Management and staff of Heritage Bank Limited, embarked on a health walk over the weekend. The walk was held within the Airport environs to sensitize and encourage staff and the general public on the need to adopt healthy lifestyles.

The Managing Director, Patrick Fiscian, used this opportunity to congratulate the team for the dedication and enthusiasm with which they have carried out their various roles since the bank commenced operations earlier this year, and the many incremental strides achieved.

He mentioned that, the overwhelming number of staff who showed up on time is an indication of seriousness and dedication, which is a key ingredient in the culture of any organisation which seeks to attain world-class status.

He further encouraged staff to adopt healthy lifestyle practices such as walking and other simple exercises, to keep energized in this fast-paced working environment.

The walk began at the forecourt of the NCA Tower, Airport city, where the Bank’s Head office is situated, and proceeded through Elwak, 37 Military Hospital, and other principal streets of the surrounding business enclave.

The exercise was replicated in Kumasi, where staff of the Bank also embarked on a health walk on the same day.

The Head of Retail Banking, Mark Achiampong, joined the Kumasi team which was accompanied by a brass-band through principal streets of the Adum business hub.

Middle-aged people are being urged to walk faster to help stay healthy, amid concern high levels of inactivity may be harming their health.

Officials at Public Health England said the amount of activity people did started to tail off from the age of 40.

They are urging those between the ages of 40 and 60 to start doing regular brisk walks.

They say just 10 minutes a day could have a major impact, reducing the risk of early death by 15%.

But PHE estimates four out of every 10 40- to 60-year-olds take a brisk 10-minute walk less frequently than once a month.

To help, the government agency is promoting a free app – Active 10 – which can monitor the amount of brisk walking an individual does and provide tips on how to incorporate more into the daily routine.

PHE deputy medical director Dr Jenny Harries said: “I know first hand that juggling priorities of everyday life often means exercise takes a back seat.

“But walking to the shops instead of driving, or going for a brisk 10-minute walk on your lunch break each day, can add many healthy years to your life.”

Maureen Ejimofor

Maureen Ejimofor, 44, started taking regular walks three years ago in a bid to improve her health.

At the time, she weighed 18 stone and wanted to make a change. Within seven months, she had lost nearly five stone.

She joined an local organised walking group in Kent and loved it so much she ended up becoming a walk leader in charge of taking groups of people out at the weekend.

She has been using the Active 10 app and encourages others to do the same, describing it as “really useful” in persuading users to get a “burst” of brisk walking into their day.

Another walking fan is Liam Quigley, who has just turned 60.

“My parents used to take us out walking all the time,” he says.

“But unfortunately as I got older, I got a taste for the finer things in life, so I used to drink quite a bit, eat some of the wrong stuff. I actually put a lot of weight on.

“I like walking, and I decided to do something about it.”

Mr Quigley joined Stockport Walkers and now takes 10-mile hikes.

“Since I joined, I’ve lost two stone. It’s had a good effect on me,” he says.

GPs are also being encouraged to get their patients walking faster – defined as a walk of at least 3mph that leaves you breathing faster and increases your heart rate.

Dr Zoe Williams, of the Royal College of GPs, said: “Every GP should talk to their patients about the benefits of brisk walking and recommend the Active 10 app.”

PHE is focusing on those in middle age, because of the drop in activity levels.

It is recommended that people do 150 minutes of activity a week, but nearly half of those aged 40 to 60 fail to achieve that and one in five does less than 30 minutes.

While a daily 10-minute brisk walk will not get them to the recommended level, it will be enough to start making a difference to high blood pressure, diabetes, weight issues, depression and anxiety and musculoskeletal problems such as lower back pain.

PHE also hopes by getting this age group active it will have a knock-on effect among those who have children.

Members of the governing National Democratic Congress and the New Patriotic Party on Sunday clashed at the residence of the NPP flagbearer, Nana Akufo-Addo at Nima in Accra.

Though the cause is yet to be confirmed, information gathered by Citi News indicate that the clashes happened during a regional health walk organised by the NDC.

The Police had a hard time controlling the charged crowd, some of whom reportedly hauled stones into the residence of the opposition leader.

Though calm has been restored at the place, the NPP supporters have refused to give the Police access to Akufo-Addo’s residence to inspect the extent of damage the clashes caused.

Speaking to Citi News, the NPP MP for Ayawaso Central, Henry Quartey said the whole place was besieged by NDC supporters.

“You should have been here it was like a stadium, they were all the way round from Alisa hotel up to this place, I have never seen this before. And I want to call on the national chairman of the NDC and the national security coordinator to call his people to order because after all we have only one Ghana.”

He further called on the Chairman of the NDC, Kofi Portuphy to call his people to order.

“We are calling on the national security agencies because we have been here for over two hours and we have seen the Police on their radio calling for reinforcement and I can tell you none of them have shown up,” he added.

The representative of German player, Mesut Ozil, has come out to deny claims that the player has donated his world cup winnings to Gaza, but revealed that the player did donate money to projects in Brazil.

The player, practising Muslim originally from Turkey, was said to have donated his winnings from Germany’s World Cup win – reported to be around £240,000, to the region.

His representative has come out to debunk those claims, reportedly telling AP that the player did not donate any amount to Gaza but has, however,  donated some money to projects in Brazil.

The player confirmed this on his facebook page saying that he had alreaady donated to the surgeries of 11 sick children in Brazil but will up that number to 23 after the World Cup win.

It is a generous act by Arsenal’s record signing who has often been accused of not caring at times.

Germany and Arsenal superstar Mesut Ozil is to donate his £350,000 [$600,000] World Cup winnings to the children of Gaza following his country’s triumph in the global spectacle.

As the conflict in the Middle East rages following a failed ceasefire, Ozil is set to give the £237,000 bonus he received for helping Germany win the final, and the £118,000 he received for Germany’s semi-final win, to the occupied territory. He is however yet to confirm the actual beneficiaries of his largesse.

Ozil is of Turkish descent and a practising Muslim who recites the Quran before games. He controversially opted not to fast during the tournament, which fell in the holy month of Ramadan in which Muslims fast from dawn until sunset.

According to the Middle East Monitor, Ozil caused controversy when he declined to shake a Fifa official’s hand because of his support for Israel.

Arsenal’s club-record signing (£42.5 million) has quickly settled to life in England, winning the FA Cup with the Gunners before playing an integral role in Germany’s march to victory in Brazil.

A nine-day outbreak of conflict between Israel and militant group Hamas has seen over 1,000 rockets fired into Israel and over 1,300 airstrikes on the Gaza Strip.

Palestinian officials have said that 207 Palestinians have been killed in Israel’s Operation Protective Edge while one Israeli has died in southern Israel after being hit by a mortar.

The Gaza Strip is a narrow territory occupied by Israel currently under a land, sea and air blockade. According to the United Nations and aid agencies, humanitarian conditions have continued to deteriorate rapidly because of the blockade.

In addition to Ozil’s act of generosity, other Muslim representatives at the World Cup have also sent their prize money to the occupied coastal enclave.

After reaching the second round of the tournament, Algeria donated their £5.25m prize money to the people of Gaza.

Algeria striker Islam Slimani announced that the entire squad would donate the money to the territory because “they need it more than us”, according to a report in the Daily Mail.
