St. Peter’s Senior High school marked 60 years of its existence on Saturday with a homecoming and speech and prize giving ceremony.

The school, which was established in February 1957 by the Catholic mission with just 15 students and 4 teachers, has risen to be among the best schools in the country, with a student population of 1,443, and 76 teaching and non-teaching staff.

St Peter’s Senior High school is well known for its numerous successes chalked in the National Science and Maths Quiz, nurturing the finest surgeons, professors, engineers and politicians in the persons of, majority leader Osei Kyei Mensah-Bonsu, Hon. Kwaku Kwarteng the Deputy Minister of Finance, Dr. Archibald Letsa, Volta Regional Minister, Seth Acheampong Mpraeso MP, Dr. Nsiah-Asare the Director General of Ghana Health Service among others.

In a speech read on behalf of the minister of education, Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh, he warned teachers against negative practices such as absenteeism, lateness to class and the use of ineffective teaching methodologies.

According to him, as teachers, they must be responsible for the children’s performance by adopting modern, scientific, innovative and 21st-century practice of teaching to set a high professional standard.

Addressing the theme” 60 years of quality Catholic education, achievements, prospects and the way forward” the minister advised all teachers to be inspired to greater heights in their professional endeavours, by striving hard to continually update their knowledge through approved routes in the educational system.

Dr. Opoku Prempeh while admonishing teachers to be professional, also advised students to desist from examination malpractices, drug use, stealing, bullying, truancy, drunkenness, absenteeism without permission, persistent lateness to class, rudeness and disrespect towards teachers and school authorities.

He said the free SHS to be implemented by the NPP government, will yield no results for any school that allows indiscipline.

He said government’s desire to hand over mission schools is one of the attempts to promote and instil discipline in the youth and the country at large.

Dr. Opoku Prempeh also appealed to parents and guardians to complement the efforts of teachers and school authorities by giving adequate attention to the social, emotional, spiritual and physical needs of their children.

The special guest at the event, the vice-chancellor of the University of Ghana, Professor Ebenezer Owusu, who also happens to be an old student of the school, challenged the students to strive to reach greater heights.

“Persco gives you the avenue to become whoever you want to be in the future, it is up to you to pick up the challenge to learn continuously with dignity and respect authority.”

Matthias Kydiabor, the headmaster of the school  complained about congestion in their dormitories as some of the challenges, which he said breeds bedbugs in the school.

He added that, the school does not have an assembly hall and for that matter, social functions are held in either the dining hall or in the open.

The headmaster, who commended the old boys (PERSCOBA) for their numerous efforts towards improving infrastructure in the school, also appealed to government to come to the aid of the school.

In spite of the infrastructural deficit, he revealed that the school always records a 100 percent pass in West African School Certificate Examinations (WASSCE), since ts inception, whiles several candidates of the school won the best candidates awards at the national and international level.

The president of the old boys association, Anim Richard, called on all old students of the school to come back and support the school.

“From the inception of the National science and Maths Quiz, our school has won the ultimate position two times and was the first and second runner –ups on a number of occasions, but we are not comfortable with it we want to do more, every Perscoba should as a matter of urgency look at the school. Those in and outside the country should all contribute their quota for us to support and develop the school which made us responsible men.”
