According to them, several pleas to the Ministry have fallen on deaf ears hence the picketing.

Some of the students told Citi News that they won’t hold back until they have an assurance from the Ministry.

“We are here over the issue of our allowances because the Ministry has kept quiet for a long. Government has released the allowances of teacher and nursing trainees, but we have been neglected. Our population is less than 3,000, but that of the teachers and nurses are over 58,000, yet government has refused to release our allowances.  This is the second time we have been here,” one of the students lamented.

This comes on the back of the restoration of allowances of trainee nurses by the New Patriotic Party government.

Allowances of the agric students were scrapped together with that of trainee nurses and teacher trainees by the Mahama government.

President Akufo-Addo has also promised to restore the allowances of teacher trainees.

Former workers of the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority this morning [Thursday] picketed at the headquarters of  the authority in Tema.

The former workers numbering about 200, said they were not treated fairly during a compulsory redundancy program undertaken by the management of the Port in 2002.

The angry ex-workers who are between their late 40s to 70s were clad in red and black dresses with red cloth tired around their necks and wrists.

They carried placards some of which read; Pay us our money, The 14 years of waiting is over, we are dying Mr President, corruption is a high risk venture Mr President among others.

Speaking to Citi News, the workers claimed that government and its agent at the GPHA are deliberately shortchanging them and have over the years refused to pay them the required amount of redundancy packages meant for them.

The group also presented a five-point petition to the management of the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority and among other things gave the management up to Monday 7th November to address them.

Among other things stated in the petition, the workers noted that The redundancy packages paid them during the voluntary redundancy programme were inadequate.

“In 2002, management embarked on a worldbank funded project dubbed ‘voluntary retirement exercise’ to restructure the port. In all five thousand six hundred and ninety five staffs opted to leave voluntarily. However, upon receiving our calculated benefits which included two bags of rice, sugar and a gallon of cooking oil, we detected later that management had shortchanged us. Based on this and more, we are here to be given our differences,” the spokesperson for the ex-workers, Lord Nsia Laryea said.

He added that the ex-workers would take another line of action if nothing is heard from management.

“As we present this petition today, we wish to sound it clear to the leadership of Ghapoha that we have waited for them for far too long and we can no longer wait. We have given them up to Monday to address our issues and failure to do so, we shall advice ourselves.”

The chairman of the ex-workers association, Stephen Ashitey also added that, the unfair treatment of the former workers has brought untold hardship upon them.

“Since 2002 where we went on our voluntary retirement, life has not been easy. Over six hundred have passed on and still counting and all of these are as a result of the severe hardship brought upon us by GPHA.”

He appealed to the president John Mahama to as a matter of urgency prioritize the release of the monies due them since it is long overdue.

Mr Asitey however added that they decided to picket because several attempts to get the attention of key stakeholders in the payment of their monies have not yielded any result.

“We have tried on several occassions to meet all stakeholders involved to address our challenges but to no avail. This is just the beginning, we are not giving up until our monies are pained to us in full. Most of our children are out of school because of this unfortunate programme,” he stated.

Lionel Messi’s masterclass dumped Manchester City out of the Champions League as the Premier League failed to provide a team in the last eight for the second time in three seasons.

Already leading 2-1 from the first leg of the last-16 tie, Barca tore through City as Neymar hit the post early on.
Messi set up Ivan Rakitic, who lobbed Joe Hart for a first-half goal.

City then needed two goals to take it to extra-time but Sergio Aguero’s penalty was saved after he was fouled.
Although that golden opportunity in the 78th minute would have ensured a tense finale at the Nou Camp, it would also have put an unfair slant on the game, which Barca dominated for long periods.

The four-time champions registered 23 attempts toward the City goal but found keeper Hart in superb form as he almost took on a personal duel with Messi and kept the Argentine, and his team-mates, at bay.

City have now failed to reach the quarter-finals in each of their four Champions League campaigns.
As the best paid team in world sport, according to a recent study , it seems like a poor return on that investment.

With a fourth defeat in their last five games, there is also a genuine threat that their season could end up trophy-less. Manuel Pellegrini’s side sit six points behind Premier League leaders Chelsea, who have a game in hand.

Sergio Aguero missed a penalty after being brought down by Gerard Pique

The former Villarreal boss admitted this week that he did not feel under pressure despite speculation that he could be sacked at the end of the season.

But after a wonderful exhibition of cute passing and mesmerising dribbling from Messi, there was little either Pellegrini or his team could do to stop the 27-year-old.

From the beginning, he was a menace, whether exchanging one-twos with Andres Iniesta or curling free-kicks with the type of spin a baseball pitcher would have been proud of.

The only thing missing from Messi’s superlative display was a goal.
But after Neymar had hit the post early on after Vincent Kompany was dispossessed on the edge of his own box, Messi turned provider when he found Rakitic with a crossfield pass following a quick counter-attack.

In City’s only notable chance of the first half, James Milner failed to touch in Yaya Toure’s low cross.
Luis Suarez, who scored twice in the first leg, hit the post before the break and there was no let-up after the interval.

Fortunately for City, Hart had a superb night and made 10 saves overall, a record for an English goalkeeper in the Champions League.

As the game entered its last half hour, the visitors did threaten the Barca goal and they were prepared to leave gaps at the back in doing so.

Their chance to change the tie’s complexion was wasted, though, after Aguero was tripped in the penalty area by Gerard Pique.
City’s top scorer stepped up to take the kick himself but Marc-Andre ter Stegen easily saved to his right.

Marca report that Barcelona’s Lionel Messi was jeered by a section of his own support during yesterday’s match with Atletico Madrid.

With the La Liga title on the line, the Camp Nou crowd were said to have been frustrated by an apparent lack of effort and interest from the player.

The Argentine had another quiet match and rarely threatened the Rojiblancos defence as Diego Simeone’s team clinched the draw they needed to be crowned champions. The article in the Spanish sports newspaper points out that the issue was compounded by the fact that, with Messi having signed a new contract at the club, Barca fans were expecting him to deliver the goods when they were needed most.
