Several houses and other properties running into hundreds of cedis have been destroyed in the Nanumba North district of the Northern Region following a day’s rainfall.

The rains which started at dawn on Monday stopped on Tuesday morning.

It left buildings collapsed and destroyed major roads including the one linking Tamale and Salaga.

The only dam in the district, ‘Wampu’ which serves as the source of water for the Bimbilla town overflowed its banks and completely washed off a nearby road.

Some residents whose properties have been destroyed called on the government to come to their aid.

“We have never seen this kind of rain for years in Nanung. Our houses are submerged and several have been destroyed. Right now we have no place to sleep, we don’t even know where to go. We are calling on the government, the district assembly and philanthropists to come to our aid,” one of the residents said.

“We are in trouble, our only source of water ‘wampu’ is going. The dam is heavily silted, now it has crossed the road and if care is not taken the whole dam will be washed off and we will be in trouble when we get into the dry season.”

The story was no different in the Nanumba South district. The two major roads from Bimbilla have both been cut off and road users can not travel to either Yendi or Tamale.

Speaking to Citi News, he said the situation is very devastating, and thus called on the authority to come and assist the victims. He was however worried about the financial situation of the district.

“We are appealing to central government and other civil society organisations to come to the aid of the victims. The district as it stands now, because of our security situation, we do not have money in our coffers.”

School children would have to stay out of school until the roofs of their school buildings are fixed.

An Assembly Member in one of the electoral areas lamented to Citi News how the rains caused a lot of destruction to properties affecting many people in the area.

He therefore called on the authorities to as a matter of urgency come to the aid of the people.

“People slept outside in the rain throughout the night, and early this morning [Saturday], more rain came to worsen the situation because by that time, the people had not been able to clear the area and more property was destroyed again. We are making a passionate appeal to the authorities to come to our aid. NADMO and other philanthropists should also come to assist in the situation.”

A rainstorm is expected to hit the entire country on Thursday evening, a Senior Meteorologist at the Ghana Meteorological Agency, Michael Padi, has said.

According to Mr  Padi, by weather indicators, the storm was expected at about 1900 hours.

He urged the public to take all the necessary precautions to ensure, that no unpleasant incidents occur during the storm.

Mr Padi reminded the public on the need to avoid seeking shelter from underneath trees during such periods.

“Thundery activities easily get attracted to structures such as trees, and the risk of lightening is very high within tree shades,” he said.

Mr Padi said weak structures should be avoided in the search of shelter since they were easily blown down by strong winds.

The senior meteorologist urged motorist to be extra cautious during the period.

The house sat on Tuesday night to consider a bill brought before it under a certificate of urgency, to amend the Local Government Bill.

‘Parliament renovated’

The Chamber of Parliament was renovated in 2014 after MPs complained of congestion, resulting from an increase of parliamentary seats from to 230 to 275.

The house while on recess between July and October 2014, underwent infrastructural adjustment to ease congestion and change worn-out materials.

At the reconvening of the house in November 2014, the central air conditioning system of the Parliament had been changed with new chandeliers fixed.

Modern communication gadgets were also fixed to the table for each parliamentarian, with old furniture replaced with imported Chinese chairs that were subsequently replaced after agitation from some Members of Parliament.
