The Senior Staff Association of the Volta River Authority wants the government to provide full details of the debt situation at the Authority to the public.

This they said would help the public understand that given the push, VRA can manage its own thermal assets.

[contextly_sidebar id=”VeDjO8dY1MxrjDV8xxrSWY4smPEcBtQC”]“The government is saying VRA operation is a debt on Ghanaians but can we break down the debt so Ghanaians can appreciate where he is coming from. I think that will be a fair argument,” the General Secretary of the Western Operating Area of the VRA senior staff, Charles Owusu Sekyere said.

Government is in search of a transaction advisor to sell the Authority’s thermal assets in a bid to make it more profitable.

Mr. Owusu Sekyere, however believes the VRA can do better than any other independent power producer in the thermal sector.

“I think that per the PURC tariff that they have given us, VRA can operate and it will be cheaper than almost all the independent power producers in the country.”

The employees had earlier stated that the advert came as a surprise to all the staff of the VRA.

“We were not consulted. We were not engaged in any way so we have no input in what the government is trying to do,” Cephas Duse, the Chairman of the Senior Staff Association of VRA stated.

They also indicated that the sale of thermal plants defies mordern business logic and cannot address the challenges of the power producer.

The Chairman of the Senior Staff of VRA, Cephas Duse had said the current challenges faced by the state power producer is a result of bad deals with independent power producers, which were allowed by successive governments.

The Head of the Occupational Health and Safety Department of the Koforidua Regional Hospital,  Akofa Adika-Bensah, has called on managers of business entities and labour unions to institute annual medical examination policies for workers.

She said such a policy would help to protect the lives of workers against sudden deaths and help their organisations to maintain a healthy staff.

Mrs Adika-Bensah said this in an interview at Koforidua.

She said the Koforidua Regional Hospital has a compulsory annual medical examination policy for all its 1200 staff.

She said the medical examination covers all standard examinations including cervical and breast cancer for women and prostate cancer for men and those with challenges are referred to specialised institutions and the hospital bears the cost.

Mrs Adika-Bensah said members of staff who do not want to be examined are expected by the policy of the hospital to give a written explanation of why they would not like to submit themselves for the medical examination.

She said the policy has helped the hospital to reduce requests for health-related excuse duties and motivated the staff to do their best.

Mrs Adika-Bensah said the hospital is ready to offer the same service to individuals, labour unions and institutions providing employment in the region to ensure that the country have a healthy work force.

Some staff of the National Labour Commission (NLC) this [Thursday] morning, locked up the premises of the Commission, demanding the immediate removal of the Executive Secretary, Charles Adongo Bawaduah.

Mr. Adongo Bawaduah contested parliamentary primaries in the Bongo Constituency on the ticket of the National Democratic Congress (NDC); an action they say is against the public service act.

The workers, clad in red, are also against the dismissal of two of their colleagues and demanded their immediate reinstatement.

Speaking to Citi News, the Senior Industrial Relations Officer at the Commission, Eric Omane Yeboah, said Mr. Bawaduah among other things caused the transfers and postings of staff without due process.

“This man who claims he is a public servant is the very individual who contested the NDC primaries and lost at Bongo constituency. Public servants are non-partisan therefore once his government loses power, he has no business running the affairs of National Labour Commission, that is all. The workers have locked the doors in solidarity with their employees who have been sacked, and they want their colleagues to be reinstated, and make sure that the conditions of service are improved for the general welfare of employees of the National Labour Commission.”

“Strangely enough, the National Labour Commission does not have a forum to deal with this case…And so I believe that with this communication the authorities will hear, and we are willing to sit down to make sure our grievances are resolved.”
