-mining

When asked how the dangerous effects of galamsey could be resolved, Mr. Fiati said the only way is to arrest, prosecute and jail illegal miners to serve as deterrent to others.

“EPA has specific procedures and processes to ensure that our registered mining entities do their mining activities in an environmentally friendly way. So those that are known to us and are registered with us we regulate, but there are several more people who have gone into mining without the requisite permit so as to do the mining the right way and these people are the illegal or galamsey mining. These people are scattered all over. EPA alone cannot deal with these people. This people are armed, EPA is not armed so we’d need the security agencies, the Ministry of Lands and Forestry, minerals commission and other to work together.”

“EPA cannot bypass these processes and procedures and pretend we are regulating galamsey. We have to make people realize that galamsey is illegal and punishable. And the way to do it is to arrest, prosecute an if possible jail those who do galamsey because the effect of galamsey on the population and the future of this country is far reaching, we cannot compromise with it,” he added.

The Brong Ahafo Regional capital, Sunyani and its environs, have been hit by acute water shortage for the past month.

The situation, according to residents, has made life unbearable and difficult compelling most of them to resort to the use of unsafe and unwholesome sources of water for their survival, coupled with its attendant health implications.

[contextly_sidebar id=”Keg3jD4yGGq9ovBcCsnNf95zWvCBCcGN”]The most affected areas are depending on the Abesim water pump to supply water from the Tano River, forcing other residents to resort to water sourced from polluted dams and ponds for domestic purposes.

The situation is gradually crippling commercial activities as Restaurant operators, Hotels, Car washing bays, laundry service providers are in distress. Students are also forced to trek for several miles to fetch water from Ponds and Dams.

The Brong Ahafo Regional Chief Manager of the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL), Engineer Charles Brobbey in an interview with Citi News, explained that the region was experiencing the shortage as a result of inadequate rainfall this year, bad attitude of residents who indiscriminately fell trees, dumping of refuse and farming on river banks, and illegal mining along the tributaries of the Tano River.

He lamented the situation has led to the reduction of the volumes of water produced daily by the company by half, and distribution of water from 1.6million gallons to 800,000 by the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL).

Engineer Charles Brobbey further explained that, the sources of water for treatment and distribution in that part of the region, is from the Tano River which is almost dried up, compelling the Abesim water treatment plant to reduce production.

He dispelled the notion that his outfit run short off chemicals to process and treat water for consumption, saying they haven’t had any breakdown of machines as alleged. He appealed to residents to exercise restraint as the company works to restore permanent water supply to satisfy residents.

The Regional Manager said in the interim, the company was implementing a rationing system in the supply of water until the situation is restored to normalcy, and advised residents to conserve and use water wisely.

A 23-year-old self-employed woman dealing in used ladies shoes from Berekum in the Berekum Municipality of the Brong Ahafo Region, Sakina Mustapha, is in the grips of the Police for attempting to smuggle a substance suspected to be cocaine to an inmate at the Sunyani Prisons.

Speaking to Citi News, the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Prisons, ASP. Johann Nii Narh Nartey, said the suspect believed to be a member of a notorious drug syndicate terrorizing residents in the area, was arrested on Monday at the Sunyani Central Prison with the substance.

He explained that Sakina was apprehended at the Sunyani Prison Barracks after she paid a visit to a prisoner in custody, Taufik Mohammed, who is serving a ten (10) year jail term with hard labour for narcotic drug offences.

He added that the initial demeanour of both convict and visitor appeared normal at the initial stages of the visit, but the interaction aroused suspicion at the latter stage and so both of them were put under strict surveillance.

ASP Nartey continued that, Sakina was later seen hanging around at the barracks in anxiety after the visit, and was subsequently invited into the prison where a search was conducted on her, and Ninety nine (99) pieces of substances suspected to be cocaine wrapped in cigarette foil were found in her purse.

“Upon interrogation, she disclosed that the parcel was given to her by a friend of the prisoner whom she claimed she did not know previously, and who had earlier on called her on phone upon request from the convict to meet her at an arranged location to collect a parcel meant for the inmate. She also stated that, she has no previous knowledge of the content of the parcel she was carrying” ASP. Johann Nii Narh Nartey.

According to him, when she was pressed further to disclose how the parcel was going to be delivered to the prisoner, Sakina said that an intermediary, who would ensure that the items get to the inmate safely in the prison would meet her at the prisons barracks to take delivery of the “goods”.

She however declined to mention the names of the intermediary as well as the supposed source of the parcel and the caller claiming that she does not know them.

The PRO disclosed the mobile number on which she communicated with her accomplices has however gone dead, and could not be reached when called several times.

He has however assured the issue will be investigated to its logical conclusion as the suspect has since been handed over to the Sunyani Divisional Police for further investigations.

The Regional Police Public Relations Officer (PRO), Supt. Sampson Bandin confirmed the arrest and stated that his outfit has commenced investigation into the matter, and the suspect will be put before court soon.

Hundreds of customers of DKM Microfinance have converged on the Sunyani Coronation Park in the Brong Ahafo region for the first creditors meeting with the Official Liquidator for the liquidation process.

Today [Tuesday]’s meeting is the first of three to be conducted across the country by the close of the week.

About 70,000 customers have so far been validated by the Registrar General’s Department (Official Liquidator) and are expected to receive their locked up cash from next month.

The Acting Registrar General, Jemima Oware explained to Citi Business News the meetings will outline to the creditors the modalities for the repayment of their investments.

“We will be informing them on schedules in relation to when and how much and how many people will be paid so we urge all the creditors to be present,” she said.

Earlier, some of the concerned customers raised their dissatisfaction at what they said was the lack of official correspondence from the Official Liquidator.

But Jemima Oware responded as, “We have published the information in the national news papers… there are about 63,000 to 70,000 creditors; as such we cannot be able to call them up individually. So once we are aware that the media has been able to get wind of the information, we consider it circulated. And we equally expect them to inform other creditors.”

DKM’s operations were suspended by the Bank of Ghana in 2015 after the central bank cited the company for failing to comply with laid down rules on operations in the financial industry.
