The Evangelical Presbyterian College of Education (E.P.C.E), Bimbilla, in the Nanumba North District of the Northern Region, has held a matriculation ceremony to welcome 418  students admitted into the college to pursue three-year Diploma programmes in Basic Education for the 2017/2018 academic year.

The college was established in October 1962 by the Presbyterian Church to run a four-year cert “A” Teacher Training programme, and started with 35 male students and three teaching staff.

In September 1975, admissions were expanded to include female students and the first batch of 20 female students were admitted.

Following the upgrading of the status of the Teacher Training Colleges into Colleges of Education, the E.P College of Education, Bimbilla, was upgraded to a tertiary institution to train teachers in Science and General programme.

The college has a total student enrollment of 1,680 made up of 1,284 male students, and 396 female students with a teaching staff 42, including 3 females, and 84 members of the non-teaching staff.

This year’s enrollment figure stands at 418 students, which according to the Principal of the College, Abdulai Abu Wemah, is a drastic decrease in the number of students enrolled in the College.

He revealed that only 418 applicants qualified for admission, out of over 1,000 candidates who applied. Out of that number, 332 students are pursuing the General programme, and 86 students are studying science.

Addressing the matriculants, the Principal of the EP College of Education, Bimbilla Abdulai Abu Wemah, advised them to take their studies seriously in the quest to obtain a Diploma in Basic Education (BDE) Certificate, as the continuous assessment plays an important role in their academic progression.

He urged students to use the course outline as a guide to study on their own.

On the achievements, the Principal noted that, the academic performance of the College has improved, as they attained a 100 percent pass rate in the 2016/2017 final exams, with five students obtaining first class.

The College also performed well in sports, winning two first-place trophies in soccer and women’s volleyball.

The College is faced with serious challenges in terms of classrooms and residential accommodation, and as such, is unable to accommodate most of its staff.

The women’s hostel is also in a deplorable shape, whilst access to electricity, water, internet and office accommodation are some of the other challenges the school faces.

The Principal mentioned that the school has vast land for future expansion projects,  adding that the College has also signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), with the University for Development Studies (UDS), for the establishment of a study center in the College to run first degree programmes.

Mr. Abu Wemah urged the matriculants to use appropriate channels in addressing their grievances, and encouraged them to relate very well with each other.

The Founder and President of Family Health University College, Prof. Yao Kwawukume, has stated that the institution remains committed in keeping abreast with modern methods of teaching and learning.

He said the school is one of the few Medical Schools in the Sub-region that uses real Cadavers (human parts) to study Anatomy, and also has the modern state of the art Anatomage (incorporating the latest convertible technology) to enhance the learning capacity of their students.

“We make sure you are introduced to the hospital wards from the first year of your training and get to use real Cadavers to study Anatomy” he noted.

Prof. Kwawukume made this known when gave the welcome address at the 3rd Matriculation Ceremony of Family Health University College Medical School, Ghana’s premier private medical school at Teshie, opposite the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre in Accra.

He told the new entrants to remember the words of Albert Einstein, a great philosopher who stated that “Education is not the learning of facts, but the training of the mind to think.”

Prof. Kwawukume further tasked the students to study hard and be innovative.

“We are here to give you the fundamentals with which to build the future of modern medicine. The sky is no more the limit, explore and create the future of medicine with excellence and distinction. Do not forget to be caring towards the society you seek to heal and offer comfort from their ailments.”

The vision of the Medical School he hinted, is to take medical education to a new level not only for Ghana and West Africa, but Africa and beyond.

He assured parents that, their effort in seeking the best for their children would not be in vain due to the kind of lecturers and modern facilities at the disposal of the school.

The Guest speaker, Dr. Tony Oteng-Gyasi, Managing Director of Tropical Cables and Conductors Ltd, appealed to government to have a strong regulatory framework for quality management of private schools, and ensure a minimum amount of reinvestment for expansion and infrastructure improvement.

He reminded government to deliver on the promise to remove 25% corporate tax on private tertiary institutions.

“I strongly urge Government to follow through this policy” he noted.

He said private institutions should not be a taxable opportunity in a nation that is unable to provide enough places for qualified applicants. He encouraged the students to learn and relearn new things if they want to stay relevant and be worthy health workers.

Dr. Oteng-Gyasi reminded the students that human life is not a negotiable commodity.

“You are training to be either a good doctor or a bad doctor. There is no middle ground. You cannot be a good doctor when the money is not adequate.”

He commended Prof. Kwawukume and his wife, Dr. Susan Bridget Kwawukume (co-Founder/Chief Medical Director of Family Health Hospital) for their effort to help build Ghana as far as the transformation of education and health sectors are concerned.

Family Health University College comprises a Hospital, Nursing and Midwifery School and a Medical School.

It is Ghana’s premier private medical school with modern facilities, spacious laboratories and lecture halls.

Family Health Medical School is affiliated to the University of Ghana and accredited by the National Accreditation Board.

The School offers a six-year Bachelor of Surgery and Bachelor of Medicine (MB ChB) programmes.

At the end of the first three years, the student obtains a Bachelor of Science Degree and thereafter the MB ChB Degree which qualifies one as a Medical Doctor.

Students entering the school this year comprise those from Cameroon, Nigeria, Benin, the United States of America, Britain and Canada.

Wisconsin International University College over the weekend held its 15th Matriculation Ceremony to welcome 983 students into the institution.

This number is made up of 411 males (41.81%), and 572 females (58.19%) from 13 countries.

The ceremony was graced by Chairman of the University Council, Justice Isaac Duose, Vice Chancellor Prof Obeng Mireku, and Vice President of Synergies Institute-Ghana, Ogochukwu Nweke as guest speaker.

Speaking at the event, Vice Chancellor Prof Obeng Mireku promised the students of the institution’s support towards their academic excellence.

“Investing in your tertiary education has come at great cost and sacrifice to many of your families. Parents and guardians, spouses, families – if there are any here present – be rest assured that, individually and collectively, the staff, faculty and management of this great institution, will do all that is in their power to equip, empower, enrich and encourage these matriculants to reach the pinnacle of their potential. We will provide opportunities to deepen their knowledge, expand their understanding of society and the world, and build their skills to prepare them for employment, innovation and entrepreneurship.”

He added that, the students must be responsible and committed to their studies.

“I encourage and charge each one of you, matriculants, to equally do all that is in your power to apply yourselves, seize opportunities and resolve to make yourselves, your families and your nations proud. Completing your programme of study successfully depends largely on you. It depends on how seriously you take your studies; it depends on the choices you make; it depends on the single-mindedness of your determination to succeed”.

Chairman of the University Council, Justice Isaac Duose, cautioned the matriculants on the choices they make as they climb the academic ladder.

“My appeal to you is that you choose wisely. Choose your friends wisely. Choose wisely how you spend your time, resources and energy. Choose wisely who you want to become. Choose wisely what you want your personal brand to be. If you make a wrong choice, learn from it, move on and make a choice not to repeat it. This is how character is formed. This is how destiny is cast. That is what we call experience.”

“Do not sacrifice your future for the now, by choosing only what is expedient, what is easy to get. Think ahead– think of how your actions would affect you and others today, tomorrow and forever” he admonished.

Professor Samuel Adams, the Acting Rector of Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA), on Friday advised students of the Public Sector Management Training Programme to study hard and uphold the value of the institute.

He challenged the students to study hard and impact positively the knowledge to be acquired to improve efficiency in the public sector in their respective countries.

[contextly_sidebar id=”SROgBDuEArFe2UaffxRizDHcdjulsZgv”]Prof. Adams, also the Head of Academic and Administration of the Institute, gave the advice at the 12th Cohort matriculation ceremony of 28 students from four West African countries who undertook a one-year Master of Public Sector Management Degree programme sponsored by the African Capacity Building Foundation (ACBF) and hosted by GIMPA.

The countries include Ghana, The Gambia, Sierra Leone and Liberia and the programme was designed to equip Anglophone West Africa countries with a critical mass of public sector managers trained to provide effective leadership for meeting the developmental challenges in their various countries.

“You need to have a vision in preparation of the programme because that would drive your aspiration to succeed and you need to broaden your horizon and expand your experiences for the course to make you better,” he said.

He said the public sector played a critical role in effective administration of any country and it was imperative for them to harness and integrate their skills to be change ambassadors as far as reforms in the sector was concerned.

Prof. Adams said GIMPA had trained more than 400 students through the programme since its inception in 2010 and expressed the hope that participants, at the end of the course, would contribute to the collective pursuit of sustainable development and poverty reduction on the African Continent.

Mrs Naomi Omani Marbell, the Class President of the programme, commended GIMPA for hosting them as well as the ACBF for the funding and pledged their commitment to adhere to the rules of the institute for the success of the course to make an impact on Africa.

“We expect an interactive session with the lectures as we gain new knowledge to build the needed capacity in the civil service in West Africa.

“We hope to learn from each other and widen our horizon to face emerging challenges on the African Continent and contribute our quota in our respective countries for development,” she said.

The University of Education Winneba, has admitted a total number of 7,768 students for various distance education programmes in the 2016/2017 academic year.

This is made up of 6,635 undergraduate students, 568 postgraduate students of the Institute for Educational Development and Extension (IEDE), and 565 students of the Faculties of Technical and Vocational Education of the College of Technology Education of the University of Education Winneba.

The IEDE of the UEW, was established in 1996, to afford the continuing students and prospective applicants the opportunity to access university education conveniently at their doorsteps and at manageable cost without sacrificing quality.

Addressing a matriculation ceremony on Friday, the Vice-Chancellor Professor Mawutor Avoke, noted that the University of Education, has over the years increased its distance learning centers from 33 to 37 across the country.

He said the new learning centers would help bring education closer to the doorsteps of students in the northern part of the nation.

The four are located at Accra High School, Accra, Northern School of Business, Tamale, Offinso College of Education, Offinso and Gbewaa College of Education, Pusiga.

Professor Avoke entreated the brilliant but needy students, to take advantage of the Vice-Chancellor’s scholarship fund.

The fund, which was established in line with Objective 10 of the university’s Strategic Plan, seeks to expand university education access to the underprivileged, marginalized, persons living with disability and persons from less endowed schools.

“The Vice-Chancellor’s Scholarship Fund for Needy but brilliant Students has been instituted to provide financial assistance to students. I am happy to inform you that, last semester, sixty (60) beneficiaries were recommended for the scholarship. You are encouraged to visit the University’s website for details about the financial opportunities available.” he stated

He encouraged the students to make good use of the UEW Distance Education App, which has been placed on Google playstore for e-copies of their modules.

“Install the App on your tablets, computers and mobile phones and read the modules wherever you are. We will continue to strive to ensure that all your modules are supplied to you in good time.” he stressed.

He charged the students to cultivate the habit of reading before and after tutorials in order to achieve their aim.

“As a distance education student, you are expected to be an independent learner, and the results you attain are directly attributed to the efforts you put into your studies. It is therefore important that most of the work be done by you and tutorial sessions would serve as an avenue to supplement what you have read. Your tutors will serve as facilitators in this regard to help you develop effective study habits and explore your strengths and limitations to your benefit.” he added.
