Some victims of flooding in the Koforidua municipality are appealing for support from government and other well-meaning organizations to help them reorganize themselves again.

Days after the incident which resulted in the loss of property worth several thousands of Ghana cedis, some residents are still unsettled as they are yet to receive assistance from government.

Citi News gathered that some residents have been forced to relocate to another area for the fear of another flood after three consecutive instances in the last one month.

Assets worth several thousands of Ghana cedis were on Sunday lost to floods in the Eastern Regional capital, Koforidua.

An over 3-hour long downpour swept through areas such as Oyoko, Abrewa Nkwanta, Asokore, Pipeline, Effiduase and Highways, displacing many families and washing away properties including cars.

Reports indicate that the area suffered another flood on Sunday. The areas worst hit were the main Koforidua-Suhum, Koforidua-Asokore, Koforidua-Asokore-Kuma roads.

Some residents were trapped in their homes with others trying to salvage some household properties.

Meanwhile, the Eastern Regional Security council (REGSEC) has directed all assembly members in the municipality to organise a special clean-up exercise on Saturday, to de-silt gutters and choked drains as a measure to allow free flow of water after the rains.

Some affected shop owners told Citi News that although the areas are known to be flood-prone, the havoc wrecked by Sunday’s rains has been the worst.

Citi News’ correspondent, Neil Nii Amatey Kanarku, said some fire officers who arrived at a flooded fuel station at Abrew Nkwanta were helpless as the situation was beyond their control.

Some affected residents accused a road contractor assigned to reconstruct deplorable roads in the area of a poor job, hence the regular floods.

“About three (3) years ago the contractor came and reconstructed the roads and fixed small culverts instead of a big one we had previously. Since then, we’ve not had our peace in this area because since the the beginning of this month, we’ve been experiencing floods anytime it rains so we have a big problem here.  Government must come and help us because we don’t know what to do,” an affected resident lamented.

Another resident who spoke to Citi News said, “I have lost a deep  freezer, mattress and other things. I don’t know where to sleep so I am just hanging around. We are hoping the water subsides then maybe we can do something about the situation.”

‘Two die in flood’

Last week,  two people died after heavy rains ravaged parts of Koforidua in the Eastern Region. The town was submerged in flood waters which washed away parked vehicles and other property.

Some residents sustained various degrees of injury as well. A freelance journalist, Ferdinand Akuffo Baah told Citi News they found the two people dead in a taxi after being trapped in the flood waters.

“…The rain kept on consistently for more than an hour… I had the opportunity of moving around with NADMO’s rapid response team and we saw so many damages, cars were trapped, lives and properties were at risk. We recorded two deaths and a whole lot of cars and properties damaged.”

Areas such as Nsukwa and Kenkey factory were badly affected.

The National Disaster Management Organization said some 2,000 residents and 150 houses were affected by the downpour.

‘Partiality in distribution of relief items’

Meanwhile, some residents in the affected communities are accusing the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), of refusing to come to their aid following the destruction of their property after the floods last week. They also accused the disaster management body of distributing relief items to only sympathizers of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
