The Police in the Eastern Region have cautioned the two major political parties in the country to act in accordance with the public order act or face a possible curfew in areas the two parties clashed.

This follows a clash between some supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the New Juaben North Constituency, resulting in some injuries and destruction of properties.

The incident happened over the weekend during a separate health walk organized by the parties on the same day in the area.

[contextly_sidebar id=”i9JH8RRQ8qEDckCBhuNRpwusrLx2smSA”]Speaking to Citi News, the Eastern Regional Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Yaw Nketiah Yeboah, urged Ghanaians to be tolerant and desist from any acts that could threaten the peace in Ghana.

“We advise each and every one to be law abiding because you don’t know what will happen and curfew can be placed on your community and it will be very sad that because of some bad nuts the whole community will sleep at times 4:00pm and wake up 8:00am or 6:00pm to 6:00am.  We all should be law abiding and help make Ghana as peaceful as we need,” he said.

NDC, NPP to hold health walk on separate days

He further in a separate interview on Eyewitness News hinted that, the Police have agreed with the parties that health walks by the NPP and NDC should be held on different days.

“This coming Saturday, the NDC will go for the health walk; then the following day which is Sunday, the NPP will also go for their health walk. The last weekend before the general elections the NPP will swap with NDC on the days,” he added.

Police hunt for culprits

Meanwhile the Police in the region say they are currently on a manhunt for the perpetrators of the clashes in the New Juaben North constituency.

Surge in NPP, NDC clashes

There has been a surge in violent clashes between members of the two political parties in recent times. In one of the cases, the two parties had the altercation in front of the residence of the NPP flagbearer, Nana Akufo-Addo.

Similar cases have also been recorded in Wulensi, Odododiodoo, Ajumako among other places. But in all such instances, the Police were unable to bring the perpetrators to book.

President John Dramani Mahama has blamed the Police for the clashes that occurred between  some members of his party and the New Patriotic Party at the residence of the NPP flagbearer, Nana Akufo-Addo.

“I think that the Police at Nima should have been better briefed knowing that this group was passing through and then we should have taken the appropriate safeguards so that there would have been no opportunity for that to happen,” he said. mahama-with-tuc-4 Confusion broke out between some supporters of both the NDC and during a health walk organized by the NDC last Sunday.

Though the Police are investigating the matter, both parties have blamed each other for a gunshot heard at the place.

Meanwhile addressing the leadership of the Trade Union Congress today [Tuesday] President Mahama said the situation was avoidable. mahama-with-tuc-3 “Only last Sunday we almost had a clash which was unfortunate, if any of those firearms had been fired and somebody had dropped dead it would have been a completely different situation. So we must be preventive in our actions to ensure that these things won’t happen.”

He also assured that such incident will not happen again. mahama-with-tuc-1 “By my nature I’m not a person encourages violence and  I will never encourage violence so if any such thing would happen, it will not be that I provoked it.  We will try to avoid the flashpoint that creates that kind of situation…So we will take a cue from what happened and make sure that it doesn’t’ happen in the future.”

Let’s stand up against NDC’s bullying Flagbearer of the NPP, Nana Akufo-Addo who also condemned the altercation  described it as “bullying.

“We urge all political parties and Ghanaians committed to promoting peace and deepening our democracy to work with us in securing these ends. Ghanaian democrats, no matter their party affiliation, should stand shoulder to shoulder to defend and promote the aims of our democratic Republic that also include standing up against the bully. Let the President and his army of propaganda warriors be assured that they would not succeed in their intimidation and deliberate propaganda mongering against the NPP and I,” he added.

The Police say they have initiated moves to arrest some persons who allegedly fired gunshots during Sunday’s violent confrontations between the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in front of the Nima residence of NPP flagbearer, Nana Akufo Addo.

According to the Police one of the alleged shooters aimed at one of the unit commanders.

“Our investigation has it that some persons were seen with weapons there and in fact somebody pointed a weapon at the commanding officer of the anti-terrorism unit and also pointed it in the air and dropped it and pointed at him, but for the maximum restraint and the extreme show of professionalism of the Police, we would have been singing a new tune this morning,” Director of Public Affairs at the Ghana Police Service, Superintendent Cephas Arthur said.

[contextly_sidebar id=”nbeLmYpbsg0VLUlLqhu5x1ZPKDgMyGoo”]Speaking to Citi News‘ Franklin Badu Jnr Cephas Arthur assured that all perpetrators of the violence will soon be arrested.

He also noted that the Police will soon review the security at Nana Addo’s residence.

“The Police are still conducting investigation; you know yesterday the Crime Scene management team was there to conduct some exercises of investigation in the house. Presently officers are discussing how to beef up security there. As we speak there is action unit sitting at the Nima Police station taking a very vantage position to ensure that some protection is given the house or the residents and the inhabitants of the flagbearer of the opposition New Patriotic Party. Presently there is some discussion going on, on how to review or revise the security for the house,” Cephas Arthur added.

He also discounted claims that the police have failed to arrest and prosecute all suspects linked to electoral violence.

“We haven’t lost it at all. In fact sometimes I surmise that on daily basis about 500 to 1000 political activities are taking place across the country. And all the time the Police are there to manage them. We are living in a human society; there are people who would want to break the law at all cost. Security is not total absence of crime, it is reduction in crime to the extent that it takes away the fear of crime and the few that occur, and action is taken.”

The NPP’s acting General Secretary, John Boadu at a press conference accused the NDC of attacking their supporters with guns and other weapons.

“Mrs. Rebecca Akufo-Addo’s vehicle got to the traffic light, just 40 yards from the house when a gunshot was heard from the crowd. This time, the security men guarding the house realised the house was under attack…A section of the crowd began surging towards the gate of the house in a clear attempt to enter. For what purpose your guess is as good as mine. Before the NDC fired the shot, one of the guards approached them and demanded of them to leave, whereupon one of the NDC thugs pulled a knife on him, right in the presence of Auntie Becky’s vehicle, but away from her view,” Mr. Boadu added.

But also addressing the press, the NDC Greater Accra Regional Chairman, Ade Coker said they have photos of NPP supporters holding guns and would furnish the Police with the information.

“We are sending these pictures to the IGP and ask for the swift arrest of those in these pictures who were holding guns in the full glare of the police and in front of Akufo-Addo’s residence.”
