Famed for handling delicate healthcare procedures, specifically spinal and neurological surgeries, the Foundation of Orthopaedics and Complex Spine (FOCOS) Hospital, has added on to its state of the art orthopaedic care and education centre, a 16-bed children’s block.

This forms part of plans to provide quality and affordable medical care to its patients.

Established as a non-for-profit organisation to provide comprehensive orthopaedic care to the under-served populations across the African continent, founder of FOCOS hospital Prof. Boachie-Adjei, said progress by the health facility forms part of plans to improve on the health conditions of patients at the centre.

“Another very important milestone and that is the commissioning of the Wayne and Claire Heyland Children’s Pavilion. It is very inspiring and encouraging seeing the progress we are making everyday with the FOCOS Hospital project,” he said.

“We first had a single room for a clinic at the Trust hospital in 1998, then a 4-room house at the Watson clinic in 2004, and subsequently the FOCOS hospital complex with 50 beds in 2012. Now we can boast of a dedicated 16-bed children’s block with an adjoining activity center, which allows our hospitalized patients the opportunity to receive classroom instructions and also engage in recreational and social activities,” he narrated.

In a speech read on behalf of the Deputy Health Minister, Tina Mensah, government said it has always supported private initiatives in specialty care.

“such initiatives…[are] potentially complimentary to the effort of government in providing comprehensive medical care to the populace.”

Brief background of the Centre

Established in 1998 by renowned orthopaedic surgeon Professor Oheneba Boachie-Adjei, the hospital seeks to enhance access to optimal surgical and non-surgical care for patients with disabling musculoskeletal disorders including complex spine deformities and pediatric orthopaedic problems in under-served regions within and outside Ghana.

The facility is also affiliated with the Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) based in New York, a position reached in 2014.

Ghanaian born Prof. Boachie-Adjei has special expertise in the treatment of scoliosis, kyphosis and spine reconstruction in both adult and pediatric patients.

He was recognized for his contribution towards orthopaedic healthcare delivery in the world at the “Dream Makers” gala held in August 2017.

Head of Anaethesia at FOCOS Orthopaedic Hospital, Dr. Irene Adorkor Wulff, on Thursday mentored Senior High School students at the ongoing National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ) competition, at the University of Ghana, Legon.

The morning mentorship talk, which is an empowerment session put in place by organizers of the competition, saw the seasoned Consultant Anaesthetist  take her turn to inspire young participants of the NSMQ  as well as their supporters, to help build their capacities and go after their dreams.

Speaking at the event Dr.Wulff recounted her educational escapades from CRIG Primary School, Akim New Tafo, to her time as a Fellow at the West Africa College of Surgeons.

“My father was the doctor at the New Tafo Government Hospital for 30 years. As a child I was totally fascinated by his medical books and spent hours looking through them, not understanding anything and leaving my childish scribbles on many pages. By the time I was 6years old, I knew I was going to be a doctor and spent my subsequent years working hard to achieve that,” she said.

Dr. Wulff advised the students to set goals for themselves and admonished them to do away with distractions that derailed their efforts to achieve their set goals.

“Going into the medical field has never been easy, but you need to push yourself hard, take what you are taught and run with it,” she said.

“In Achimota School, we were taught to subjugate ourselves so we may rule. You have to learn at the feet of others and be a good servant in order to be a good master one day. There is reward in diligence and hard work and no one can take your achievement from you when you get there,” Dr. Wulff added.

She believed that it is tougher these days for students to study than before because of the proliferation of distractions like mobile phones and social media to which they are always glued to.

She further went on to tell the students about the evolution of Anaesthesia from the days of Adam, through the Stone Age days to modern day Anaesthesia as well as some challenges in the field.

Dr.Wulff reiterated the attitude required to be successful in the field.

“I don’t believe in making excuses in life, so don’t make excuses for yourself and you will make it,” she said.

Dr. Irene Adorkor Wulff is a product of Achimota School.

She has close to two decades of experience in the medical field and was in charge of Neurosurgical Anaesthesia and the Sugical Intensive Care unit for some years before she left the Korle-bu Teaching Hospital.

FOCOS Orthopaedic Hospital is a 70-bed Specialist Orthopaedic Hospital located in the Pantang area of Accra, Ghana and is noted for the treatment of complex spine and joint diseases like Scoliosis, Kyphosis as well as other degenerative and deformative Orthopaedic conditions.

The NSMQ 2017, is the 22nd edition since its inception in 1993.

Participating schools in the contest are required to go through five rounds of academic drills in Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Mathematics.

The school with most points out of three schools qualifies to the next stage of the competition.

Healing Words Foundation, a US-based NGO, recently donated a variety of literary items to pediatric patients at the FOCOS Orthopaedic Hospital, to help improve upon their reading skills.

Approximately 150 books, ranging from non-fiction to reference books written in English and Amharic, were presented to the children, many coming from various countries including Ghana, Nigeria, and Ethiopia.

The books were to help supplement the efforts of FOCOS Hospital in educating these children while they undergo treatment for various orthopedic conditions and disorders, sometimes staying at the facility for 3- 6 months.

The books were also a welcomed addition to the new children’s activity center currently being built at the hospital.

Speaking to the media about the donation was the Founder of Healing Words Foundation, Dr. Akua Ampadu who said “FOCOS was chosen as the inaugural benefactor of this project, due to its commitment to helping alleviate spinal deformities and disorders in children around the world.”

She further stressed on the benefits of the foundation’s donation to the children at FOCOS.

“Many of these children have extended stays at FOCOS Hospital before and after their surgeries and thus we felt providing reading material would have a positive impact on the overall healing process,” Dr. Ampadu added.

Receiving the items was the Chief Administrative Officer at FOCOS Hospital, Mrs. Leticia Osei-Poku who commended Healing Words Foundation for their generosity.

She assured the foundation that the books would be put to good use for the greater good of the children.

Healing Words Foundation is an NGO that recognizes the importance of reading to a child’s holistic health, and uses bibliotherapy to ignite and perpetuate a love for books among patients and their families.

The Healing Words Foundation will replicate donations like the one done at FOCOS Hospital to hospitals across the globe, engaging young children in inpatient and outpatient facilities in the act of reading.
