The police have arrested five suspects in connection with the killing of a police officer at Lapaz in the Greater Accra Region in daylight robbery incident which occurred in July 2017.

One police officer was shot dead, while another was injured by some assailants.

The suspects were said to be on a robbery mission in the area, but shot the policemen to prevent him from thwarting their operation.

[contextly_sidebar id=”Y7yHq39KAsCrgeErPGVwvJIt3UyNPOwa”]The two assailants, who came to the area on an unregistered motorbike abandoned it, snatched an unregistered Hyundai Elantra saloon vehicle, and sped off towards Mallam Junction direction.”

Briefing the media on the matter today [Thursday], the Inspector General of Police (IGP), David Asante-Apeatu, said the five suspects included the two who shot the police officers.

“…Five persons have been arrested in connection with the murder of constable Daniel Owusu, who was shot dead by armed robbers in Accra on 13th July 2017, while he was performing a patrol duty.”

“They are Benjamin Nii Lantey Flexi Boye, age, 27, Kassim Mukaila alias Ekpe, 30 years, Laila Mohammed, 20 years, Musah Ibrahim, alias Moses can do, 27, and Abass Abdulai, 36. Kassim Mukaila and alias Ekpe and Musah Ibrahim were the suspects who shot, but went into hiding immediately after the incident until recently when they were arrested,” he added.

Two Kwabenya fugitives, two armed robbers arrested

The IGP also announced that, two of the seven suspects who escaped from the Kwabenya Police station last Sunday, after armed assailants broke into the station and released them, have been rearrested.

He said they were arrested at Worawora in the Volta Region.

He also added that three persons who aided the escape of the fugitives, including a 28-year-old woman, have also been arrested.

“We have since arrested two of the fugitives on Tuesday 23rd January at Worawora in the Volta Region. They are Atta Kwadwo and Prince Osei. Also, two accomplices who aided the escape of the fugitives were arrested in Accra on Monday 22nd January 2018, and yesterday [Wednesday], 24th January 2018,” the IGP said.

He noted that “these include a 28-year old woman named Nancy Bentah alias Awura Ama. The other is George Yeboah Ackah, aka Kwesi Shower, adding that, “One more person, Kofi Acheampong, alias Nana Owuo, aged 32, was also arrested at Afienya.”

He also said a GHc15,000 reward package has been set aside for persons who may give the police information leading to the arrest of the rest of the criminals.

“A reward of GHc15, 000 awaits any person who gives credible information leading to their arrest.”

Heightened fears

Such cases of attack on police officers seem to have heightened fears in the country with a number of people feeling insecure.

The IGP also used the opportunity to allay such fears, saying the country is safe.

“I take this opportunity to once again assure the good people of Ghana and the international community to remain calm, and support the Ghana Police,” Mr. Asante-Apeatu added.

The Police Service is on a manhunt for two armed men who shot two officers in broad daylight at Lapaz in Accra.

The criminals were said to be on a robbery mission in the area but shot the policemen  to prevent the officers from thwarting their operation.

Citi News gathered that the incident occurred at about 1 pm around a popular restaurant in the area, Las Palmas.

Some eyewitnesses said the robbers were on a motorbike when they carried out the shooting and subsequently stole a vehicle from a motorist before speeding off towards Kasoa.

The Police Service is yet to formally react to the development. The condition of the shot officers remains unknown.

Barely a month ago, a Policeman believed to be in his 30s was shot dead by two armed men. The officer, Michael Kporye, was shot in the face and in the chest at Tulaku near Michel Camp, in the Greater Accra Region.

Suspected armed robbers have shot and wounded a Police officer at Akwansrem in the Ashanti Region.

A few weeks later, Lance Corporal Kwaku Mensah, who was stationed at Anwiankwanta in the Bekwai Municipality, sustained several gunshot wounds when gunmen attacked a vehicle he was traveling on.

The vehicle was attacked by gun-wielding robbers who attacked the vehicle at about 10 pm.

Some parts of Lapaz and surrounding areas in the Greater Accra Region, are currently in darkness following a deliberate action by the Kaneshie branch of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) to cut power supply to them.

According to the ECG, it took the action because one of its transformers situated at the Lapaz lorry park has been turned into refuse dump.

The ECG has vowed not to restore power to the affected areas until the filth is cleared.

Parts of the Lapaz township as well as other areas that take their power supply from the said transformer including Abrantie and parts of Nyamekye junction, have been without power for the past three days.

But the transport operators who occupy the lorry park have insisted that they are not to blame for the filth around the transformer.

According to the drivers, the lorry park has dedicated trucks that collect refuse from the park on a daily basis, adding that the filth that has engulfed the transformer were carried there by the wind.

Meanwhile, when citifmonline.com visited the park on Friday morning, the filth has been cleared from the transformer which had been barricaded with wire gauze.

The Chairman of the Ghana Road Transport Union (GPRTU) branch at the Lapaz lorry park, Aboagye Asare, told citifmonline.com that the leadership of the lorry park organized some of their men to clear the filth at the site.

“I was very angry when they [ECG] told us that the light had been taken off because of the refuse. We have a welfare scheme through which we bought our own trucks to collect refuse at this lorry park. So if you come and see refuse in your yard, how do you accuse us and put the light off? Who is not afraid to get closer to an ECG transformer. The filth is carried there by the wind. We even thought it was an electrical fault until we were told yesterday that it was due to the filth. We don’t dump refuse there,” he stated.

The walkway under the Old Achimota overhead appears to have been converted into a dumping site with heaps of refuse almost spilling over onto the road.

Street sweepers under the Zoomlion National Youth Employment Programme module, are also along with pedestrians and residents, contributing to the refuse heaped there.

The sweepers who interacted with Citi News at the Old Achimota walkway indicated that, they have been instructed by their bosses to dump the refuse they collect on the pavement for collection later on.

Organic waste generated from homes and inorganic waste are all dumped on the pavement.

The situation was the same at Lapaz where the Zoomlion sweepers claimed that their bosses told them to pile the refuse on the pavement for collection.

One of the sweepers suggested to Citi News that, the delay in collecting the refuse might be due to faulty trucks.

Some hawkers on the pavement at the Old Achimota walkway complained that the refuse there often lasts for almost a month before Zoomlion trucks come for collection.

But one of the Zoomlion sweepers, who spoke to Citi News, said the rubbish did not remain under the walkway for about a month as was alleged, but was usually collected after two weeks.

The sweeper admitted that, refuse heaped under the walkway was worrying, but said there was nowhere else for them to dump the rubbish.

She further revealed to Citi News that she and her colleagues have not been paid their GhC100.00 monthly salary since January. She lamented that life for her as a widow is very difficult and called on authorities of Zoomlion to pay them soon.
