The Municipal Chief Executive for the Komenda, Edina, Eguafo, Abrem (KEEA) Municipal Assembly, Nana Appiah Korang, has urged members and sympathizers of the ruling New Patriotic Party who have high hopes of getting appointments and employment opportunities but are yet to have their expectations met, to exercise restraint and desist from causing unrest in their various constituencies.

He says six months after the Party’s landslide victory in the 2016 December polls is relatively a short period for the government to meet the expectations of all Ghanaians, adding that the government is poised to achieve its agenda of creating more jobs through a number of initiatives including the one district, one factory and the planting for food and jobs program.

Mr. Appiah Korang was addressing over 700 delegates at the KEEA constituency annual delegates conference of the NPP in Elmina.

He noted that many party members and sympathizers feel disappointed and agitated due to unfulfilled expectations, and appealed to them to eschew all forms of violence and support the government to execute its campaign promises.

The newly confirmed KEEA constituency chairman of the NPP, Ken Kufour, commended the delegates for their role in securing victory for the party and encouraged them to work hard to enable the party to retain power in the 2020 general elections.

The constituency Secretary, Andrew Essuman Prah, urged  party members to eschew acrimony and unite for a common purpose of retaining power in the 2020 elections.

The NPP Communications Director for KEEA, Solomon Ebo Appiah, encouraged the delegates and NPP party members to use internal party structures to seek redress in the event of misunderstandings.

He also called on party members especially communicators, to focus on propagating the positive achievements of the ruling NPP Government.

The Parliamentary Candidate for the Progressive People’s Party (PPP), in the Komenda Edina Eguafo Abirem (KEEA) Constituency in the Central Region, John Sterlin, is aiming at winning 65% of the valid votes cast on 7th December.

He said he is the best to represent the aspirations of the electorates of KEEA in the next parliament.

John Sterlin, who is contesting the KEEA parliamentary seat for the first time, said he is optimistic of winning the seat, given what he has done for his constituents.

“They are aware of what I have done and what John Sterlin can do to help them when I go to parliament. The teeming unemployed youth would be given jobs and as a fisherman, I would speak on the sustainability of the fishing stock and given this, I believe I am winning 65% votes at the polls,” he posited.

He made these comments in an interview with citifmonline.com, when during his campaign trail over the weekend, where he addressed opinion leaders at Kwanhenkrom, Kissi and Komenda.

He alluded to the fact that, his political career was motivated by his brother in-law Dr. Papa Kwesi Nduom.

John Sterling, is a manager at one of Dr. Nduom's Hotels.
John Sterling, is a manager at one of Dr. Nduom’s Hotels.

“You know Dr. Papa Kwesi Ndoum himself is a big motivation and inspiration. If you get know him well you won’t want to follow anybody else in Ghana politics. He is very forthright and a very reliable person who convinced me to be in politic.”

He promised to curb illegal fishing activities in the fishing industry in the area, when voted into office.

He said he would ensure availability of premix fuel for the every fisherman to enhance their fishing expedition especially in bumper seasons.

He added that, an incoming PPP government would build citrus factory in order to enhance the farming communities in KEEA.

“I have seen oranges rotten myself in the constituency because of bad roads and lack of factories to buy the oranges so we would build cottage factories to produce juices for the schools and hotels in Ghana,” he noted.

He said he would be the best choice for the predominantly NDC constituency because he has a better chance than both the candidates of the NPP and the NDC.

“Nana Ato Arthur of the NPP has been the MCE for four years, he was the deputy regional minister for one and half years, and a regional minister for two and half years, and top of that we have given him the Member of Parliament position for four years; what does he haveto show? If he has something to show it would be out there for us to see. And the NDC candidate Samuel Atta Mills where does he comes from? He couldn’t even locate Brenuakyinim a popular village in this constituency. He should go to Ekumfi Otuam and contest there,” he stated.

The KEEA Seat

The KEEA has traditionally been an NDC seat since 1992, until 2004, when Dr. Nduom won it on the ticket of the Convention People’s Party (CPP).

His win was made possibly because of an alliance with the New Patriotic Party (NPP), for which reason the party failed to put forward a candidate.

Dr. Nduom left the seat to contest as a presidential candidate in 2008 on the CPP’s ticket.

The seat thus fell back to the NDC with Dr. J.S. Annan as the MP.

However, due to an internal division that saw an Independent Candidate, Dr. Ato Quarshie emerging from the NDC, the party lost the seat to the NPP for the first time, with the incumbent MP, Nana Ato Arthur.

Could PPP win?

Although the PPP as a party has not made any significant gains in terms of votes in elections 2012 in both parliamentary and presidential, the party seems to have a better chance this time round.

The PPP Parliamentary Candidate, John Sterling, is relying heavily on the influence of his in-law Dr. Papa Kwesi Nduom, whose growing business investments across the country and in the KEEA area, has given jobs to several persons including traditional NDC and NPP members, who have promised to vote for the party.

Residents have also complained about the failure of both the current NDC administration and the previous NPP government to better their lives.

Some constituents also appear to be buying into the PPP’s campaign message to the effect that the NDC’s Candidate, Samuel Atta Mills, brother to the late President Mills, is an alien in the constituency, since he originally hails from Otuam in the Ekumfi constituency.

If these developments are anything to go by, then the PPP, whose candidate is reportedly galvanizing a huge youthful support following the promise of jobs, could pull a big surprise on December 7.

The Progressive People’s Party’s (PPP) Parliamentary Candidate for the Komenda Edina Eguafo Abrem (KEEA) Constituency in the Central Region, John Sterlin, has urged his constituents to vote for the PPP Flagbearer, Dr. Papa Kwesi Nduom in the 2016 elections.

He was speaking at rally held at the town’s lorry station which was attended by Dr. Nduom, the PPP National Chairman Nii Allotey Brew-Hammond, Central Region Chairman Sefa Andrews, and the Atwima Kwawonma constituency parliamentary candidate and Kumawood star, Abraham Kofi Davis, AKA Salinko.

Addressing the people, Mr. Sterlin, pleaded with them to vote massively for Dr. Nduom, in order for them to address the many challenges affecting them.

He added that, when elected, he will ensure that solutions are found to make the Komenda Sugar Factory operational to give jobs to the youth and also improve the lives of farmers.  He disclosed to the people that, a hospital will be sited soon near the Nduom University to attend to their health needs.

“Vote for me to go to parliament and advocate for you. It has been two years since KEEA became a municipality; yet we cannot boast of a hospital let alone a polyclinic. I will ensure all the four major towns get at least a polyclinic,” he said.

Nduom

For his part, Dr. Nduom expressed his gratitude to the people for their support and prayers during the legal battle with the Electoral Commission (EC), and urged them to vote for jobs and for themselves in the upcoming December polls by voting for the PPP.

He added that, t”he Central Region is very poor now – number four in Ghana, but sometime ago; the region used to lead in everything.”

Dr. Nduom promised to restore the region’s dignity when elected president.

komenda_800x533

“There is new hope for farmers and fishermen. What happened in America, not expected by many, is a sign of my victory right here in Ghana. I have sent jobs to every district in Ghana; but Nana Addo and Mahama have nothing to show for in those areas. This makes me a doer unlike they who are promisers! I can turn Ghana around in just four years.”

The business mogul told the crowd that, the party is national in character and violence-free.

He urged the supporters to continue to campaign peacefully for Ghanaians to see the difference between the PPP and the other political parties.

The 2016 parliamentary candidates for the Komenda-Edina-Eguafo-Abriem Constituency (KEEA), on Wednesday debated each other on issues affecting their constituency at Eguafo Breman in the Central Region, ahead of the December 7th polls.

Four parliamentary candidates in the constituency  who were present for the debate included Samuel Atta Mills of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), the incumbent MP and the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Dr. Stephen Nana Ato Arthur, the Convention People’s Party’s (CPP) Rose Austin Tsenadu, and John Sterling of the Progressive People’s Party (PPP).

keea-parliamentary-debate-12_900x675

The debate, which was organized by the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), and the Coalition of Domestic Election Observers (CODEO), was aimed at educating the electorates on the vision of the candidates.

keea-parliamentary-debate-11_900x675

This, they said, would allow the constituents to make an informed decision in the upcoming elections.

keea-parliamentary-debate-6_900x675

The debate, which covered issues such as people with disabilities, agriculture, HIV/AIDS, unemployment, teenage pregnancy and education among others, was attended by chiefs, the aged, students and some identifiable groups.

The Chief of Eguafo-Breman, Nana GyanDadzie I, who chaired the occasion, entreated the politicians to say no to tribal politics which he warned can lead to violence.

keea-parliamentary-debate-5_900x675

The Debate
On education, the PPP’s parliamentary candidate, John Sterling, argued that, education needs to be free at a certain stage.

“Education from Kindergarten to SHS should be free. We have to make sure that, there is a teacher in each classroom. We have to make sure that the tools the children need are there. We in PPP will make sure that every school has a canteen so that every child will get hot food to eat. We will make sure each School has a Library, so that if the child gets homework, he can access it to learn.”

He further added that, under a PPP government, each school will have its playing ground.

keea-parliamentary-debate-4_900x675

On unemployment, NPP’s Parliamentary Candidate and incumbent MP, Dr. Stephen Nana Ato Arthur, accused the ruling NDC government of causing a high rate of unemployment in Ghana.

“There is no job in Ghana. The economy is weak. When a hairdresser wants to work, there is no light. When you complete school, you do not get work to do. Why will the unemployment rate in Ghana not be high? In the NCCE Report, Education, Health and Employment are the main things Ghanaians say they want. If NPP comes to power, the perennial power outage will be a thing of the past.”

Dr. Arthur further added that, the NPP will create jobs through the one District one Factory policy.

On people with disabilities (PWDs), NDC’s Parliamentary Candidate, Samuel Atta Mills, said that, he is the best Candidate who understands this problem because he has a child in a similar situation, and therefore knows what PWDs need.

keea-parliamentary-debate-3_900x675

“I have a thirty one year old child who is disabled, I understand it very well. When a person with disability goes out, people laugh at them which hurt. I know this because I have a child like who has gone through it and so I will not sit down for people to go through it. We in Ghana call these People with Disabilities, but I want to call them Special Needs People. I will fight that they get group homes. A house built purposely for them to live in as groups.”

On HIV/AIDS, CPP’s Parliamentary Candidate, Rose Tsenadu, argued that, HIV/AIDS should be spoken about often because it will compel people to check their status.

This, she further argued, will prevent cases of unintentional spread of the virus.

keea-parliamentary-debate-7_900x675

“We would organize periodic screenings so that you can tell the Doctor or Nurse anything that is worrying you. If we don’t educate ourselves about HIV/AIDS, people may not know they have it, and so may hide it. They may not go to the Hospital to know their status. This is how Mother to Child transmission happens.”

Peace
To ensure peace before, during and after the elections, the Parliamentary Candidates united for peace.

In one voice, they said “Ghana belongs to us all and that, we should accommodate each other, irrespective of the political party one supports.”

keea-parliamentary-debate-13_900x675

Population size
The population of Komenda Edina Eguafo Abirem Municipal, according to the 2010 Population and Housing Census, is 144,705 representing 6.6 percent of the region’s total population. Males constitute 48.2 percent and females represent 51.8 percent. Sixty four percent of the population is rural.

keea-parliamentary-debate-10_900x675

Parliamentary history
The KEEA has traditionally been an NDC seat since 1992, until 2004, when Nduom won it for the CPP because the NPP didn’t field a candidate through some form of alliance.

Nduom did not contest in 2008 because he led the party as their Flagbearer. The seat thus fell to the NFC’s Dr. J.S. Annan in 2008.

Dr. Annan also lost in 2012 to the NPP’s Dr. Nana Ato Arthur, due to some internal wrangling in the NDC, following the return of Dr. Ato Quarshie, who went independent after losing the party’s primary, splitting the NDC’s vote.

keea-parliamentary-debate-1_900x675

The four leading parliamentary candidates in the 2016 race, are very optimistic of winning the KEEA seat in the upcoming polls.

The Omanhen (Paramount Chief) of the Komenda Traditional Area, Nana Kojo Kru II, has commended the Flagbearer of the Progressive People’s Party (PPP), Dr. Papa Kwesi Nduom, for all the massive developments that he has brought to the Komenda Edina Eguafo Abirem (KEEA) municipality.

According to Nana Kojo Kru II, there is no illustrious person in KEEA that can be compared to Dr. Nduom, and as such, he is grateful to God for giving him and the people of Komenda the flagbearer of the Progressive People’s Party (PPP).

The Omanhen made these remarks in an address to his people during the 2016 Nyeyi festival held at Komenda on Saturday, 10 September 2016.

He told the gathering that he and his people extended an invitation to Dr. Nduom to be the special guest of honour because he [Dr. Nduom] is a native of the area, and secondly, for the massive projects and developments he has embarked on in the Komenda Edina Eguafo Abirem (KEEA) municipality and not as a presidential candidate.

Omanhene (Paramount Chief) of the Komenda Traditional Area, Nana Kojo Kru II.
Omanhene (Paramount Chief) of the Komenda Traditional Area, Nana Kojo Kru II.

Nana Kojo Kru II touted Nduom’s businesses which range from media to hospitality, industries and financial services, and hoped for more persons of his calibre to emerge from the municipality.

He warned journalists not misconstrue his praise as campaigning for him, stressing that he invited him with the hope that the people will benefit from his wisdom and entrepreneurial experience.

He lauded his achievements and urged him to continue with all the good works he is doing in the KEEA municipality.

Groupe Nduom, a company that Dr. Nduom is the President and Chairman of, has an industrial estate situated in the heart of KEEA with companies there that include GN Printing, GN Electronics, FreshPak, GN Logistics and GN Quarry.

Apart from that, there is also the Nduom School of Business and Technology, a university that is strategically going to focus on business and technology.

There is the Nduom Sports Stadium, the first division Elmina Sharks football club and the women’s premier team, Sea Lions.

In the hospitality and tourism industry, there is the Coconut Grove Hotel (Beach Resort), Coconut Grove Bridge House and finally the Coconut Grove Village.

In the media, there is also Ahomka FM and Ocean 1 television. GN Bank has four offices in the KEEA municipality.

Delivering his remarks as the special guest of honour, Dr. Nduom thanked the chief for the kind words and asked the townsfolk not to see his remarks as that of a politician.

He said he is the president of the people of KEEA and that presidents of Ghana will come and go but he [Dr. Nduom] will remain with the people.

Dr. Nduom added that he and the Groupe Nduom (GN) are committed to making KEEA a vibrant industrial centre; but decried the redundant nature of a library whose construction he promoted for the area; and pleaded with the chief to allow him to put an employee there to ensure its regular opening.

In addition, he promised to provide them with solar lights to facilitate the learning process there so the children can make use of the centre.

He asked the Omanhen to provide land on which he will build a cold store for the people of Komenda, stones for a sea defence project, roofing sheets, pavement blocks and cement for the renovation of the traditional council’s office.

On the Komenda Sugar factory, Dr. Nduom said he remains committed to the factory and would do everything within his means to ensure the factory works. Against this background, he disclosed that he has acquired land for growing sugar cane to feed the sugar factory.

He said President Mahama and Nana Addo are communicators and lawyers respectively, as such have no experience at creating jobs unlike him and urged the people to vote for him.

Komenda was founded by Nana Komen Payin, who according to history, fought and killed a gorilla that threatened and killed women who went to fetch water at a stream in the land.

The death of the beast brought the people of Komenda together as a community. Today, a monument has been erected in the town in honour of the town’s founder.
