Alvaro Morata missed a penalty on his Chelsea debut as Arsenal won an uncharacteristically feisty Community Shield in a shootout at Wembley.

Record signing Morata – a late substitute – dragged a poor effort wide moments after goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois had blazed over in a first use of a new penalty shootout system.

Premier League champions Chelsea had gone ahead through Victor Moses, before Pedro was sent off for an ugly lunge on Mohamed Elneny.

From the resulting free-kick, debutant Sead Kolasinac headed the Gunners level to take the match to penalties.

The shootout – the first in English football to follow the ABBA format – saw Chelsea miss back-to-back penalties to allow Olivier Giroud to win the match from the spot.

Level at 90 minutes, the match went straight to penalties, which were taken in the ABBA format.

Designed to prevent a perceived advantage to the team going first, the system sees team A take the first kick followed by team B – before team B go again. Team A then get two successive penalties, a little like the tie-break in tennis, and so on until there is a winner.

Confused? You are not alone as not even the players seemed to understand.

After Gary Cahill’s opener for Chelsea was cancelled out by Theo Walcott, Arsenal defender Nacho Monreal stepped forward, correctly, to take his kick. However he was waved back by several of his Gunners team-mates, who seemed confused by the new format.

Monreal scored, before Courtois and Morata both missed horribly, to the delight of the Arsenal fans behind the goal.

That allowed first Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and then Giroud to score and start the Arsenal celebrations.

The Sun has reported that Cristiano Ronaldo has told his agent Jorge Mendes to seal a dream return to Manchester United.

Manchester United will reportedly offer Spain goalkeeper David de Gea, 26, and £183m in exchange for Portugal forward Ronaldo, 32, and his Real Madrid team-mate Alvaro Morata, the 24-year-old Spain striker.

According to Daily Mirror, United will offer De Gea and £175m for Ronaldo and will pursue Morata in a separate deal.

If De Gea goes to Madrid, then United could move for AC Milan’s Italy goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma, 18, as a replacement.

Meanwhile, Chelsea are to increase their efforts to sign Juventus’ Brazil left-back Alex Sandro, 26, and Monaco’s France midfielder Tiemoue Bakayoko, 22, according to the Guardian.

Italy midfielder Marco Verratti, 24, wants to leave Paris St-Germain for Barcelona.

Liverpool on the other hand remain in talks with Roma over winger Mohamed Salah, 25, but will not pay more than £35m for the Egypt international, which falls short of the Serie A club’s valuation.

Everton will take their summer spending past £60m this week by signing Malaga’s Spain striker Sandro Ramirez, 21.

Arsene Wenger will be considered “one of the best managers in history” even if Arsenal lose the FA Cup final, says Chelsea boss Antonio Conte.

Frenchman Wenger, 67, has been Gunners boss since 1996 and his current deal expires in the summer.

Wenger said his future will be decided at a board meeting after Saturday’s FA Cup final against the Blues.

“I know very well Arsene Wenger has done well in the FA Cup and won many trophies,” said Conte.

Wenger has faced numerous protests by Arsenal’s own supporters this season, calling for him to quit as boss.

But he could end the season with a seventh FA Cup triumph – as many times as Liverpool have won the famous trophy.

Conte believes Wenger will still be Arsenal’s manager next season.

Arsenal beat Chelsea 3-0 in September before the Blues defeated their London rivals 3-1 at Stamford Bridge in February

“I don’t think this will be the last game for Arsene, he deserves to be working for Arsenal,” added the Italian, who is seeking the Double in his first season at Stamford Bridge after steering the Blues to the Premier League title.

“He has done a fantastic job.

“Sometimes in England I think you undervalue the achievement of qualifying for the Champions League. Only this season they haven’t qualified for the Champions League.

“When you stay for a long time, for sure he is a good manager. We must consider him to be one of the best managers in history.”
