The Municipal Chief Executive for Suhum, Madam Margaret Darko, has condemned the group embarking on a six-day walk urging government to rescind its decision to mine bauxite in the Atewa forest and advocating for the protection of the reserve.

The group, calling itself the Concerned Citizens of Atewa Landscape, began its walk on Sunday to urge the government to revise its decision.

[contextly_sidebar id=”K7ThDForBed2KfAh6qFRDJbTqxAZ1FdQ”]The group walked from Apedwa to Suhum on Tuesday and paid a courtesy call on the Suhum chief Osabarima Ayeh Kofi, who warmly welcomed them and received their petition.

However, the outspoken Municipal Chief Executive, who refused to receive the group’s petition when they went to her office, accused the organizers of conniving with certain individuals in a bid to undermine President Akufo-Addo’s government.

She stated that these individuals had not protested when the operations of illegal miners were destroying water bodies, suggesting that their response to the government’s plans was hypocritical.

“About 15 years ago when the small-scale miners were destroying farmlands and water bodies where was this group called concerned citizens? But now that President Nana Addo wants to provide jobs for youth suddenly this group comes out protesting. Nana Addo will not just rise up and say he is coming to destroy water bodies, I know feasibility studies have been conducted already and the site has been visited so I think it would have been wise for some leaders of your group to approach the Presidency or Chief of Staff on a one-on-one level and discussed this rather than demonstrating on the roads,” she told the group’s leaders.

She continued, “this act of yours is very bad. You are showing and sending bad signals that people in the President’s hometown have risen against his decision to mine bauxite at Atewa but I know certain individuals have put you guys up to this to take the president on. Am really not happy about this thing you are doing and I do not support your walk.”

Margaret Darko, outraged by the group’s protest, advised them to rather embrace government’s decision to mine bauxite in the Atewa forest to help provide jobs for youth in the area.

“The government is not at war with the citizens. If a government comes to power and promises residents of the provision of jobs I believe it is a good thing that needs backing from all of you because the unemployed youths will all be employed. The issue of unemployment has become a burden for us all as we always think about it and make daily deliberations on it. When people come to influence you to do such things ask yourselves, what you guys will achieve in the future and the implications of it. I must say you cannot force me to take your petition but I am offering you a piece of advice, next time think about the implications of your acts.”

The leadership of the group were however dumbfounded by the utterances of the Municipal Chief Executive but went on to plead with her to accept and consider the petition.

The convenor of the group, Mr Daryl Bosu assured her that their actions were not politically or individually motivated but are solely to protect the source water for the over 5 million Ghanaians who directly benefit from water from the river Densu, Ayensu and Birim which take their source from the Atewa forest.

Some staff of the Eastern Regional branch of the Ghana Tourism Authority, were chased away by alleged sex workers of a brothel at Kotokoli Zongo in the Suhum Municipality, after they tried to gain access to the structure.

The officers from the Authority, who had gone to the makeshift structure in a bid to ascertain whether the facility was being used as a brothel as had been alleged before closing it down, took to their heels when the irate women realized their intentions.

According to sources close to the facility, the brothel operates 24 hours daily and is reportedly a hotspot for some  Senior High School boys who skip classes and pay as little as GHC 5.00 to patronize the services of the sex workers.

The alleged prostitutes, numbering 6, hurled insults at the officials from the Authority and shrieked at them when they tried to enter the structure.

A 36-year-old woman, believed to be one of their leaders, followed the officials from the brothel to the main Suhum-Koforidua road hurling abusive words at them and shouting “it’s my private parts, not yours. I have a right to my body and I choose what I want to do with my body. What is your problem if I choose to engage in prostitution.”

In an interview with Citi News, the Eastern Regional Manager of the Ghana Tourism Authority, Mr Frederick Adjei Rudolph, indicated that he has referred the matter to the Eastern Regional Security Council (REGSEC).

“The hostility that we were greeted with at the place did not even allow us to carry out our business. They revealed and confirmed they engage in prostitution which is illegal in this country, the place is a makeshift structure which makes it difficult for us to shut down because they are not operating as a hotel but rather they rented it from a landlord”.

“I have written a formal letter to the Eastern Regional Minister Eric Kwakye Darfour who is the head of REGSEC. The Eastern Regional Police Commander has also been served with a letter, same as the Municipal Chief Executive of Suhum. Now we will heavily rely on the police in the region to take the necessary steps and take immediate action to cause their arrest for operating illegally and in prostitution.”

The Chief of Suhum, Osabarima Ayeh Kofi, when contacted by Citi News at his palace stated that the operations of the brothel have not been brought to his attention.

“I must say I am not aware of any acts of prostitution in any part of Suhum. If something of that sort exists then it has not come to my attention, but I will call on my elders to follow up on it and help the police do their job”.

The two, Kwame Asare 24, alias ‘Boys Abr3’ and Kofi Yakubu, 23, who had been on Police wanted list for sometime, were arrested at Suhum.

According to the Eastern Regional Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Ebenezer Tetteh, the two belong to a car snatching syndicate that has been masterminding the recent wave of robberies and carjacking activities in the region.

“Suspect Kwame Asare led police to Amenase and Asuboi near Suhum for the arrest of one other accomplice by name Sammy alias Oscar, but he was absent. Suspect Eric Twumasi, 19 years, Emmanuel Tengey 16 years and Ansong Tawiah 15 years, were found in the room of suspect Sammy and when a search was conducted in the room, a stethoscope and one sphygmomanometer were retrieved. Police proceeded and conducted a search in the room of Kwame Asare but found nothing incriminating”.

ASP Ebenezer Tetteh advised the general public to help the law enforcement agencies with credible and timely information to enable them clamp down on criminals.

“I will therefore use this medium to plead with residents to report to the police strange movements and activities of people we live with in our neighbourhoods, because for all you know, they may be part of a robbery group. The police thrives on information from you the general public to work so help us with the necessary and vital information so we ensure sanity in the region,” he said.

The Eastern Regional Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Ebenezer Tetteh, who confirmed the incident and subsequent arrests to Citi News, said one of the suspects, Owusu William, had sustained gunshot wounds.

“The police had information that there was a robbery going on at Omenako close to Suhum so the patrol team quickly moved to the crime scene, and upon reaching there they met the suspected robbers who exchange gunfire with the police,” he narrated.

“In the process two of the suspects were arrested, one Owusu William was hit and sustained gunshot wounds, another suspect, Emmanuel Yeboah a driver was also apprehended and as I speak Owusu is on guard at the Suhum Hospital receiving treatment and Yeboah is in police custody helping with investigations”.

ASP Ebenezer Tetteh also disclosed that the Regional Police Command has begun a manhunt for the other suspects who managed to escape.

“The other suspects however escaped and we are on a manhunt for them. We are using this opportunity to give out information to the general public especially landowners, hospitals and herbal centres within and around Suhum and adjoining areas to quickly report to the police or inform us if anybody comes to them with complaints of injuries because we believe that the suspects who escaped might have sustained some form of injuries as a result of the gun battle with the police”.

“The vehicles which were being used by the armed robbers in their operation have been impounded at the police station to assist us with investigations,” ASP Tetteh added.

Proceedings at the Suhum Circuit Court came to a halt on Thursday, when families of two persons allegedly killed by a fetish priest/herbalist at Addo-Nkwanta, near Suhum, protested the bail granted to the accused, Solomon Adjorlolo.

Wailing, chanting and hurling of insults characterized the protest, which attracted a large crowd including family members of the deceased persons, and people from the affected community to the court premises. It took the police some time to bring the accused persons out of the Court premises.

The Court presided over by Ms Audrey Cocuvie-Tay, granted bail to the accused in the sum of GH¢50,000.00 with three sureties to be justified, and is to re-appear on November 16.

Solomon Adjorlolo, pleaded not guilty to all eight counts of charges including killing two persons and running away, injuring another, driving without a license, driving an unregistered vehicle, deceiving a public officer among others.

The facts were that, on October 4, around 9.30pm, the suspect was driving from Koforidua to Suhum, and on reaching a section of the road, he diverted from his lane to the opposite side, and hit three persons who were at the time buying Indomie.

The deceased persons Emmanuel Manteaw, a level 200 student of the University of Education Winneba, and Kwame Asare, a nine-year old class three pupil, died on the spot, whiles Kwasi Awuah, a third person, in a critical condition was rushed to the Suhum Government Hospital where he is receiving treatment.

According to the prosecution, Solomon Adjololo, fled the scene and tried to deceive the police by presenting another person to feign as if that person was driving the vehicle at the time of the incident, but was found out upon police interrogation.

Five days later, Solomon Adjorlolo was arrested and was subsequently arraigned at the Suhum Circuit Court.

The Police in the Eastern Region have described as unfounded the accusations of bias against it by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the region.

The NPP in the area are upset with the perceived failure of the police to arrest some suspected National Democratic Congress thugs who attacked EC offices and destroyed equipment during the voter transfer exercise.

[contextly_sidebar id=”bLgCrDAL4IKgMV82X1NoHaj2CSajB4LL”]This also led to the party’s executives in the Suhum constituency on Wednesday threatening to retaliate to any attacks against them from the NDC.

The thugs were said to have initiated the attack following an EC officer’s resolve not to transfer the vote of some of the voters, who could not identify themselves as required by the process.

In a Citi News interview, the Public Relations Officer of the Eastern Regional Police Command, ASP Yaw Nketsiah Yeboah, assured that the police will deal with trouble makers though he decried the lack of communication that had allowed the tensions in the area to escalate.

“At times, miscommunication and lack of communication can create suspicion and perceptions and assumptions which are unfounded,” he said.

ASP Yeboah believes the situation would have been clearer if the aggrieved party had approached the Regional Command or Electoral Security Taskforce for an explanation.

In his view, ” boycotting anybody or taking the laws into one’s own hands will not solve the problem. It will rather exacerbate the whole situation.”

ASP Yeboah added that, “if something happens and you don’t look at me the police officer as a friend but you make my work difficult from groundless allegations, then the law will be applied.”

They say nice guys finish last and—for most of us—that’s probably true, considering the not-so-nice ones we’ll often date before meeting Mr. Right.

In retrospect, most of us are able to understand that these guys weren’t right for us, but getting to that place probably wasn’t easy. It’s because of that we decided to put together a primer to help other women gauge whether the guys they’re dating right now are good ones, or totally not.

Read on, dear friends, for 10 signs your boyfriend is an unequivocal jerk. And check out Millionaire Matchmaker Patti Stanger’s advice on how to weed out losers in the video above.

1. He looks at his phone more than he looks at you.

Obviously we live in an overly-connected world, and most of us are pretty much attached to our devices 24/7. However, obsessively checking his phone every minute he’s with you isn’t just annoying—it’s downright rude.

It’s essentially saying that your company isn’t his first priority, texting is (or checking scores, scrolling Twitter, or playing Candy Crush.) Instagram can wait. No, it can’t? Then he’s probably not ready to have a relationship with an actual human just yet.

2. He talks about how hot other women are.

Sorry, we don’t care how “cool” you are with stuff like this—if your man is constantly making remarks about other women’s looks in front of you, he’s a jerk.  These might include “she’s so hot” when you’re explaining how Sansa escapes from King’s Landing on “Game of Thrones,” how much hotter his friend’s new girlfriend is than his old one, or simply commenting on random women’s looks/bodies/racks.

3. He blatantly checks them out.

Guess what? He’s still a jerk if he uses overt non-verbal actions to gawk at women. Look, it’s human nature that we like to look at pretty things—you’d look at a gorgeous guy walking by, too—but outwardly gaping, drooling, head-turning, commenting, or abrupt conversation-stopping isn’t acceptable, it’s insulting. Dude needs to learn some discretion, and fast. If he can’t, it’s time for him to go.

4. He only reaches out after he’s been partying.

This is a big one, ladies. If you’re okay with having a relationship with a guy who only wants to see you when he’s tipsy at 2 a.m., who are we to judge? For all we know, you might have some guys on the side you late-night call, too. But if you’re looking for something more—a daylight outing, for example—and you’re not getting it, he’s a jerk.

5. He never wants to hang out with you and his friends together.

That’s just weird. If you’re dating someone, it’s a given that you do certain things together, like socializing. If he constantly seems to be avoiding his pals when he’s with you, it’s time to ask him why.
