Asante Kotoko have dismissed head coach Steve Polack following the club’s exit from the CAF Confederations Cup at the hands of CARA Club of Congo Brazzaville on Wednesday.

Kotoko appointed Polack in May 2017 and he led them to win the 2017 MTN FA Cup after they beat Hearts of Oak 3-1 in Tamale. The feat qualified them to the CAF Confederation Cup.

The club made the announcement on Friday in a statement signed by its communications director, Obed Acheampong.

It appears the club’s exit from the Confederation Cup sealed Polack’s fate. In the first leg 1-0 victory, Kotoko missed three penalties and missed another three in the penalty shootout in the second leg leading to the loss and exit.

Kotoko will face WAFA in the opening week of the 2018 Ghana Premier League season on March 4.

Head coach of Kumasi Asante Kotoko, Steve Polack, has said the club has yet to re-open contract renewal talks with him as he enters the final days of his 6-month contract.

The English man replaced Croatian trainer Zdravko Logarusic in May, and has steered the club to president’s cup glory, a 4th place finish in the league, and the final of the FA Cup to be played this month.

The former King Faisal and Berekum Chelsea trainer was handed a short-term contract until the end of the 2016/2017 Ghana premier league season.

Asked to clarify his contract situation at the club, Polack confirmed the FA Cup final against Hearts of Oak in Tamale would be his last game as a Kotoko coach, as the club is yet to speak to him about an extension.

“My contract is till the end of the season. I’ve heard rumours that they want me to stay, but at the moment there’s been no negotiation so the ball is in their court.
“The FA Cup final will be my last game,” he said.

Kotoko face Accra Hearts of Oak on October 29 in the FA Cup final in Tamale.

Despite getting a first home win in five league matches, Asante Kotoko head coach, Steve Polack, was not fully satisfied with his team.

Kotoko beat Wa All Stars 2-1 in Week 19 of the Ghana Premier League to go fourth on the league log thanks to goals from Obed Owusu and Yakubu Mohammed.

However, Polack was not too happy with what he saw and has asked the players to improve on certain aspects of their game.

“I am happy we got the three points but I was not happy with the goal we gave away. It came from our mistakes. In addition, we need to be more lethal. We created our own chances in both halves but we could not score them. We need to be more lethal. I can understand the fans if they are not happy but we got the result.”

Kotoko play Dwarfs, Medeama, Inter Allies, Hearts and WAFA in their next five league matches.

Former Minister for Youth and Sports, Elvis Afriyie Ankrah has described as “most unfortunate” the announcement by his deputy, Joseph Yammin, of government’s decision to airlift $3M cash to Brazil to pay the appearance fee of the Blacks Stars.

Government flew the amount to Brazil after what was described as player agitation and a boycott of training session ahead of the final match against Portugal.

The agitation led to the personal intervention of President John Dramani Mahama in assuring the team the monies were going to be paid ahead of Ghana’s decisive Group G game against Portugal.

On Tuesday 24th June, Mr. Joseph Yammin on Citi FM’s EyeWitness News announced that government was airlifting $3M cash to Brazil for the payment of the appearance fees of the players. [Click here for full story]

Responding to questions on the announcement of the decision to fly $3M cash to Brazil on a special edition of Metro TV’s Good Evening Ghana programme, Mr. Ankrah said, “that was very unfortunate.”

According to him the pressure from the players and Ghanaians on the delay in payment of the appearance fees caused Mr. Yammin to make the announcement.

“I don’t think that my deputy wanted to create chaos… All of us are humans and sometimes we crumble to pressure and the media is relentless and persistent. I think that out of that pressure he blurted it out.” he added.

The decision to airlift the money to the team gained global popularity among leading news brands in the world. The arrival of the amount was captured live on Brazilian television channel, Globo and there were even images of some of the Black Stars’ players holding their share of the appearance fees after collecting them.

Match: NETHERLANDS v GHANA

Date: May 31, 2014

Time: 19:00 GMT

After pitching camp in the Netherlands for almost a week now, all is set for the Black Stars to test their might against the Netherlands before jetting off to Miami for the next phase of their World Cup preparations.

Saturday’s game will be the second time both sides face off after a 2010 encounter saw the Black Stars suffering a humiliating 4-1 defeat at the hands of their Dutch counterparts.

Goals in that game were scored by Dirk Kuyt, Rafael van der Vaart, Robin van Persie, and Wesley Sneijder.

Dutch coach Louis van Gaal will field his first choice XI for the World Cup and in the new 5-3-2 system he has implemented in recent weeks.

“Before the match, I will announce my 23 man squad,” the coach told reporters. “On Monday I have to give my list to Fifa, but I will make my decision earlier. Against Ghana our starting XI during the World Cup will play.”

However, in recent times, the Netherlands have been a pale shadow of themselves after failing to secure a single win in their last four (4) games.

Their recent disappointment came in a recent friendly against Ecuador when they had to rely on a late first half Robben Van Persie stunner to beat Ecuador at the Amsterdam Arena.

Louis van Gaal will be without the services of veteran attacking midfielder, Rafael Van Der Vaart  and Right back, Daryl Janmaat  after they all suffered injuries while training this week.

Galatasaray’s Wesley Sneijder and Bayern Munich’s Arjen Robben are all expected to make a comeback into the Dutch starting line-up after both players missed their last friendly against Ecuador.

The Black Stars on the other hand will be with a full house after Michael Essien, Kevin-Prince Boateng, Adam Larsen  Kwarasey and Sulley Muntari reported to camp this week.

Kwesi Appiah: “The unity is so great and discipline is very high,” he said ahead of Saturday’s match against the Dutch in Rotterdam. “Discipline plays a big role, if you want to be successful, 100 per cent lies with the players’ behaviour and so far it has been good.

“There is this kind of competition, no one is sure of himself at the moment. Everybody is attentive to whatever is taught in training. Everyone tries to do whatever he can and for me, it’s good for the team and I am really impressed.”

Tactics

The Ghana Black Stars are expected to appear in a 4-2-3-1 setup which will see them building-up play in a slow manner and try to catch the Dutch on fast counter break with their swift and trickery wingers.

On the Other hand, the Netherlands will line-up in an adventurous 5-3-2 formation which will allow their wing-backs join attack often and launch crosses to feed both Sneijder and Van Persie with the right balls.

Possible Netherlands line-up: Cillessen, Verhaegh, Blind, Martins-Indi, De Vrij, Vlaar, Clasie, De Jong, Sneijder, Robben, Van Persie

Possible Ghana line-up: Kwarasey, Opare, Afful, Akaminko, Boye, Essien, Muntari, Asamoah, Ayew, Boateng, Gyan
