The Ashanti Regional Police Drug Law Enforcement Unit, in partnership with the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) have arrested nine traders for allegedly importing and selling prohibited drugs.

Margaret Mensah, 25, alias Akua and Samira Abdul-Kadir, 30, were arrested for importing the drugs while Abubakari Osman, 20, Abubakari Ibrahim, 24, Mohamadu Mansour, 18, Adamu Seidu, 22, Mahamadu Ibrahim Nurideen, 22 and Abdul-Salem Abubakari, 30, – all Nigerians – were grabbed for selling them.

The Head of the Public Affairs Unit of the Command, ASP Juliana Obeng, disclosed this to the media in Kumasi.

She revealed that Margaret and Samira were arrested on Wednesday, July 5, upon a tip-off at French-Line near Allah Bar in Kumasi and during an inspection, some of the prohibited drugs found were found.

They are Tramadol 225 milligrams, Iibulo plus, Devegra 150, Vargra Extra 150, Black Cobra 150 and other liquids in plastic bottles well-known as “Awonche” in Hausa, meaning “wash your heart” with others labelled in Chinese were also discovered.

When the seven were arrested, they mentioned the two women who also confessed that they had imported the drugs from Togo.

Madam Nora Narkie Terlabie, the Principal Regulatory Officer of the Ashanti Regional Office of FDA said Tramadol is a medication that should be taken unless prescribed.

Only the 50 milligrams and 100 milligrams were only authorised by FDA contrary to the 225 milligrams being sold on the market by the suspects.

It is prescribed for patients with severe pains but is being abused by some people for enhancing sexual performance.

She noted that though the drug was not a narcotic it had some characteristics similar to narcotic drugs with side effects including difficulty in breathing, dizziness, low heart rate, seizures, difficulty falling asleep, fainting, headache, constipation/diarrhoea, excessing sweating and dry mouth.

The Principal Regulatory Officer said users, especially the youth usually mix it with energy drinks or alcohol to boost their sexual performance.

Madam Terlabie said it had a high risk of addiction when taken for a long time.

She cautioned the public to desist from taking such drugs, especially Tramadol without prescription.

Madam Terlabie said the drugs should be bought at Licensed Chemical and Pharmacy Shops.

She said people should report to the FDA of any side effects of drugs purchased.

The team demonstrated how the liquid, also known as ‘wash your heart’, could affect the body as a plastic container it was poured into melted.

The Narcotics Control Board (NACOB) on Thursday destroyed narcotic substances estimated at two million dollars at Bundase Training Camp of the Ghana Armed Forces at Pampram in the Greater Accra Region.

This follows a court order for NACOB to burn the narcotics intercepted from drug peddlers for the past 13 years after those cases were dealt with.

[contextly_sidebar id=”mYKUeCH3MXDGtqgX6d0M7Jf8sIH8WOp9″]Mr Michael Addo, the Deputy Director of NACOB, said the illegal substances destroyed include heroin, cocaine, sativa, methamphetamine and cannabis seized at various points such as the Kotoka International Airport, the borders, Cargo Village and Ghana Post.

Mr Addo said the drugs were seized between 2003 and 2016 and that the destruction also formed part of the commemoration of the World Drugs Day which falls on June 26.

He said the destruction was also to send signals to the public that the drugs were harmful to the human body.

The exercise was done in the presence of officials from the court, the Ghana Standard Authority (GSA), and Environmental Protection Council.

Personnel from the GSA tested the drugs to confirm if they were the actual drugs intercepted, after which they were set ablaze.

Customs officials in Kuwait have apprehended a pigeon carrying drugs in a miniature backpack, Kuwaiti newspaper al-Rai reports.

A total of 178 pills were found in the fabric pocket attached to its back, the newspaper says.

The bird was caught near the customs building in Abdali, close to the border with Iraq.

An al-Rai journalist said the drugs were a form of ketamine, an anaesthetic also used as an illegal party drug.

Abdullah Fahmi told the BBC that customs officials already knew pigeons were being used to smuggle drugs, but this was the first time they had caught a bird in the act.

Pigeon found carrying drugs in Kuwait

Law enforcement officials elsewhere have, however, identified previous cases where pigeons have been used to carry lightweight high-value narcotics.

In 2015, prison guards in Costa Rica caught a pigeon carrying cocaine and cannabis in a zipped pouch.

And in 2011, Colombian police discovered a pigeon that was unable to fly over a high prison wall because of the weight of a package of cocaine and marijuana strapped to it.

Pigeons have been used to carry messages since Roman times, using their powerful “homing” ability.

Racing pigeons can return to their lofts from distances of hundreds of kilometres.

Officials say they have discovered one of India’s largest-ever drug hauls concealed in a fizzy drinks factory.

More than 20m tablets of the banned drug Mandrax, with an estimated street value of $450m (£365m), were seized in the western city of Udaipur in October.

Subhas Dudhani, a Bollywood producer, was arrested in Mumbai in connection with the find, an official told reporters.

It is believed the drugs were bound for South Africa and Mozambique.

Najib Shah, head of the central board of excise and customs, revealed the arrest on Wednesday in New Delhi.

Hunting

“The total consignment was about 23.5 metric tons with an international value of 3,000 crore (rupees) [1 crore equals 10 million],” Mr Shah said.

The pills – discovered hidden in a secret room – are the largest synthetic drugs haul Indian officials have ever intercepted, according to Mr Shah.

But they are still trying to track down other people involved in the operation.

A customs officer told AFP on condition of anonymity: “We are on the lookout for several people involved in the drug syndicate.”

The recreational drug, commonly known as M-Pills, buttons or smarties, is popular on the rave scene in parts of Africa and Asia.

But overdosing on Methaqualone, the chemical name of Mandrax, can be fatal or leave the user in a coma.

Black Stars forward Abdul Majeed Warris has backed David Accam of Helsingborg to get a place in the team’s final squad for the World Cup in Brazil.

The former Valenciennes player, who played with Accam at the Right To Dream Academy in their formative years, says the Swedish-based player has been in good form this season helping his club in the league and especially in the Swedish Cup and with his regular appearances, meets the criteria given by Black Stars head coach Kwesi Appiah.

” He has had a great season in Sweden and if you look at the basis of current form for the coach’s selection, then Accam deserves a place in the final team. He has been playing and scoring and it is great that he has been called up but the final choice is for the coach.

However, I know David will come in and work really hard”, said Warris in an interview with GH One Television’s sports programme “The Game”.

Accam has scored  6 goals in 9 matches since November 2013 but Warris believes Accam can provide a very important spark to the Black Stars attack.

” He is very quick and he loves taking on players. That is how he has been since I knew him from our time at Right To Dream. He likes running a lot and ha can be a very good threat to defenders.”

Accam is part of the 26-man provisional squad list named by coach Kwesi Appiah for the World Cup ahead of the team’s training camp in Ghana and Holland in May.
