About two hundred angry youth from Ejura in the Ashanti Region on Thursday besieged the Ejura-Sekyedumase District Police station and attacked police personnel on duty.

Their action was to demand that a driver who knocked dead two female students in an accident and his vehicle be released to them.

The deceased persons, students of the Ejura Islamic Senior High School, Iddrisu Maridiya and Shaibu Farisa, both 19 years, died on arrival at the Ejura Government Hospital.

The youth, who were wielding cutlasses, pelted stones at the police officers on duty, forcing them to flee to safety.

The youth as a result, vandalized items at the charge office among other disruptions.

The District Police Commander, Chief Superintendent Richarson Kumeko, who spoke to Citi News said the Police is yet to make arrests.

“They said they don’t understand why the accident car has been sent to our division [Mampong] so they wanted the car back to Ejura.  The case is not my personal property…. so if they doubt, they can go to the divisional commander and he will show them the car and the suspect over there,” he said.

‘They besiege the Police station all the time’

Chief Superintendent Richarson Kumeko lamented that the youth consistently besiege the Police station over various issues, making the place unsafe.

He said officers who served there were at risk of attacks from the youth especially because they were constrained with personnel.

“All the time, they besiege the police station and the station is now exposed to risks so we are also human beings, we have to be cautious. We are constrained with manpower and we also have families at the barracks so when you come and attack us, we have to protect our families and ourselves,” he added.

The Half-Assini Police Station in the Western Region, has reopened barely 24 hours after being closed down due to a mob attack.

An irritated mob from Ekpu near Half-Assini, allegedly led by their Assemblyman, Mr Peter Miezah Angate, on Wednesday morning besieged the Station in demand for one Assuah Boah, who was in custody.

There was news that Boah had been beaten to death, whilst in custody, and the body placed in a morgue.

The mob smashed windows, damaged the Counter, vital documents and the Official vehicle at the Station.

The timely intervention of the Jomoro Member of Parliament, Mr Paul Essien, and personnel from Jaway Wharf detachment of the Ghana Navy near Half-Assini, saved the Station.

No arrest has so far been made and no casualty reported from the incident.

A visit to the Station around 16:00 hours on Thursday, saw Policemen on duty.

A mob from Ekpu near Half-Assini in the Western Region on Wednesday morning vandalised the Half-Assini Police Station after hearing the news of the death of a suspect in police custody.

The cause of death is yet to be verified.

The mob smashed the official vehicle, windows and the counter at the Police Station to back their demand.

But for the timely intervention of the MP for the area, Paul Essien the situation would have worsened.

Over a hundred people including women, clad in red attire, arm and head bands led by the Assemblyman, Mr Peter Miezah Angate, arrived at the station about 10am.

Speaking to the media, Mr Angate said the deceased was arrested about 5am on Sunday for stealing.

Mr Angate said one Boah Benie, also from Ekpu, bought an attire believed to have been stolen and that case is under investigation by the Half Assini police.

He said Benie gave the said attire to her boyfriend at Half-Assini who after adorning the attire was confronted by the complainant in the case resulting in his arrest.

The Assemblyman said the deceased’s mother and one Teacher, Ekenealah’s request to bail the deceased was declined.

He said the mother brought the deceased food at 6pm on Monday and found him handcuffed to a bench at the Police Station.

Mr Angate said the next day the Police asked some relatives who went to visit him in the cells to wait and in the process they saw the Police taking away someone covered with cloth.

He said a fellow suspect informed them that it was their relative who had died was being taken away by the Police so they followed the Police to the Half-Assini Government Hospital morgue where the body was deposited.

He said the Police is yet to inform the family of the death of their family member and cause of the unrest was based on rumours that the deceased was allegedly beaten to death while in police cell.

The Police Command could, however, not be reached for their comments.
