An electoral history lecturer at the University of Ghana, Alex Kaakyire Frempong has stated that the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) will win this year’s presidential election if it secures wins in the four swing regions of the country.

He said the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) will need to win in just two of such regions to win the elections.

Speaking at a public lecture on Wednesday in Accra, Mr Frempong said the Central Region will be a key decider on December 7, warning that, the region may ‘punish the NDC’ over some sensitive issues the government has failed to address.

“The Central Region is very sensitive to indecencies to its sons. There are questions about the circumstances surrounding the former President, there are questions about why the President’s wife, in the Brong Ahafo region, is on all the billboards and not Kwesi Amissah Arthur [who is from the Central Region].”

“I’m warning you that the Central Region is very particular about some of these little things,” he said.

He noted that three of the four swing regions were along the country’s coast and vote for a preferred candidate based on issues regarding the supply of pre-mix fuel, pair-trawling and other events that affect fishing.

He said the New Patriotic Party may also suffer the consequence of some wranglings between Ashantis and the people of the Brong Ahafo region over the traditional leadership of Tuobodom.

‘Ghana’s swing regions’

The Greater Accra, Western, Central and Brong-Ahafo regions have been found with an inconsistent voting pattern with no inclination towards a particular political party.

The regions often determine which party emerges the eventual winner.

Ahead of this year’s elections, the two major parties, the NDC and the NPP have been seen holding strategic campaigns in the regions with messages aimed at addressing some key challenges in the regions.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary candidate for Dome-Kwabenya, Mr Nurudeen Mohammed has said that his party is poised to take over the seat from opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP).

According to him, the assertion that the constituency is the stronghold of the NPP hence he stands a very little chance of winning in the upcoming election is false.

He said, “The Dome-Kwabenya Constituency is not the stronghold of any single political party, the seat is winnable and the NPP can therefore not continue to claim ownership of it in the area.”

Mr Mohammed, who was launching his Campaign in the Constituency, said although the NPP had occupied the seat for so many years, the performance of President John Dramani Mahama in the country would catalyse many more people to opt for the NDC in the December polls.

The launch attracted hundreds of party supporters amidst drumming and chanting of the party songs and slogans.
It was also attended by party bigwigs including, Mr Ade Coker, the Greater Accra Regional Chairman of the Party, and other constituency executive members.

Mr Nurudeen Mohammed, who is a Journalist by profession, said with his knowledge of the Constituency, he would work hard to create a better environment for the betterment of the vulnerable and marginalised in society.

He said the incumbent Member of Parliament had nothing to offer the people, which had created the opportunity for the electorate to constantly call for a change to transform their living conditions in the coming days.

“The people have realised that they had been deceived all these years and are, therefore, yearning for a change, which I will offer in humility after the December Polls.”

He, however, cautioned his party supporters to remain calm and vigilant on the voting day to avoid election malpractices.

He promised that a win for him and President Mahama in the Constituency would further step up the provision of development projects in the area and appealed to the electorate to demonstrate their solidarity with the party by voting massively.

Mr Ade Coker, the Greater Accra Regional Chairman of the Party, urged the constituency executives to intensify their house-to house campaign programmes to retain the faith of their supporters.

In doing that, however, the Regional Chairman tasked them to resist any measures that could undermine the peace and unity the country was enjoying.

The governing National Democratic Congress (NDC), says it is expecting about a million votes from the Volta Region in the upcoming general elections.

Some members of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), have said that the NDC will receive less votes in the region in the upcoming elections although it is their stronghold, since they have failed to develop the region.

But the Deputy Volta Regional Minister, Francis Ganyaglo, has said the government has undertaken a lot of development projects in the region which will encourage residents to vote for the NDC to serve a second term in office.

Speaking to Citi News, the minister said claims of widespread apathy among voters in the Volta Region were untrue; and that the party is confident that there will be a huge turnout of voters who will vote for their presidential and parliamentary candidates.

The increasing demand for development by some chiefs and residents of the Volta Region, has triggered speculations of disaffection towards the party ahead of the election.

Francis Ganyaglo said, “John Dramani Mahama has not abandoned the Volta Region. We have had our fair share of development… when it comes to roads, it is amazing the number roads that we have done, some are ongoing and some are in the process of being awarded. When it comes to education infrastructure, we have our fair share.”

“Our chances are very bright and I am sure on that day, 7th December, the people will come out and show their appreciation to John Mahama. Our target as a region will be to have about 1 million votes as the difference between NDC and the next party. We are looking at an average of 96 per cent,” he said.

‘I will never take Volta Region for granted’

President John Dramani Mahama recently assured the chiefs and people of the Volta Region that he would never take the Region for granted.

“Indeed, I shall never take any Region for granted. I pledge to ensure that the Volta Region gets its deserved fair share of the development cake,” he said.

President Mahama gave the assurance in a speech read on his behalf at a grand durbar of chiefs and people of Asogli State to climax this year’s Asogli Yam Festival in Ho.

The assurance from the President was in response to a recent admonishing by Togbe Afede XIV, the Agbogbomefia of Asogli and President of the Region House of Chiefs to politicians against taking the area for granted.

President Mahama said: “Just as President Rawlings and President Atta Mills never forgot about the Volta Region, so shall President John Dramani Mahama never forget about the Volta Region.”

He said he would be the first person to admit that there is still a lot more to do in the region and gave the assurance that the area would see more accelerated growth in his second term as President because of the solid foundation he had laid for “real” growth and development.

A senior member of the Ashanti Regional communication team of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Abass Nurudeen says he is shocked by the decision of one of the party’s communicators to defect to the opposition New Patriotic Party.

Nurudeen in a statement on Thursday said, “I certainly did not know what his [Awal Mohammed] real motives were but considering how spirited he defended the party on radio, nobody, in his wildest imagination, would believe he would pitch camp with our bitterest political opponents at this crucial moment.”

He said the occurrence was unfortunate for the party in the Ashanti Region but exposed the plight of NDC communicators in the region.

Abass Nurudeen lamented that the former NDC communicator “was doing 10 radio stations a week on the average at his own expense but has been unemployed for four years.”

“So how did anyone expect a married man with two kids like Awal to survive if the ruling party cannot take proper care of its working foot soldiers. What on earth will be the motivation to keep dying for it? But then All this is as a result of leadership paralysis on the communication from in the Ashanti region.”

Awal Mohammed, who was the Deputy National Communications Officer for Zongo Caucus, the official wing of National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Zongo communities on Wednesday announced his defection to the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP).

He his defection was based on his “principles and convictions”.

He said he was disappointed the NDC did not state any policy to address concerns of the Zongo community in its recently launched manifesto.

Awal Mohammed added that he believed the as a party had failed to tackle the high unemployment situation in the country resulting in untold hardship on many people.

But Abass Nurudeen in his statement said “I do appreciate the fact that different people play different roles to keep the party going but choosing to be a communicator exposes one to a whole lot of hazards and if there is nothing to show at the end of the day then it gives real cause for concern.”

“As a party, I think it is past time that we instituted welfare schemes to incentivize our rank and file lest we run the risk of losing some of our finest. This is a wakeup call to the powers that be,” his statement concluded.
