The leadership of pro-NPP vigilante group, Delta Force, has confirmed that the fines of their 13 members, who were convicted for storming the Ashanti Regional Security Coordinator, have been paid.

The accused persons pleaded guilty to two counts of conspiracy to commit crimes and rioting, at the Asokwa District Court in Kumasi, and were fined GHc1, 800 each.

[contextly_sidebar id=”2ibi55zFVbQazb5tSm1mhaLMmf6hYMYA”]They have also signed a bond to be of good behaviour for 12 months, after their Lawyer, Federick Kankam Boadu, had pleaded for a non-custodial sentence for them.

The 13 were arrested after they stormed the office of the newly appointed Ashanti Regional Security Coordinator, George Adjei, in March 201y7, and assaulted him in the process, in protest against his appointment.

They were initially facing charges of conspiracy to assault a public officer, and causing unlawful damage.

Those charges were reviewed to only rioting by the Kumasi Circuit Court on October 10, 2017.

The Ashanti Regional Director of the Delta Force, Mohammed Seidu, confirmed to Citi News that the 13 had been freed after their fines were paid on Thursday.

“If you don’t pay, the court won’t release you. According to the judge’s ruling, It’s 1, 800 per each person. We either pay or spend 12 months in prison. In this case, we had to find the money and pay, that is why they have been released. We’ve settled the bill,” he said.

Mohammed Seidu expressed regret about the actions of the 13 members of the group, but added that they got the support of the top hierarchy of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

“It’s normal once we are human beings, we are all governed by laws and no one is above them. Nobody would be happy about repeatedly going to court. I’m very happy today. What happened wasn’t good, but once it has happened, I can’t reject the boys just because nobody asked them to do what they did,” he added.

“I thank everybody especially the President of Ghana, the regional chairman [of the NPP], Wontumi and some of our big men in Accra, who supported us from Day one. Day in day out, they’ve been calling us and asking for updates on the case. They say they are solidly behind us.”

The Human Rights Division of the High Court has ordered the Inspector General of Police (IGP), to reinstate a former senior Police Officer, DSP Gifty Tehoda following her wrongful dismissal from the Police Service five years ago.

The Court further ordered that Gifty Tehoda be given all salaries and promotions owed her since her wrongful dismissal in August 2012.

She was also given a compensation of Ghc23,000.

According to the Judgment delivered by Justice Gifty Adjei Addo, DSP Tehoda was unlawfully detained by the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI) in 2012, when she was picked up following the cocaine-turned-baking soda saga at the Police Headquarters.

The judge also held that the police breached the rule of natural justice for a fair hearing, as DSP Tehoda was not given an opportunity to be heard during the service enquiry by the police leading to her dismissal.

The case involving DSP Tehoda began on September 27, 2011, when one Nana Ama Martins was arrested for possessing large parcels suspected to be cocaine, which later turned into bicarbonate or baking soda.

DSP Tehoda was linked to the disappearance of the cocaine and was interdicted and subsequently dismissed from the Police Service.

She was then the Deputy Commander in-charge of the Commercial Crimes Unit.

But three years after her acquittal, the Police Service did not reinstate her, forcing her to go to the Human Rights High Court to challenge the wrongful dismissal by the Ghana Police Service.

As part of the mediation process, the committee set up by the Northern Regional Security Council (REGSEC) is expected to today June, 3, 2014 hold a meeting with the feuding factions at Yiyamba and Biriyamba farming settlements in the Gushiegu district.

The seven member committee chaired by Deputy Northern Regional Minister, A.B.A Fuseini will meet with representatives of the two factions at the Gushiegu District Assembly.

Citi News gathered that the two Konkomba clans at Yiyamba and Biriyamba recently clashed over a pending chieftaincy dispute contrary to earlier media reports that they fought over a parcel of farmland.

The said lingering chieftaincy dispute erupted between the two clans prior to the 2012 general elections.

Combatants from both sides of the chieftaincy divide have been re-strategizing to launch an attack in case of the slightest provocation, hence the recent hostilities.

This signifies that the seven member committee will have to tackle the conflict as such.

Three persons were reported dead whilst several households were torched during the recent clash.

Preliminary reports indicated that the combatants engaged in a fearless gun battle over a parcel of farmland.
