Documents and other valuables of a Circuit Court Judge within the Ho High Courts Premises were burnt after a fire outbreak inside the Judge’s chamber.

Priscilla Dikro, who occupies the chamber said she was shocked at the Monday morning incident.

Eyewitnesses who declined to speak on record said the fire started at midnight, but was quickly doused by the Ghana National Fire Service.

It is unclear what may have triggered the fire, but personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service and the Police Service have begun investigations into the cause.

Heaps of documents on several court cases, petitions and judicial administration items including office furniture were burnt.

The Volta Regional Fire Officer, DCFO Mawusi Sarpong, told Citi News her outfit was swift in responding to the incident, after they received a distress call from the court.

Following the incident, scheduled court cases have been adjourned until further notice.

This incident brings to the fore the importance of running a paperless court system where cases are not only documented electronically, but are saved in clouds for easy recovery.

A fire has killed 24 people at a drug rehabilitation centre in Azerbaijan’s capital Baku, officials say.

Television pictures showed flames leaping through barred windows of a single-storey wooden building.

The fire in a ward for bedridden patients was initially caused by an electrical fault in the building, a government statement said.

Thirty-one people were rescued during the incident, the General Prosecutor’s office said.

Four people were taken to hospital, according to Azerbaijan’s news agency APA.

The blaze, which broke out just before dawn, was fanned by strong winds. It took around three hours for fire fighters to extinguish it.

Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev visited the site of the fire, the Republican Narcological Centre, after it was extinguished, local media said.

The former Soviet nation has a chronic shortage of rehabilitation places for its 30,000 registered drug addicts.

Nearly 3,000 people applied for places at the centre in 2015 alone, and a new clinic with 250 places has recently been built.

Following the Wednesday evening fire that ravaged parts of the Dome Central Market in Accra, the Municipal Chief Executive for Ga East, Janet Mensah, has said she suspects foul play from some traders who were unhappy with a decision to prevent them from selling on pavements.

The fire is the fourth at the Dome Central Market, and the second in less than two months.

[contextly_sidebar id=”vBskiDUIpZbzxpm62PIbKccNWqQfiE4v”]”This is the fourth time the market is in this situation and it is intentional. Information we have gathered is that, someone deliberately started the fire,” the MCE told Citi News.

She added that “we are collaborating, and I have made a formal complaint to the police. We are on course. We will get to the bottom of this.”

A day after the fire, traders were counting their losses running into thousands of thousands of cedis.

“My goods are worth over GHc 20,000 cedis. I buy things from Togo. I have lost about GHc 1,200. We took loans to establish our businesses,” some traders lamented to Citi News.

The fire, which started around 7: 40 pm, gutted 15 metal container shops, and destroyed other properties, though no casualties were recorded, according to the Fire Service.

Fire Service personnel arrived at the scene to douse a large chunk of the inferno, and it eventually took two fire tenders to bring the situation under control.

The Greater Accra Regional Commander of the Fire Service, DCFO Ebenezer Simpson, told Citi News his outfit would need time to establish the cause of the fire.

“Unless we finish extinguishing the fire thoroughly, we don’t want to rush in arriving at the cause of the fire. We need to do some overhauling, check out what goes on, the activities carried out at the places that have been severely charred, and we have to interrogate those who use that container and other things for us to arrive at what caused the fire.”

An Intercity State Transport Company (STC) Bus was gutted by fire early this [Saturday] morning on the Peki-Kpeve stretch of the Eastern Corridor Road while conveying passengers to Nkwanta.

According to eyewitnesses, the bus from Accra reached a spot between Peki and Kpeve when the driver’s dashboard suddenly burst into flames.

The fire spread through the vehicle resulting in a stampede as passengers forced their way out to safety.

The passengers, who mostly had their luggage loaded in vehicle’s boot, made frantic efforts to douse the fire but were unsuccessful.

They all watched in despair as the bus with Registration number GC 5099 was completely razed by the inferno.

“Passengers on board did everything possible to quench the fire by throwing sand onto the bus but could not stop it” an eyewitness recounted.

None of the occupants of the bus suffered any injuries but Citi News understands that all luggage and other items on the bus were lost in the fire.

It is unclear what might have caused the fire but a source at the State Transport Company, who confirmed the incident to Citi News, said their outfit would soon officially inform the public on the details.

The fire reportedly started at 5:00 am, and swept through three shops and three warehouses filled with cosmetic and rubber products.

Several secondhand clothes meant for sale were also destroyed.

The affected traders who are counting their losses, say they also lost money to the fire.

It is unclear what caused the fire, but eyewitnesses told Citi News they suspect it emanated from a nearby refuse dump site where the refuse were being burnt.

At least 12 people have been killed and four others critically injured in a fire at an apartment building in the Bronx borough of New York.

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio said the fire was the deadliest in the city for at least 25 years. The victims include a one-year-old child, he added.

The cause of the fire, on Prospect Avenue, near Fordham University and the Bronx Zoo, is not yet clear.

More than 160 firefighters helped bring the blaze under control.

Officials said the first alarm sounded at the five-storey building at about 19:00 local time (00:00 GMT).

Speaking at the scene, Mr De Blasio said a nearby school had been set up to shelter those evacuated from the building.

The city is currently experiencing bitterly cold weather.

“We’re here at the scene of an unspeakable tragedy,” Mr De Blasio said.

“Tonight, here in the Bronx there are families that have been torn apart. This is the worst fire tragedy we have seen in this city in at least a quarter century. Based on the information we have now, this will rank as one as the worst losses of life to a fire in many, many years.”

He said the fire service had managed to rescue at least 12 people from the building.

Fire Commissioner Daniel Nigro, standing alongside the mayor, described the fire as a “tragedy… without question historic in its magnitude”.

“People died on various floors of the apartment [block], ranging in age from one to over 50,” he told reporters.

“In a department that is surely no stranger to tragedy, we’re shocked by the lives lost.”

Witness Rafael Gonzalez, who lives in a building across the street, told WCBS-TV he was woken by the smell of smoke and then saw some people using a fire escape of the burning building as the fire raged.

The building contains more than 20 flats and was built just over 100 years ago, the New York Times reported.

The Associated Press said the fire was the deadliest in New York – excluding the 9/11 attacks – since 87 people died at a social club in the Bronx in 1990.

Earlier this month, a mother and her three children died in a fire at their home in Brooklyn, New York.
