Some health facilities constructed in the South Dayi District in the Volta Region have not been operational, many years after they were completed.

According to the Member of Parliament for the area, Rockson Dafeamekpor, who spoke on the Citi Breakfast Show, they have about seven CHPS compounds, but about five of them are not operational due to lack of electricity and water.

“Within the past six years, we constructed about 7 of them. The difficulty is that, when these compounds are completed you need to extend electricity and water, but the cost of extending these utility services are not factored in the actual construction, and that is the challenge.”

“Now we are being levied a huge cost to extend electricity and water, and because of the inadequacy of funding from the Assembly, this is the challenge for the Assembly and we are making efforts to operationalize the facility at both Kpeve and Pekiwudome,” he added.

Abandoned health facilities

This comes on the back of Citi News’ consistent report on some completed but abandoned health projects scattered across the country.

They include abandoned CHPS compound at Ofankor, Tetegu, Teshie all in  Accra.

Other major ones that have been reported by Citi FM are the $217 million University of Ghana Medical Centre, the Bank of  Ghana Hospital and the solar-powered medical centre at the Volo Digital Village in the Volta Region.

The South Dayi District Chief Executive appointee, Ella Boateng, has described as falsehood claims by some New Patriotic Party (NPP) supporters in the district that she is not a member of the party.

According to her, she does not see any reason why her appointment should cause agitation among some party members.

Some party members at a press conference on Thursday, said they suspect that due process was not followed in her appointment, alleging that since she is not loyal to the party.

According to them, the appointee had earlier campaigned openly for the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) Parliamentary Candidate, who’s now the MP, ahead of the 2016 general elections.

“Here is someone who has been known as an executive member of the opposition NDC, a voted women organizer at some point and bears no records in the NPP local domain. She had never been recorded or seen in any executive or general meetings; neither was she a defector of any sort or acted in any measure or sense for the course of our party. Our opponents from the NDC are currently jubilating at her residence with the point that their prayer has been answered because their own has been chosen finally even though they are opposition,” they said in their statement.

But reacting to the development on Eyewitness News on Thursday, the appointee, Ella Boateng, said she is a card-bearing member of the governing party who went through a vigrous vetting process and passed.

“I registered with the party as far back as 2007. I have my manual card, paid dues for 4 years and when they went biometric, I quickly registered my biometric. I went through the vetting process from the constituency level right to the national level… I brought all my cards out before the national vetting committee chairman it was after all this process that I was nominated so majority of the issues raised are all lies against me,” she said.

She stressed that she had served the party for many years, and was very vocal in its campaign in the run up to the December 2016 election.

On accusations of associating and campaigning for the NDC Member of Parliament, Rockson Dafeamekpor, she said although she had a personal relationship with him, she did not contribute to his election victory.

Meanwhile, the Member of Parliament for the area, Rockson Dafeamekpor, has confirmed that the appointee did not campaign for him ahead of the elections.

According to him, although the appointee had engaged his services as a lawyer and they both had a good working relationship, she did not support his campaign.

The Progressive People’s Party (PPP) supporters in South Dayi with their Parliamentary Candidate, Felix Lartey, are alleged to have attacked students of the Kpeve Senior High school during a campaign march.

According to Citi News’ King Nobert Akpablie, the Assistant headmaster of the school, Mike Adjie, said the trouble began when supporters of PPP forced their way into the school premises to campaign.

Mr. Adjie explained that after the PPP supporters forced their way onto the school premises, the school authorities made it clear they had to seek permission because they were disrupting academic work.

“It was around 8: 20 this morning [Friday], I was in the office when I heard noise and the hooting of horns coming towards the school premises so I came out to actually stop them,” he said.

But the PPP supporters refused and insisted that it was a campaign season and hence, the teachers had no right to prevent them from entering their premises

The Assistant Head narrated further that, “the driver came out saying he doesn’t understand why they [the teachers] should block him and there was a scuffle so his clothes and everything were torn.”

“The students in the classroom saw this thing and they all rushed and the teachers were also preventing them from not doing anything but the PPP supporters actual attacked some of the students to the extent the those who were not on the campus started throwing stones at the students.”

Mr. Adjie noted that some of the student sustained injuries from the attack and have been taken to the clinic.

PPP denies instigating disturbances

However, Mr. Lartey, the Parliamentary Candidate, rather blamed the teachers for the disturbances. According to him, the teachers instructed the students to throw stones at his supporters because they claimed they were disrupting academic activities.

He explained that the PPP was launching its campaign in the district and that his convoy got to a point where it could only make a turn at the Kpeve High School.

But students singing “NDC all the way” charged on the PPP supporters on the orders of the teachers, according to the parliamentary candidate.

Mr. Lartey said, “there is only one place that the convoy can go and make a U-turn – Kpeve Senior high school junction and what happened was that when the first car got there and they heard the noise, one of the teachers go out instructed the students to block the way so that cars cannot turn at that place.”

“But unfortunately, the students also started stoning the crowd and as it happened, they [the PPP supporters] also returned the stones so quickly I had to come in and get them back to the car so we continue our convoy.”

“We had no intention no campaigning on the campus. We got to the junction. That is where we could only turn our vehicles. None of my people got to the vehicles got to the school premises.” Mr. Lartey said.

Meanwhile, the Police have stated that they are investigating the matter to ascertain the cause of the of the disturbance
