A 17-year-old Junior High School pupil, [name withheld], is in police custody for allegedly killing his mother over his missing mobile phone memory card.

The suspect  is said to have hit his 52-year-old mother, Faustina Agyeiwaa several times in the head with a pestle until she fell down, and thereafter he followed up with naked flames in attempts to burn her.

The incident is said to have happened at Wassa J.Y No.1. in the Sefwi Wiawso district on Monday, January 15.

The Sefwi Wiawso Police, who are holding the murder suspect, told Graphic Online that the teenager was arrested and brought to the station by his biological father, Isaac Somuah, aged 58, assisted by one Stephen Amponsah.

Somuah and Amponsah told the police that the suspect had accused his mother of taking his memory card, which the mother denied.

They said Emmanuel became furious and started attacking the mother with a pestle by hitting her on the head several times until she died on the spot.

Her body has since been deposited at the Bibiani government hospital mortuary awaiting autopsy.

Two persons have been put before an Accra Circuit Court for allegedly robbing a mechanic of his motorbike at gunpoint at Ablorman, near Amasaman in Accra.

Luck, however, eluded the robber, Joseph Ahorde, a mason, who left his mobile phone at the scene, and same was used to trace him at his hideout in Ablorman, near Amasaman.

Ahorde then confessed to committing the robbery with Sulley Karim, a mechanic who was armed with a pump action gun on the day of the incident.

Charged with conspiracy to rob and robbery, Ahorde and Karim have pleaded not guilty.

The court presided over by Mrs. Abena Oppong Adjin-Doku, remanded them into Police custody to reappear on January 12.

Chief Inspector Kwabena Adu, prosecuting, told the court that the complainant, Joseph Zormelo, is a motor rider residing at Obeyeyie whiles Ahorde and Karim reside at Ablorman.

Chief Inspector Adu said On December 24, this year, Zomerlo who was in charge of the motorbike with registration M-17-GR4840 was asked by Ahorde to transport him to Ablorman, near Amasaman.

Prosecution said on reaching a section of the road, Ahorde asked the complainant to stop which he did.

Not quite long, prosecution said Karim emerged from the bush with a pump action gun and ordered Mr. Zormelo to surrender his motor bike.

Prosecution said both accused persons snatched the motorbike and sped off. Complainant raised an alarm and witnesses came to the scene and a mobile phone belonging to Ahorde was found at the scene.

According to prosecution, the mobile which had the picture of Ahorde on the screen was used to trace Ahorde and he was picked up at Ablorman.

Prosecution said during interrogation, Ahorde admitted committing the offence with Karim.

Ahorde then led the Police to the house of Karim where the motorbike and pump action gun used in committing the crime were retrieved.

More than 1.5billion mobile phones were sold in 2016, the highest ever in history in a particular year. This means more people are getting connected to their loved ones. However, majority of the devices could not last for long usage. This was majorly because of battery issues. This battery issue could be very annoying because you cannot tap enough juice from your phone.

Battery capacities are usually measured in Milliamps Hour (mAh). It is commonly used to measure the energy capacity of a battery. In general, the more the mAh, the longer the battery capacity or battery life.

Because of the challenge of batteries not lasting long, many OEMs have started producing bigger battery capacity batteries for their phones so that users can get much more from their phones.

However, there is also a dangerous trend among some OEMs who instead of producing bigger battery capacity are hoodwinking the unsuspecting customers by declaring a fake battery capacity when the real capacity is much lower.

Personally speaking, that is one of the most annoying things that can happen to a customer because I have been a victim of buying a fake battery for my phone.

The solution therefore lies in identifying and differentiating between an original and fake battery.

Last week, I did a personal investigation, trying to see which of the brands might be declaring a fake battery capacity. The investigation was done using 3 brands and I found a rather shocking fact. I collected three battery samples from itel Mobile, X-TIGI and Kimfly.

As you can see on the battery casing below, they all had their claimed battery capacity which are 1500mAh, 4000mAh and 2100mAh respectively.

phone-battery

However, knowing full well from my many researches that the true battery capacities are always printed on the main battery case and not the battery paper, I ripped down the battery papers of the 3 aforementioned brands. The result was quite telling.

I found the true battery capacities for two of the brands to be different from what was printed on their battery papers.

battery-revealed

While itel Mobile was true with their claim of 1500mAh, both X-TIGI and Kimfly were not. The real battery capacity of X-TIGTI and Kimfly were 1900mAH and 1000mAH respectively instead of their acclaimed 4100mAH and 2100mAH.

Having been a victim of fake battery before, I must say brands that mislead their customers and the general public should be sanctioned by the Standard Organisation of Nigeria (SON). How can someone buy a phone with a claimed battery capacity of 4100mAh, which ordinary should last over 24 hours only for the person to realise that the phone is just 1900mAh and cannot last for long?

I am not a fan of itel but I must commend itel mobile and all other brands who are honest with their claims about their battery capacity. It is better to tell the world that your phone is 2000mAh and it is true than for brands to say their phone is 5000mAh when the actual capacity is less than 2300mAh.

Below are some other tips to identify fake battery capacities from the real ones.

Tip 1: Rip down the battery paper. If no printed numbers are found on the battery, the phone is probably a fake one.

Tip 2: If you find the printed numbers after ripping down the battery paper, check the real battery capacity and compare it with the claimed and labeled capacity to identify whether the phone is genuine or fake.

Tip 3: Compare the battery weight or volume of two phones which labeled the same capacity. The one with less weight is probably a fake one.

Scientists at the National Centre for Cell Science (NCCS) in Pune have discovered three species of microbes- two bacteria and fungus- that grow on mobile phone screens, PTI reported.

For the research, the team collected samples from 27 mobile phone screens.

They found 515 different bacterial types and 28 different fungi, including the three new species.

Praveen Rahi, one of the scientists on the team, said that these bacteria and fungi thrive on human bodies. But he points out they are friendly to humans.

Studies carried out earlier have found that smartphone and tablet screens carry more germs than a toilet seat.

A 2013 report by British watchdog “Which?” collected samples from 90 devices and found “hazardous” levels of bacteria that can make people sick, including E. coli, NYDailyNews reported.

The report said that this could be because of the busy lifestyle that people lead today with many carrying their cellphones to the loo.

Phones also get hot and are mostly held in our hands or kept in bags and pockets. This too provides for suitable conditions for germ growth.

In another study in 2015, carried out by Dr. William DePaolo, assistant professor in the Molecular Microbiology and Immunology department of the University of Southern California, collected swabs from the phone screens of Buzzfeed employees to check for bacteria in comparison to a toilet seat.

They found that while the toilet had around 3 species of bacteria, the cellphones has on an average 10-12 species of bacteria.

The phone screens also had “worse types of bacteria” including E. coli and faecal bacteria.

There are about 25,000 germs on each square inch of your cellphone.

But is it as bad as it sounds? Can these bacteria on your cellphone be really harmful and make you sick?

A report in Bustle states that the alarming studies claiming that cellphones are 10 times dirtier than the average toilet seat can be sometimes misleading.

That is because the toilet seat may be an unfair comparison as it may after all may not be the dirtiest place in your house.

According to Dr Chuck Gerba, professor of microbiology at the University of Arizona, the toilet seat is one of the cleanest places in the house. Even cleaner than your chopping board.

“It’s one of the cleanest things you’ll run across in terms of micro-organisms. It’s our gold standard – there are not many things cleaner than a toilet seat when it comes to germs,” he told the BBC.

“Usually there are about 200 times more faecal bacteria on the average cutting board than on a toilet seat,” he says.

Also, like Praveen Rahi of NCSS pointed out, not all the germs may be harmful.

This is not to say that all germs are harmless because some of them could be.

So it is a good idea to keep your phone clean. Since you cannot dip it in water and soap, antibacterial wipes made specifically to clean electronics could come handy.

Another way to keep your phones clean, experts suggest, is by keeping your hands clean.

Not just phones, ATMs are quite dirty too

A research from last year found that the keypad of automated teller machines (ATM) may be loaded with bacteria from spoiled food to parasites that may also cause sexually transmitted disease (STDs).

Automated teller machine (ATM) keypads represent a specific and unexplored microhabitat for microbial communities.

“Our results suggest that ATM keypads integrate microbes from different sources, including the human microbiome, foods, and potentially novel environmental organisms adapted to air or surfaces,” said Jane Carlton, Professor at New York University, US.

“DNA obtained from ATM keypads may therefore provide a record of both human behaviour and environmental sources of microbes,” Carlton added.

The researchers in June and July 2014 took swabs of keypads from 66 ATM machines from Manhattan, Queens, and Brooklyn, in the US.

Specifically, the most common identified sources of microbes on the keypads were from household surfaces such as televisions, restrooms, kitchens and pillows, as well as from bony fish, mollusks and chicken.

Residual DNA from a meal may remain on a person’s hands and be transferred to the ATM keypad upon use, the researchers suggested.

ATM keypads located in laundromats and stores had the highest number of biomarkers with the most prominent being Lactobacillales (lactic acid bacteria), which is usually found in decomposing plants or milk products.

In other samples, the researchers observed the biomarker Xeromyces bisporus, which is associated with spoiled baked goods.

In addition, the team found a parasite typically seen in the gut of humans and other mammals, along with a species closely related to the human parasite Trichomonas vaginalis, which can potentially cause STD.

However, there is no significant difference was found in the keypads from ATMs located outdoors versus indoors, the researcher noted, in the paper published in the journal ‘mSphere.’

Nokia’s 3310 phone has been relaunched nearly 17 years after its debut.

Many consider the original handset iconic because of its popularity and sturdiness. More than 126 million were produced before it was phased out in 2005.

The revamped version will be sold under licence by the Finnish start-up HMD Global, which also unveiled several Nokia-branded Android smartphones.

One expert said it was a “fantastic way” to relaunch Nokia’s phone brand.

“The 3310 was the first mass-market mobile and there’s a massive amount of nostalgia and affection for it,” commented Ben Wood from the technology consultancy CCS Insight.

“If HMD had just announced three Android devices they would have barely got a couple of column inches in the press.

“So, the 3310 is a very clever move and we expect it will sell in significant volumes.”

The announcement was made ahead of the start of the Mobile World Congress tech show in Barcelona. LG, Huawei and Lenovo are among others to have unveiled new devices.

Nokia no longer makes phones itself, but manufactures telecoms equipment, Ozo virtual reality cameras, and health kit under the Withings brand.

Long life
The new 3310 qualifies as a “feature phone” rather than a smartphone as it only provides limited internet facilities.

It relies on 2.5G connectivity – which has slower data speeds than 3G or 4G – and is powered by the S30+ operating system, which allows web browsing but has a much smaller range of apps than Android or iOS. Its single camera is also restricted to two megapixels.

However, its advantage over more powerful handsets is its battery life. HMD says the colour-screened phone has up to a month’s standby time and delivers more than 22 hours of talk time.

It also comes with the modern version of the classic game Snake preinstalled.

Its launch price is €49 ($51,75; £41.51).

“It’s almost like a digital detox or a holiday phone,” HMD’s chief executive Arto Nummela told the BBC.

“If you want to switch off to an extent but you still need to have a [mobile] lifeline, it’s a brilliant solution.

“Why wouldn’t you buy this like candy? If you see this hanging on the shelf at the checkout in a [see-through] package, then you’d just buy it as an accessory.”

Android phones
HMD also confirmed the Nokia 6 Android smartphone would be released worldwide following its China debut in January.

The device has a 16 megapixel rear camera, a 5.5in (14cm) 1080p “full definition” screen and includes the Google Assistant helper – the search engine’s rival to Apple’s Siri.

It is priced as a mid-tier device at €229, alongside a glossy black special edition that costs €299.
In addition, the firm showed off smaller, lower-range Nokia 5 and Nokia 3 models.

Taiwan’s Foxconn will manufacture the phones, which may offset concerns that networks might have about HMD’s capacity to deliver.

“Foxconn – with its experience working with Apple and Samsung – is certainly the standout device manufacturer,” commented Tim Coulling from the tech research firm Canalys.

“It’s ability to help HMD go from small to large scale will be a critical factor in their partnership.

“It also means if HMD wants to locate manufacturing in different regions to take advantage of pockets of demand, that’s something Foxconn will allow them to achieve.”

However, another market watcher said HMD’s success was far from guaranteed.

“Resurrecting one of Nokia’s feature phone bestsellers seems like a good beachhead to attack the smartphone market.

“But another part of Nokia’s heritage was its high-end devices.

“What HMD needs next is a higher-end [Android smartphone] that is different, and that’s always a problem with Android: how do you differentiate?

“Nokia’s brand will get them so far – especially in emerging markets – but trying to push into the high-end versus Apple, Samsung or even Huawei will be tough.”

There is no doubt what the headlines will be from the HMD Global Nokia event here in Barcelona – and they won’t be about a new range of slick Android smartphones.

Yes, the reboot of the Nokia 3310 is fun – and perhaps there is a huge audience for a return to a time when all you could do with a phone was make calls and play Snake.

But make no mistake, if this piece of nostalgia is the future of the Nokia brand then it is doomed. And of course the smart team at HMD Global know that. They haven’t built partnerships with Foxconn, Google and hundreds of operators around the world on the promise of a return to the 2G past.

It is phones like the Nokia 6 – apparently already selling well in China – which are key to any hopes of making the Finnish brand a force to be reckoned with again. But of course yet another slab of metal and glass running Android was never going to excite the analysts and journalists tired of overblown launches where the words “awesome” and “revolutionary” are thrown around like confetti.

Hence the decision to remind us of Nokia’s glorious past, where everyone seemed to have a phone with that familiar ringtone and nobody was asking to borrow a charger to get them through the day. A stroke of marketing genius then – but a risky strategy.

If the phone-buying public one now sees Nokia as a retro brand rather one which has been reinvigorated for the 4 and 5G future, then HMD may come to regret its 3310 gimmick.

An Accra Circuit Court on Wednesday remanded one Clifford Nii Laryea, a footballer for conspiring with one Stephen, now at large, and stealing an Infinix Hot S mobile phone worth GHc 560.00.

Clifford who was also charged for causing unlawful damage, pleaded guilty.

He however pleaded not guilty to the charges of conspiracy and stealing.

In his explanation Clifford said he, together with his friend had a misunderstanding with the complainant and during a little struggle his colleague hit the complainant and his mobile phone fell down and the screen got broken.

The court however entered a plea of not guilty for him on the charge of causing harm, based on his explanation.

The case was adjourned to January 25.

The facts of the case as presented by Superintendent Kweku Bempah are that the complainant is a Taxi Driver, while the accused person is a Footballer.

He said on December 30, 2016, the complainant was on his normal rounds soliciting for passengers at about 0330 hours, when Clifford and one Stephen currently at large stopped him for his service.

He said during negotiation, Clifford and his accomplice stood by the taxi on opposite sides, so while Stephen engaged the complainant, Clifford took the complainant’s Infinix hot S mobile phone at his blind site.

The prosecution said when the two, noticed that they had succeeded in appropriating the complainants phone they asked him to go since they could not afford the GH₵ 12.00 he was demanding.

The complainant shortly detected his phone had been stolen and confronted the accused and his accomplice but they beat him up.

He struggled with them but they over powered him and went away with the phone.

Superintendent Bempah told the court that the complainant then sought the assistance of his friends and they mounted a search for the two.

He said Clifford was spotted around photo club on the Oxford Street and was arrested. When a search was conducted on him, the complainants Infinix phone was found on him with the screen shattered.

He said Clifford was handed over to the police and during investigation, he denied the offence in his caution statement.
