A car has crashed into a police van before bursting into flames around the Champs Élysées area of central Paris, police officials say.

The driver, who had a weapon inside the car, was knocked unconscious and is seriously injured, French media report.

Police say the situation is now under control, and neither law enforcement officers nor civilians were injured.

France is under a state of emergency after being hit by a wave of deadly terror attacks in recent years.

A policeman was shot dead and two others were wounded in an attack on the Champs Élysées in April, just days before the presidential election.

Sniffer dogs

French media, quoting police sources, say the incident on Monday was deliberate.

A white car is standing in the middle of the empty avenue with one door open and sniffer dogs have been sent in, the BBC’s Hugh Schofield reports from Paris.

Reports say officers had to smash the windows of the car to pull the driver out.

Our correspondent says there are always many police and gendarme vehicles near the spot, as it is next to the local police station.

The national police Twitter account had earlier said (in French) that there was an “ongoing police operation”, warning people to respect the security cordon.

The anti-terrorist section of the prosecutor’s office has opened up an investigation.

Interior Minister Gérard Collomb tweeted a picture of himself at the scene of the “attack aimed at our security forces”.

A man has been shot dead after trying to seize a soldier’s weapon at Orly airport in Paris, French officials say.

He was killed by the security forces in a shop after the attack in the airport’s southern terminal.

The airport has been shut after what the authorities described as an extremely serious incident.

The man was on a watch-list of radicalised individuals and had been involved in a shooting hours earlier in the north of Paris, officials say.

The suspect in the earlier incident was stopped at a checkpoint and fired at police with a pellet gun before escaping in a car that was later found abandoned in the southern suburbs.

He is then believed to have used stolen another car that was found at Orly airport. The timing of the sequence of events fits, says the BBC’s Hugh Schofield in Paris.

A security operation is continuing at the airport with bomb disposal experts involved and a search for any possible accomplices.

Police say the attacker was not carrying any explosives.

No-one else was hurt in the incident.

Orly – located 13km (8 miles) south of Paris – is the capital’s second largest airport.

Police have warned people to stay away from the security cordon and people intending to travel to Orly have been advised to make alternative arrangements as all flights in and out of the airport have been suspended.

Scores of passengers have been unable to disembark from aircraft that landed at Orly as the huge security operation takes place.

The French Defence Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian said the man approached a military patrol in the airport and tried to seize a weapon from one of the soldiers.

She managed to keep hold of the gun, and two other soldiers opened fire on the attacker, killing him.

His motivation is not yet known.

The soldiers were part of Operation Sentinel – involving thousands of soldiers deployed to provide back-up to the police after the Paris attacks of November 2015.

France has presidential elections starting from next month and remains under a state of emergency following earlier attacks.

Witnesses said the airport was evacuated soon after the shooting.

“We were sitting in Hall Three when all of a sudden people started running and telling us to run with them,” Ellie Guttetter, 18, from the US said.

“The people running were passengers and flight attendants. It was pretty chaotic and everyone was panicking – it was scary.”

Kim Kardashian has been held at gunpoint in her Paris hotel room.

Her husband, rapper Kanye West, abruptly left his set early at the Meadows Festival in New York on Sunday night after learning of the news.

“Kim Kardashian West was held up at gunpoint inside her Paris hotel room this evening, by two armed masked men dressed as police officers,” a spokesperson said.

“She is badly shaken but physically unharmed.”

A Paris police official confirmed that there was a robbery involving Kardashian but she was unharmed, and that an investigation was underway.

The 35-year-old reality TV star is currently in the French city attending Paris Fashion Week, with her mother Kris Jenner and her sister Kendall Jenner.

West told his concert audience that he had to leave early as he had a “family emergency”.

A number of fans caught on video the moment he announced he was cutting the gig short.

In a later statement they added: “Due to a family emergency, Kanye West was forced to end his performance towards the end of his set.

“We appreciate the great show he put on for fans to close the inaugural Meadows Festival.

“Our thoughts are with West and his family.”

Last week Kardashian was approached by a man who tried to kiss her bottom.

One of her bodyguards intervened.

Vitalii Sediuk, the 27-year-old who tried to touch her, said: “I was protesting Kim for using fake butt implants.

“I encourage her and the rest of Kardashian clan to popularise natural beauty among teenage girls who follow and defend them blindly.”
